Unit 2: Decimals Test 6 NBT.7 (Divide Decimals): Homework/Study Guide October 29 – November 2,
2012
Example 1. You can use a decimal model to divide decimals. Find the quotient: 0.2 ÷ 5 = ⃝
Strategy: Use a model. Use a 10 by 10 grid. (1) Shade 0.2 of the model. (2) Use circles to
separate the shaded area into 5 equal groups. (3) Count the number of squares in each group.
There are 4 squares in each group. Four squares represents 4 hundredths, or 0.04.
Solution:
0.2 ÷ 5 = 0.04

Example 2. Mrs. Collins bought 8 towels for $66.24. Each towel was the same price. What the
price of one towel?
Strategy: Write an equation for the problem. Then divide from left to right.
Let p represent the price of one towel.
$66.24 ÷ 8 = p Solution: The price of one
towel is $8.28.

Estimate the quotients. You can use multiples and compatible numbers to estimate decimal
quotients. Estimate. 249.7 ÷ 31 = ⃝
Step 1: Round the divisor, 31 to the nearest 10.
31 rounded to the nearest ten is 30.
Step 2: Find the multiples of 30 that the dividend, 249.7 is between. 249.7 is between 240
and 270.
Step 3: Divide each multiple by the rounded divisor, 30. 240 ÷ 30 = 8
270 ÷ 30 = 9
So, two possible estimates are 8 and 9.
