Act 2007 (protection of cultural objects on loan)
Lender
The object listed below will be lent by La Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di
Napoli e Pompei represented by their Soprintendente Dott.ssa Teresa Elena Cinquantaquattro of
Piazza Museo Nazionale, 19 - 80135 Napoli, Italy.
Excavation dates
The material dates from the Roman Empire in the first century (around 79AD). All material originates
from excavations carried out between 1710 and 2009 within the sites Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis
and Stabiae. All the material was excavated by agents of the King of Naples (after 1816 the Kings of
the Two Sicilies) or after 1860 by representatives of the archaeological authorities of the Italian State.
Acquisition
th
th
All of the material is on loan from the Italian state. Following excavations in the 18 and 19 centuries,
the material was kept by the Kings of Naples (after 1816 the Kings of the Two Sicilies) at the Royal
th
Palace in Portici before being moved to its current location in Naples Museum in the early 19 century.
In 1860 the ownership passed to the Italian State and it has remained so since then.
Since its excavation, including during the period 1933 to 1945, all material has been the property of
the Italian state. No item has ever been alienated from the collection.
