The Benefits of Installing ZETTLER Technology into an Auditorium

The Benefits of Installing ZETTLER
Technology into an Auditorium
In a small auditorium the fire detection and alarm system could simply
comprise of a manual system. In larger premises, with greater
occupancy, the system should incorporate automatic detectors used
in critical areas and in escape routes. In the largest and more complex
auditoriums, full detection coverage is beneficial.
The reliability of the fire detection system is paramount, as its primary
function is to protect life. As the system is likely to incorporate
sounders, precautions must be taken against creating panic when the
auditorium is occupied by members of the public. In such cases, two
operating modes should be included; one for when the auditorium
is occupied or in use by the public and one for when it is not use and
likely to be empty.
The ZETTLER PROFILE range of control panels incorporates MZX
Technology, a complete system from a single manufacturer designed
to provide optimum performance at all times. Some of the systems key
features are highlighted below.
The Benefits of Installing ZETTLER Technology into an Auditorium
/ / Risk: During performances
/ / Risk: In a large space occupied by
there can be a presence of theatrical
smoke or fog, (fog is created by
pumping one of a variety of different
glycol or glycol/water mixtures, referred
to as fog fluid, into a heat exchanger).
The effects can vary. It can lie at a low level
or it may rise and dissipate at a higher level.
This phenomenon, however, can easily
create unwanted alarms. Smart fire detection
software from ZETTLER is capable of
differentiating between this type of event
and a real fire, allowing the sensors to
remain active during a performance. The
risk of fire undoubtedly increases during
the performance, given the amount of
electrical equipment operating at the time.
/ / Solution:
/ / Solution:
hundreds of people at any one time,
there is a high risk and when a problem
occurs, swift action is required. There is
not often time to wait for an alarm
engineer to be dispatched, as this can
incur further delay. During this time, if
the staff are evacuated or stood down
and the show stops, costs soon escalate.
Auditoriums usually have a resident
engineer who is available to provide first
line cover and perhaps fix the problem or
provide a temporary solution. Either way
the engineer would need to be
competent, have good knowledge of the
system and a level of access to
the system.
/ / Solution:
By installing the 850PC triple sensing
detector from ZETTLER both front and
backstage, the auditorium is protected to
the highest level, as heat, smoke and carbon
monoxide are monitored. Monitoring levels
of carbon monoxide is - an important factor
in an auditorium where much of the
materials will have a high carbon content.
The added benefit of the 850PC is that it
has a built-in resilience to stage smoke and
if there is no carbon monoxide present it
can identify that there is no real fire present.
The 850 series of sensors are available in 10
standard colours, to match most decors and
are available with and without an integral
short circuit isolator. They use sophisticated
digital signalling to ensure reliable
communications with the ZETTLER
PROFILE control panel.
ZETTLER PROFILE is a powerful fire
detection and alarm system using
MZX Technology. The system is highly
resilient to external factors, such as
electrical noise or sources of false alarm. / /
The Touchscreen Graphical Guided User
Interface (GUI) has context sensitive help
and has been ergonomically engineered so
that every operation is made easy, even to
non-fire experts. Touch sensitive LED’s
provide detailed status information and an
integral help file ensures a fast response to
all incoming events. The system combines
ease of use with high performance and
through innovation brings lifetime cost
benefits to end users. On-screen site floor
plans display devices in alarm or fault and
are site configurable, so are constantly up / /
to date. ZETTLER PROFILE control panels
are available as single, 2-4, 4-16 and 4-32
loop models (with appropriate expansion
modules). There is also a range of fully
functional repeater panels offering a number
of options, including a compact DC repeater,
an 80 zone AC version or 40 and 80 way
zonal displays.
/ / Risk: High level fire alarm sounders
can initiate panic in public areas such as
an auditorium. Alerting staff to a possible
outbreak of fire in the first instance is a
suitable alternative.
By specifying and installing MZX Technology,
sounders and beacons can be combined
within a single unit, in both the loop
powered Symphony range of wall mounted
units and the AV sounder beacon base.
Sounders and beacons are addressed,
which means, although installed on the
same cables, they can be programmed
when to operate and at what volume.
The volume is set in the software so some
sounders can be set at lower levels than
others, or even turned off, leaving only the
flashing beacon operating. This allows the
designer to be flexible when designing the
system, whilst the installer and user do not
incur extra costs for additional wiring. All
loop powered sounders incorporate integral
short circuit isolators, providing maximum
integrity.
Risk: What happens if by accident
the system is activated?
This is still referred to as an unwanted alarm.
The incident, whilst not really being a
malfunction, can still cause the same
amount of disruption. To avoid unnecessary
interruption to a performance or evacuation
of the audience, incidents will often be
investigated before evacuation takes place.
When taking this course of action speed is
of the essence, as delays will undoubtedly
increase the risk to all occupants.
Solution:
Any investigation needs to be carried out
quickly and under strict controls ensuring
that time limits are in place. MZX Technology
provides essential components to ensure a
quick and accurate investigation of an alarm
from a detector. Every ZETTLER PROFILE
control panel has an investigate delay
programme ensuring that a procedure is
followed within approved time constraints.
