History of Box Kites
● Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite in 1892.
● Box kites quickly became popular because of the great
amount of lift their design provided, Hargrave even managed
to tie the largest box kites together to lift a human into the air.
● Samuel Cody patented this for the US military so they could
lift men into the sky to get an aerial view.
● However, this became outdated with the invention of the
airplane which took much of its design from the box kite.
● Currently the box kite serves mostly recreational use.
Different Kinds of Box Kites
● Box kites are usually flown using a single line but there
are cases where more have been used.
● Additionally, box kites come in many different variations.
This may be as simple as using a triangle design
instead or even sometimes adding more sides.
● Many enthusiasts enjoy building kites in a
cell formation by combining many
different boxes or shapes together.
