Community Academy of Philadelphia
Hosts Production Company in ‘Godspell’
events to show their appreciation for
soldiers who have made our freedom
possible. Since the launch of their
first professional production,
Cinderella in 2011, Sing for America
has raised over $40,000 which has
been able to support numerous
families. They produce these shows
in order to raise funds to assist local
military families with rent, food,
heating and electric bills along with
travel expenses for families to see a
wounded soldier before surgery.
It was a great night at CAP to
support a great cause while enjoying
live family friendly entertainment.
Statue of Medal of Honor
Recipient to be Dedicated
The Michael J. Crescenz Memorial
Foundation will be dedicating a
larger-than-lifestatue of the only
Philadelphia residet to receive the
MOH for action during the Vietnam
War. The dedication will be held on
April 24 at noon at the Philadelphia
Vietnam Veterans Memorial at
Penn’s Landing.
The foundation is composed of
veterans and has raised the needed
funds since December 2014. The
statue was designed and sculpted by
local sculptor Chad Fisher. The statue was created, to honor
Michael J. Crescenz who received the
medal posthumously for eliminating
three machine gun bunkers which had
halted the advance of his company
on Nov. 20, 1968.
The 19-year-old Army corporal was
a 1966 graduate of Cardinal
Dougherty High School.
“We chose the site of the Memorial
Retired
Police Officers
because we wanted to place
Michael’s statue in a place of honor
with his 647 brothers,” noted Tom
Roberts, the chairman of the
foundation. “The outpouring of
support we’ve received in such a short
time for this project has been
extremely gratifying.”
The ceremony will feature remarks
by Thomas Roberts, Charles
Crescenz, (Michael’s older brother)
who served as a Marine in Vietnam;
Ed Prendergast CD Class of 66 and
William “Doc”Stafford, who was the
medic that attempted to treat
Michael for his ultimately fatal
wounds.
The 8.5-foot bronze statue which
depicts Michael in combat gear
charging the enemy with an M-60
machine gun, will be installed on a
pedestal on the south side of the
Memorial. The VA Medical Center
was renamed for Michael last May.

Introducing New Lieutenant Michael Hooven at JPCA
By ROSELLA LaFEVRE
Juniata News
A Juniata Park native now directs
the police officers who serve the
neighborhood.
Lieutenant Michael Hooven, raised
in Juniata, introduced himself at the
April meeting of the Juniata Park
Civic Association held last Tuesday
at 7 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club.
At previous meetings, the community
was told that Lieutenant Arch who
oversaw the 24th Police District’s
Public Service Area 1 would be
retiring this spring. Lt. Hooven wasn’t
the only person to introduce
themselves at the April meeting.
The community also met Evelyn Del
Valle, owner of Delia Maria Home
Care Agency, which opened for
business in August 2015 and now
seeks zoning approval to operate its
administrative offices in the former
flower shop at 1501 E. Hunting Park
Ave. Del Valle told JPCA meeting
attendees that her business, which
connects adults over 18 years old
with in-home care aides, would not
bring increased traffic to the area.
Delia Maria Home Care Agency
employs aides who are certified
through the state and the agency is
reimbursed the aides’ wages through
the state. They’ve employed dozens
of aides from the neighborhood since
opening in August. The neighborhood
voted to send a letter of approval to
the Zoning Board of Adjustment for
Del Valle’s April 20th hearing.
Also present at the meeting was
Yoonny Contreros, who has applied
for zoning approval of a private
hookah club at 918 E. Hunting Park
Ave. Several times, the applications
for zoning approval of the club have
been refused. The applicant has a new
lawyer, Shawn Ward, to help him get
zoning approval. Ward is expected
to contact Clarke with more
information soon.
Doryan De Angel from the
Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Waters-
hed Partnership came as a guest
speaker and brought two park
ambassadors employed to walk the
park. Pedro, one of the ambassadors
shared that he and his partner often
work at the “I” and Ramona entry to
the park. They often see illegal dirt
biking and ATVing, he said, but the
police have responded to their calls
and helped cut down on this activity,
which happens most often between
1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
The day of the meeting, Clarke
received an email saying ballroom at
“I” and Luzerne Streets has been
refused zoning for a banquet hall to
serve 600 people. There was no
voting on this issue at the meeting.
On May 7, the Juniata Park Parade
returns; those walking in the parade
will start from Pep Boys and walk

about 1.5 miles through the
neighborhood. Sister Elaine from Holy
Innocents came to the JPCA meeting
and shared details; she also said they
seek some volunteers to help on the
day of the event.
A spokesman from the office of
Councilwoman Maria QuinonesSanchez announced that Piccoli will
soon start an 18-month renovation
and as part of that, we’ll see more
green space in the park.
Officer Tina Willis said that a
mailbox for unwanted pharmaceuticals is permanently installed in the
25th Police District side of the
headquarters shared with the 24th
District. She also shared that the
3100 block of Almond Street along
Powers Park will now be home to a

