The Future is here:
In 2013 the YMCA of Liberia is undergoing its largest and most vital
transition in its 132 year history. Our country has evolved, and so have
the needs of our members and those we serve with our diverse and
dynamic programs.
We have committed to building a new facility that will allow us to grow
with the youth bulge for generations to come, and keep the promise
our founders made to Liberia in 1881. We intend to provide access to
about 40,000 youth and residents per year with services in health and
wellness programs, sports and recreation, arts, peace and cultural
education and trainings at the Maye Howell Community YMCA in Congo
Town, Old Road.
We invite you to learn how you can help us build the type of facility our
youth and children deserve, and give our youth, children and
community a renewed sense of pride and direction. We can’t make it
without you!!!

Introduction
Making the Case for Charitable Support to the Maye Howell Community YMCA Capital Project - Liberia
Who are we?
Liberia YMCA (YMCA), a national ecumenical youth service organization
was enacted by an act of the 44th Legislature of the Republic of Liberia
(1960-1961). The YMCA was first established in Harper, Maryland
County, Liberia in 1881, by the late Episcopal Bishop Samuel David
Fugerson and later established in Monrovia in 1927 by Mr. James
McCarthy and others.
The YMCA remains focused in youth development programs delivery and
services especially in the areas of lifeskills development, livelihood
support, health and wellness, formal and informal education and youth
leadership development. It is a member of the Africa Alliance of YMCAs
and World Alliance of YMCAs but remains an independent national
Association established under the laws of Liberia. The Liberia YMCA
currently works in six (6) of Liberia’s 15 counties from 12 program
centers. We are a membership organization.
Why we exist?
Our YMCA works to address dominant social issues that are related to its
four areas of focus (youth knowledge & skills development, Youth health
& wellness, Youth Sports & Recreation and Youth Arts, Peace & Culture).
We work with communities, the government and development partners
to identify and to address these needs with the communities. We
promote diversity, social bonding and exalt youth potential – That They
All Shall Be One (John 17:21).
Our Services target and reach:
 Rural & urban youth
 In-School and Out-of-School youth
 Boys & young women and girls
 Children & youth with special conditions
(physically challenged)
How do we server youth?
We work with partners and the government in nurturing the potential
of every child or youth in our programs through:
 Supervised learning opportunities
 Job training / placement opportunities (internships & young
professional on-the-job trainings for youth
 Mentorships
 Peer-to-peer learning exchanges
 Exposures
What is distinctive about our organization?
We believe in the potential of every young person to succeed. We
provide hands-on services/engagements to help youth belief in
themselves and provide them opportunities to exercise leadership. We
tolerate and endure the errors/failures of our program participants as
the price we pay for the experience they need to succeed.
Who do we serve?
Liberia has a large youth bulge. Youth (ages 18-35) and children make up
67% of the population of 3.5M. The national illiterate rate is 65%;
poverty rate is 64% and unemployment about 80%. Many people survive
in informal economic sector activities. Many children and youth are selfreared or become breadwinners for their families. Youth idleness is
profound due to the lack of supervised programs and safe spaces for
children and youth to play and learn.
Page 2
Project Overview
What are our goals for the future? What needs to be
accomplished?
We want to develop a new YMCA Youth Center in Congo Town/Old Road
– the Maye Howell Community YMCA, where young people will grow to
reach their potential (and where communities will come together)
through sports, recreation, health and wellness, education, arts, peace
and cultural programs.
The current YMCA facility in Central Monrovia serves over 50,000 users a
year (at least 200 users per work day). It hosts the largest annual
vacation children development program in Monrovia for over 800 kids;
and the largest low cost youth computer training program (over 1,000
learners per 4-month cycles); and hosts the YMCA administrative offices.
Its indoor gym hosts games and practice sessions of university teams,
basketball leagues, etc. The facility’s conference hall hosts seminars,
workshops, and community events. This physical asset is the largest
contributor to our local revenue with a resounding management record.
The new facility will increase our reach to youth and communities and
generate additional revenue for programs and overheads.
In the face of the extreme limitation of safe spaces and social programs,
the Y is a glaring hub for our youth and children. One recreational space
near Monrovia takes in kids at a membership fee of US$8.00 per visit; a
fee not affordable for average Liberian families. Our facility will charge
membership fee of US$4.00 per month per child (5-13years) and
US$5.00 per youth and midgets (14-25) and give our children the joy and
benefits of play and learning.
The Relevance, Social Impact and Sustainability
Today, the challenges include youth idleness, limited family time,
poverty, and the lack of programs and safe spaces for youth and
children to play and learn. The YMCA wants to work with youth
themselves and the community to help address some of these
challenges in the Congo Town Community and its environs (consisting 8
other communities with an estimated 300,000 people). The Maye
Howell Community YMCA would serve at least 38,475 youth and
residents per year with services in sports and recreation, health and
wellness, workshop/conference services, theatre, peace and cultural
programs.
The facility will respond to these needs and the associated social issues
and influence personal and social changes by increasing youth access to
supervised sports leagues, dance classes, arts and crafts, life-skills
workshops, leadership development & volunteerism, and providing
services for adults and families for health & wellness, group exercise &
fitness (cardio, aerobics, muscular conditioning). Local institutions will
also benefit the convenience of our meeting and conference spaces
and be saved the inconvenience and cost of traffic and expensive
venues for similar quality of service in central town.
This YMCA will be a community asset that will make our community an
even better place to live and work. It will be enjoyed by people of all
ages, abilities and backgrounds.
In addition to social impact, the facility will generate revenue (est.
$225,000 per annum) on a fees-for-service basis and will cover 100% its
operational cost, provide 43 local jobs (full time and part time) and
contribute to the Liberia YMCA’s overhead cost thereby being a model
sustainable social project.
Invest in youth. Build tomorrow
today for a better and peaceful
Liberia. Your gift to the YMCA is
a partnership in mission.

