Winter Poems Colorful Snow If snow came down in colors, How splendid it would be. To make bright jolly snowmen, For everyone to see. Little Snowman I'm a little snowman round and fat. Here are my mittens, Here is my hat. Add a little scarf and a carrot nose. You stand so tall when the cold wind blows. New Year! January Now is here. A fine new start, For a whole new year. The snow comes down, In the dark of the night. When we awake, The world is white. In January, When there’s snow, We get out our sleds, And away we go. The Mitten The mitten in the snow, The mitten in the snow. Help us please so we don’t freeze, The mitten in the snow. A bear squeezes in, A bear squeezes in. Help us please so we don’t freeze, The mitten in the snow. Benefits of Poetry Notebooks: Poetry notebooks are a great way to promote literacy in kindergarten. The use of a poetry notebook covers many of the sunshine state standards as well as the common core standards. Poetry notebooks help students make connections to the text, connect background knowledge, create visual imagery, and recognize sight words and the use of punctuation marks. How I use poetry notebooks in my classroom: We read our poem of the week each day. First, we read through our poem. Then, we discuss what the poem is about and re-read it again. We will then read through our poem and highlight sight words that we know/have learned. We then go through the poem again and look for punctuation marks. We discuss the type of punctuation mark used and its purpose. We choose a main word in the poem to label in our drawing. We then illustrate our poem, using a lot of details in our drawing.