Pizza Boli’s at Glendale Street & Erie Avenue which opened in 2015 has Grand Opening celebration to celebrate its franchise success
On Saturday, April 16th, Awardwinning pizzeria franchise Pizza
Boli’s celebrated the grand opening
of its store in Juniata Park. The
restaurant is located at 3883
Glendale Street.
Pizza Boli’s is already a hometown
favorite in Maryland, D.C. and
Virginia. The Juniata Park location
represents one of six Pizza Boli’s
locations in Pennsylvania. In
celebration, the restaurant offered
free slices of cheese pizza and 12oz.
sodas from 1-3 PM on Saturday and
large one-topping pizzas for just
$5.99 for carryout through April
30th.
Over 700 people came out in those
two-hours on Saturday to enjoy a slice
and a soda.
The company’s Director of
Franchising Iqbal Syed explains, “Like
all of our restaurants, this new
location will stand out by using fresh
quality ingredients with more variety
than any major pizza chain.”
Pizza Boli’s pizzas are made with
the restaurant’s fresh signature
dough and baked in special ovens.
Although Pizza Boli’s is well-known
for its pizza, it also offers authentic
pasta, salads, submarine sandwiches,
wings, strombolis, and desserts. It
provides delivery service, party
catering, and take-out.
The very first Pizza Boli’s opened
its doors in the Baltimore, Maryland
neighborhood of Mount Washington
in 1985. Now the restaurant chain
has 74 stores in Maryland, Virginia,
District of Columbia, Pennsylvania
and New Jersey.
Owners and staff at Pizza Boli’s in Juniata celebrated a successful Grand Opening
on Saturday, April 16th. Free Slices and 12 oz. sodas were given away to over 700
people between 1:00-3:00 pm. Power 99 radio broadcasted live and entertained
the crowds arriving to enjoy a slice. Although open since 2015, Pizza Boli’s wanted
to establish themselves as one of the neighborhood favorites before holding its
Grand Opening celebration this past Saturday.

Holy Innocents “Throwback Reunion”
by Kate Clarke
for the Juniata News
The call went out — ‘Come back to
The Inn’. The Inn, of course being
Holy Innocents for the “Throwback
Reunion” reuniting Juniata Friends,
Alumni and Parishioners. They did
come back — in a very big way — on
Saturday evening April 9, 2016,
close to 500 people packed the
Parish Hall to reunite and catch up
with old friends/classmates and all
for a good cause, The Holy Innocents
School Children.
The evening started off with Mass
at 4:30 and a tour of the school
immediately following with the party
starting at 6:00. Entertainment was
provided by Jerry Boyle and the
“Violations”, along with DJ Dyn-OMite. Both did a spectacular job
keeping the crowd dancing and
singing. The price of admission
covered draft beer, food and soda.
There was also a Chinese Auction and
50/50 Raffle.
Former Juniata residents,
parishioners and alumni from as far
away as Florida showed up to
celebrate the School, the
Neighborhood, the Playgrounds and
of course, the winning Championship
Teams of Holy Innocents, the Boys
and Girls Club, Juniata Bears and the
ever famous Piccoli Spartans. The
words that echoed throughout the
night were, “what a great place
Juniata was to grow up” and how Holy
Innocents School played a
significant part in that growing up.
Father Tom Higgins, Pastor of Holy
Innocents, realized in conversations
through his 15 plus years in the
Parish that many people value their
connections to the Neighborhood and
Holy Innocents itself. But also
realizing that Catholic School
education is dwindling due to dollars,
and with many parishes closing, it led
him to start thinking of what could
be done to keep it all alive. Therefore,
he put out a call to form a Board of
Directors for the School and in
stepped Thomas Gregory, Holy
Innocents Class of ’73, formerly of
Claridge Street, to start the process.
With today’s world of Social Media,
especially Face Book, their small
database of former alumni began to
grow as more and more people
reconnected. As these reconnections started, the talk turned to other
things in the community besides Holy
Innocents: the days of the
championship teams from the
Playgrounds, (Ferko and Piccoli) and
the Boys and Girls Club, (yes, we even
had championship teams then) but it
was also the time to relive some of
the “Glory Days” and with that it was
time to recruit someone to do it.
Jimmy Hillig, Class of ’63, had just
successfully held a fundraiser to
honor a former classmate who had
recently suffered a severe stroke.
Jimmy was talking with some friends
who thought it would be a great idea
to get the old teams together, the
Juniata Bears, the Piccoli Spartans