Inaugural Partners
Where we are, Who are Our Partners?
A number of individuals and institutions believe with us that improved
social infrastructures with supervised programs for youth and children
will reknit social values, make our community better and safer, and
provide an environment to develop our current youth into our future
leaders. Our inaugural partners bring to the initiative the combined
benefits of passion, history and disciplines in architecture, programs and
services planning around the world.
The two city lots on which the facility is to be built was the location of
the family home of the Howells (family of the first US fraternal
secretary to the Liberia YMCA, David Howell, 1946); and hosts the
remains of Maye Howell, wife of David Howell. Pete Howell, son of
David Howell, and wife, Luesette, graciously travelled to Monrovia from
Trinidad and Tobago in October 2013 to transfer title of the property to
the Liberia YMCA for the project.
Our partners have demonstrated landmark passion and commitment to
the initial processes of the action. In December 2011 and August 2013,
Hidell Associates’ principal, William Hidell, III, visited Monrovia to collect
data leading to the current design and plan of the Maye Howell
Community YMCA. Hidell Associates Architects have vast experience in
planning, designing and construction compiling for more than 230 public
library projects, 50 religious facilities, 120 educational facilities, 15
recreational facilities and 50 theaters in the USA. Their creativity and
unwavering commitment to the highest standards of professional
practice have been recognized with various awards, and numerous
features in local and national publications in the USA.
The YMCA Millennium Club is a membership of seniors and patrons
who identify with this cause and are pledging at least US$1,000 each as
individual contributions. There are at least 15 pledges to date with
US$6,000 received in cash. Contributors to date include, His Excellency
Amb. Joseph N. Boakai, Vice President of Liberia, Dr. Ronald McClain,
President, National Oil Company of Liberia, Hon. T. Nelson Williams,
Managing Director, Liberia Petroleum Refining Corporation of Liberia,
Mr. Karl Cottrell, President, Chevron Liberia Limited, Mr. Kenneth Y.
Best, Publisher Liberia Observer Corporation, etc. Sign in today as a
Millennium Club member and help build the Maye Howell
Community YMCA in Congo Town/Old Road.
In February 2013, the International Group of YMCA USA, also sent the
Director of Movement Strengthening, Renata Ferrari to provide planning
and capability building support to the Liberia YMCA for the organization
and successful conduct of a Capital Campaign to raise funds to finance
the project; banking on its experience of supporting Capital Campaign
projects with other YMCAs around the World. The International Group
provides capacity and program financing supports to the Liberia YMCA
for over 50 years.

DonimaSport’s Board of Directors have also been highly supportive in
funding travels to Monrovia of Doc Lawson to provide programs and
activities supports to the Liberia YMCA to strengthen existing programs
and their fit into the new facility. Doc Lawson has mobilized tons of
sports equipment already shipped to Liberia for use by the YMCA in its
social programs. It is also mobilizing other technical and resource
partners to the project.

The main facility will be named in honor of Maye Howell, wife of David
Howell. David, with his wife Maye, and their two sons arrived in Liberia
by sea on Thanksgiving Day in 1946, as the first fraternal secretary
appointed by the International Group of YMCA of the USA to help
strengthen the struggling Liberia YMCA. The family worked hard to
develop the Liberia YMCA into a recognized service organization. David
died of natural cause in 1985; and his widow, Maye, was unfortunately
shot and passed in their home in 1990 during the civil war.
The campaign welcomes gifts and pledges over a period of up to 3
years. All donors of gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized on the
donor wall as described below. In addition, naming opportunities for
gifts of $10,000 or more are available. Please contact the YMCA

Liberia YMCA Timeline
In 1881 a group of community leaders led by Bishop Samuel David
Fugerson of the Episcopal Church, gathered to organize a YMCA in
Harper, Maryland County, Liberia. They recognized the need to provide a
safe and inspiring place for young boys to flourish while fostering
personal and social change.
In 1927, the Monrovia charter was born, thanks to James McCarthy and
others.
In 1946 the first fraternal US YMCA Secretary arrived. David N. Howard
and wife, Maye Howell with their two sons, David and Pedro, arrived by
sea on Thanksgiving Day.
In 1954, the current YMCA headquarter building was dedicated.
In 1955, the first black, a Liberian, Charles D. Sherman, elected as
President of the World Alliance of YMCAs.
The YMCA was later enacted by an act of the 44th Legislature of the
Republic of Liberia (1960-1961)
From 1990 – 2003 (civil war), the YMCA worked with communities
supporting basic needs in nutrition, remedial education, disarmament,
reintegration & rehabilitation supports (to ex-combatants),
apprenticeship placements, peace education, etc, for youth and children.
Both girls and boys became equally attended to and admitted into
membership and leadership.
In 2002, Liberia YMCA heads Africa Alliance of YMCAs. Eugene H. Cooper
elected as President.
2004 – (post-civil war), the YMCA works with the government of Liberia
and development partners to deliver services to address critical post war
youth development needs in: youth education, youth employment,
youth reproductive health services, youth peace and civic engagement
programs.
