Invitation to View 2017
This year the scheme includes its first ‘hard hat’ property,
the Royal Gunpowder Mills, where areas are normally
out-of-bounds. Hats will be provided. Several other of
the 14 newcomers this year are also works in progress:
Rowena Colthurst and her husband have bought back
her former family home, Pitchford Hall, and are rescuing
it following 25 years of neglect; at Ashley Court, the
owners are restoring the Grade II country house and
Rugbourne Farm has been saved from collapse by its
architect owner. Others have connections with famous
people: Prince Duleep Singh lived at Hockwold Hall;
William Kent redesigned Raynham Hall for ‘Turnip’
Townshend; William Smith, who drew the first
stratological map of Britain, lived at Rugbourne Farm
and works by Isidor Kaufmann, the ‘Jewish Holbein’,
are on show at Hartsheath. As an incentive to dedicated
Invitation to View fans, Talliston House offers a prize of
a night’s stay and b&b (see page 53.)

The Abbey, Coggeshall
THE ABBEY
Founded in 1140 on land given
by Stephen and Matilda. Restored
abbot’s stew pond was a feature
when Edward II held court here
in 1325; in 1293 the vicar was
gaoled for poaching the abbot’s
carp. Tour includes abbot’s
house, chapel, cloister, guest
house and riverside courtyard.
Exceptional medieval brickwork.
Tour approx 2 hours, £17 including tea or coffee with home-made cakes
and biscuits. www.theabbeycoggeshall.co.uk
2
Coggeshall Abbey is arguably one of the most important
architectual and historical buildings in Essex, and is
virtually unchanged since the Tudor period. Abbot Ralph
(incumbent from 1207 to 1218) was injured at the fall of
Jerusalem before he became a monk. The Paycocke wool
family later bought the remains of the Abbey and
constructed a grand house in miniature. Exceptional
Renaissance screen in the Great Hall and fine panelling in
the Great Chamber. Numerous royal connections.
BAWDSEY MANOR
Architectural extravaganza, built
1880-1900 for Sir Cuthbert
Quilter and set in 150 acres of
historic parkland overlooking the
Deben Estuary. Guided tour of
the gardens and 400-metre
Pulhamite cliff walk with refreshments in the Green Room and
Great Hall of the Manor House.
A short talk on the history of
Bawdsey Manor is included.
Tour 2 hours, £15 including tea or coffee with cakes.

Grade II* manor house, with
medieval, Regency, Victorian and

history and ship models. ‘Hugely
enjoyable’ says Simon Jenkins.
Tour 2½ hours, £15 including tea and cake. www.abberleyhallfoundation.org.uk
Tour 2 hours, £14 including cream tea. www.burtoncourt.com

Sold by the Acton family to the
present owners in 1959 and now
a private family home.

English Heritage calls this one of
the finest examples of a Victorian
country house. The Grade II*
hall was built by Samuel Daukes
in 1845. Forty years on, the interiors were refashioned and much
remains today. A theatre has murals
of Worcestershire life. Visitors can
also climb the landmark, 1880s
Clock Tower – seven counties can
be seen from here on a clear day.
Visit www.invitationtoview.co.uk for more information

PLAS DINAM
Home to the 19th Earl and
Countess of Derby, Knowsley Hall
has been owned by the Stanley

However, today’s building dates, in
part, from about 1495 with a later
Georgian wing and some fine
Victorian and Edwardian interiors.
Much-loved family home to the
fifth generation of descendants
of Victorian railway and mining
entrepreneur David Davies.