and yes, the Holy Innocents Football
Teams. A light bulb then went off in
Jimmy’s head … why not combine a
S c h o o l / N e i g h b o r h o o d / Te a m
Reunion? Having just joined the
newly formed Board of Directors he
brought it to them and the idea took
off. Word began to spread. In the
old days, the heart of the Community
was Holy Innocents School, so why
not make it a benefit for the
children? The Throwback Reunion
was born.
The committee reached out to as
many as they could. Post cards were
sent, word of mouth, social media, it
took off. Ideas began to flow and
the end result was an incredible
night.
Ed O’Brien, ’61 who went to both
Holy Inn and North Catholic and is
presently living in Bensalem,
commented that going to both those
schools was the “best time of his
life”. He plans to return and also
support the other endeavors. He
commented that, it’s the people of
Juniata who make it what it is and
what it was, a great place.
Tom Gregory also loves Juniata and
his years in the neighborhood.
Unfortunately, family circumstances
caused a move but he’s back to work
to sustain Catholic Education
especially for the children of Holy
Innocents. Tom said that many good
things will be happening, inside and
outside the community, including a
Golf Outing, Black Tie Events and a
Summer Mixer in 2017.
The Throwback Reunion was a
major success. Many talked of the
days of Monsignor Martin Lynch,
Founder and Pastor of Holy Innocents
who was feared by many in the room
with his ever present stern scowl! The
present Sisters of the Parish handed
out homework assignments to
everyone to complete a data card for
the database, and to encourage
friends to get in touch. However,
there were no wooden rulers in sight!
Old friends were reunited,
classmates got a chance to see each
other and catch up, new friends were
made, some got to relive the “glory
days” and Holy Innocents School
benefited, not a bad night for a bunch
of “kids”, who grew up in a little
neighborhood called Juniata and had
the time of their lives.

Bethel Chapel Church
Corner of “K” & Lycoming Streets
Slip and Fall Cure
Last Wednesday I was driving home
from a dentist appointment near King
of Prussia. Soon after I turned on to
Highway 1 from the Schuylkill, I
noticed a billboard advertising a slip
and fall law firm. A customer of that
firm was quoted as saying that those
lawyers, “Helped put my life back
together.”
I have no idea what happened so
that person needed to have their life
put back together, but it must have
been the result of some devastating
event. As I thought about that, it
occurred to me that I have never
made an appointment to talk to a slip
and fall lawyer. I guess that’s
because I have never felt the need to
talk to one. I take that as good news
because something really bad would
have to happen before I would want
to sit down with one of those lawyers.
That got me to thinking.
Just as I see no need to contact a
slip and fall lawyer (thankfully!), there
are a lot of people who see no need
to pursue a relationship with God.
They see no need to get to know the
Bible or worship in a Bible-teaching
church. Would you be one of those
people?
I’m not saying that you have
anything against having a
relationship with God—you probably
wouldn’t say it out loud—but you just
honestly don’t see a need for it. I get
it. We don’t generally add things to
our busy schedules unless we feel a
real need to do so. For example,
you’re not going make a doctor’s
appointment when you are feeling
well (except maybe for an annual
physical).
That brings me to some questions
that you may have already asked
yourself. Why should you spend the
time and energy studying the Bible
or going to church? Is that really
important? You may not see the need
to do them, or maybe you don’t think
doing those things will solve the
problems that you have right now.
You won’t be surprised to learn that
I DO think spending time learning
about the Bible and going to a Bibleteaching church is important to me.
Why should those things be
important to you, too, though?
To answer that question, we need
to begin at the beginning. God is our
Maker, our Designer, the One who
knows what our hearts really need.

Family Owned and Operated Since 1960.
He made us to have a relationship
with Him. In fact, when when Adam
and Eve had a close, ongoing
relationship with Him, everything was
perfect.
In spite of that, though, our first
parents ruined it by rebelling against
the One who made them and had
given them everything they needed.
The result is that “your iniquities
[sins] have made a separation
between you and your God, and your
sins have hidden His face from you
so that He does not hear” (Isaiah
59:2). Adam and Eve aren’t the only
guilty ones because all of us “have
sinned and fall short of the glory of
God” (Romans 3:23).
Sin is such a huge barrier between
us and our Maker that God will not
overlook it. That’s because God’s
Page 14
“eyes are too pure to approve evil,
and [He] can not look on wickedness
with favor…” (Habakkuk 1:13). God
even went so far as to command us
to “… be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter
1:16). Also see Leviticus 11:44 and
19:2.
Since our relationship with God is
broken and we can’t do anything to
fix it, God stepped in and
“demonstrates His own love toward
us, in that while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us. Much more then,
having now been justified by His
blood, we shall be saved from the
wrath of God through Him” (Romans
5:8–9).
We should read the Bible and
worship in a Bible-teaching church
because we WANT to do those things.
Why? If God loved us so much that
He let the penalty of our sin fall on
Him, then how can we help but not
love Him for that? We understand
this in our human relationships. If you
love someone, you want to get to
know that person better. If God has
given you a love for Him, then getting
to know God better will be a delight
and not just a duty.
“And not only this, but we also exult
in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have now received
the reconciliation” (Romans 5:11).
If you would like to learn more about
Christ’s love for you, let me know.
He can put your life back together.

“The Revenant” (R) — Leonardo
DiCaprio acts as hard as humanly
possible in this Oscar-winning thriller
showcasing
nature’s
fury.
Frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leo)
narrowly wins a fight with a grizzly
bear after he and his fur-trapping
employers are put on the run by angry
natives. Betrayed and left for dead
in the frozen wilderness, Glass goes
on the most brutal hike anyone’s ever
taken, hell-bent on survival and
revenge against his backstabbing
buddy (Tom Hardy).
Director Alejandro Gonzalez
Inarritu really hammers in nature’s
serenity between and during hellish
trials of survival. The sound of freshmelted snow trickling into brooks
mingles into every shot, done mostly
with natural lighting. While he has
very few lines — not counting grunts
and howls of pain — DiCaprio shows
an inhuman dedication to character.
“The Lady in the Van” (PG-13)
— The woman in the van is a fixture in
the neighborhood. She’s well-read
and perceptive with a dry wit, but also
cantankerous and positively smelly.
Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith) is a
tolerated presence in her London
neighborhood, where she lives in her
van and parks in a different spot
every few weeks. She is allowed to
pull into the driveway of playwright
Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings) for a
short stay, which turns out to be about
15 years.

Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant”
It’s based on a true story and
written by the man it happened to.
On-screen, Bennet’s character is split
in two (both played by Jennings), one
version of himself does the writing,
the other is more observant of the
outside world. With this little device,
the writer of the movie is able to talk
to himself, suss out any funny
observations and work through innerconflicts. Smith is up to her usual
tricks, but brings a certain edge to
this wounded character that makes
her stand out from other prickly
misfits.
“Ip Man 3” (PG-13) — Probably
the most exciting martial-arts
franchise to come out in recent years
comes to a close (maybe) with this
latest chapter — pitting the hero of
Hong Kong against Mike Tyson’s
villain. Ip Man (Donnie Yen) imported
the Wing Chun fighting style to Hong
Kong, and was mentor to Bruce Lee
(who is briefly depicted in this movie
as a young hopeful). This time it’s
1959, things are going well for Wing
Chun and Hong Kong, except for a
greedy foreign boss named Frank
(Mike Tyson) targeting Ip Man’s
school. Awesome fight scenes ensue,
culminating in a tight collision of the
continents between Tyson and Yen.
“Norm of the North” (PG) — The
human imagination is limitless. The
mind of a child, innocent of the norms
and structures of our grownup reality,
can comprehend so much and find
wonder in things strange and
familiar. This movie doesn’t tap into
any of that. It’s a forgettable
animated feature where Rob
Schneider voices a polar bear that
goes to New York to stop
development of his Arctic habitat.
Also, he’s got bargain-basement
minions in the form of flatulent
lemmings that can’t talk. You can do
better; “Ice Age 3” could do better.
