G d l e u i i d F e e h T The Nugget Markets handbook to all things fabulous for the new year. Issue No. 4 • January & February 2012 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS: WHAT’S ON YOUR LIST? Josh Dwinell (Housewares) It’s that time of year again, when many of us partake in the time-honored tradition of sitting down and making a list of things we’d like to change in our lives. For some — okay, most — of us, that list includes three big items: changing our diets to be healthier, losing weight, and exercising more. If eating healthy and increasing exercise are on your to-do list for 2012, I recommend checking out CytoSport Muscle Milk to help you with your workouts. A precise protein blend, Muscle Milk comes in several forms, including powders, bars and ready-to-drink beverages. They offer a variety of flavors, and in my opinion these are the best tasting protein supplements on the market! CALMING THE STRESS-STORM Cassie Newman (Healthy Living – El Dorado Hills) After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s time to relieve some stress. New Chapter Perfect Calm is a great, organic, whole-food multi-vitamin with added organic herbs that can help calm stress. Holy basil (known variously as “the queen of herbs” and “the elixir of life,” but most commonly as Tulsi) is an amazing herb that is said to help you achieve a balanced mood. It has been used for thousands of years, mostly in India, and some people believe it can help you live longer. Try combining holy basil with chamomile and lemon balm to help put you on the path to a cool and collected day. SNACK THE HEALTHFUL WAY Daniel Williams (Dairy & Frozen) After the holidays, we all look for ways to eat healthier — and let’s be honest, we all enjoy a snack. Keep your snacking healthy this season by loading up on delicious fruit treats. Wawona frozen fruit from Fresno has been grown on a family farm for more than 60 years. Their fresh-frozen fruit is hand picked at the peak of ripeness and processed within 24 hours to capture that fresh-fruit taste. When fresh peaches and strawberries are out of season, you can still find them in these frozen bags. Try these simple recipes using Wawona frozen fruit to create healthy snacks all season long: • Make a "summer" smoothie with a cup of frozen peaches, 3/4 cup Greek yogurt and drizzle of honey • Top hot cereal such as oatmeal with frozen berries for extra nutrition in the morning • Combine frozen strawberries with sparkling water for a refreshing drink BONELESS, SKINLESS, AND SO SATISFYING Andrea Kaine (Meat & Seafood) After indulging in far too much heavy food over the holidays, it’s time to get that healthy diet back into gear. Our Fresh to Market boneless skinless chicken breasts are a great way to start. Boneless skinless chicken breasts offer a variety of beneficial attributes, including: • An excellent source of quality protein, with more than 50 percent of the daily value in a four-ounce serving • A good source of two key minerals, iron and zinc, needed for immune strength and healthy blood cells • A powerhouse of B vitamins, particularly Vitamin B12, which supports nerve health, and niacin (or B3), vital for fat burning • Adding chicken to lunch or dinner may help control appetite and aid in weight control, as research studies show that eating protein at every meal helps control appetite Fresh to Market boneless skinless chicken breasts are also free range and humanely raised in Sonoma county. They contain no added hormones or preservatives and are 100 percent natural. Stop by our meat departments to pick up a package today! KOMBUCHA Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) Did you know that today’s well-known Kombucha drink is actually a natural folk remedy that has been in existence for more than 2,000 years? It got its name from a Korean physician, Dr. Kombu, who treated Emperor Inkyo with this fermented tea or “Cha” from China, thus Kombu + Cha = Kombucha. Made with tea (usually green or black), organic sugar and a live kombucha culture, this popular health beverage is thought to help stimulate metabolism and maintain a healthy immune system. Don’t be scared by the SCOBY – a rubbery disk-like substance that floats in Kombucha. The Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeasts (SCOBY) feeds on the sugar to produce all the nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins and lactic acids contained in this beverage. Feeling adventurous? Make your very own Kombucha. Find the Oregon Kombucha Starter Kit in our tea aisle. Before you know it, you’ll have a gallon of homemade Kombucha. The kit includes tea and live culture! KEEP HYDRATED DURING YOUR WORKOUT Lorna Parton (Healthy Living) We all know that with increased exercise comes an increased need for hydration, and for those of us vowing to move more in 2012, it's important that we remain vigilant about our water intake. While all water works for keeping thirst at bay, one of our favorite bottled waters on the market right now is Penta. Its clean, refreshing taste always hits the spot after a particularly enthusiastic round of kick-boxing, and there have even been studies that have shown Penta might have a leg up on the competition when it comes to increasing antioxidant activity in your body. Antioxidants are important for helping keep free radicals from damaging cells in our bodies, which can lead to diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and these studies have shown that Penta helps to reduce "oxidative activity" in cells. Though the research is ongoing, one thing we're sure of is that the ultra-pure taste of this water makes our post-workout thirst a whole lot easier to quench! NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION NO. 1: BE MORE LIKE PIAVE VECCHIO Kaelynn Medbery (Specialty Cheese) As I was thinking about new year’s resolutions this season, I stumbled across the following description of one of my favorite cheeses, Piave Vecchio: “…named ‘extra old’ for its extra time in the cellar — an investment that pays off in a rock-hard body glistening with a deep golden tan.” After a quick chuckle, I thought to myself, this year I’m going to be more like Piave Vecchio. Now, don’t kid yourself, I’m not going to work my butt off in the gym or anything … nope, I’m going to spend more time in a cellar! Okay, just kidding. But all jokes aside, Piave Vecchio is really a remarkable cheese, one that is often referred to as a young Parmigiano-Reggiano. It’s packed with a broad pallet of tropical fruits, sweet nuts and berries. If given a glass of fruity red wine, it might even sing! Come on, who can pass up that? EATING HEALTHY DOESN’T MEAN GIVING UP CHEESE! Kaelynn Medbery (Specialty Cheese) So it’s the New Year, and we’re all trying to lose those extra holiday pounds, right? And, if you’re like me, this year (just like every other year) you’ve vowed to cut out all fatty foods (including cheese), reduce your portion sizes and eat a bland diet of brown rice, lean protein and copious amounts of vegetables. Sound familiar? While eating sensible portions and focusing on lean proteins and lots of vegetables are always healthy diet choices, no one said you have to lose the flavor too. I say, this year why torture yourself? Try grating a little Parmesan over your brown rice, or even indulging in a quick bite of Sharp Cheddar instead of chocolate as your end-of-the-day treat. New research studies show that regular cheese consumption does not elevate artery-clogging cholesterol, and a one-ounce serving (which goes a long way when grated over veggies, fish or whole-grains) contains more protein and as much calcium as a glass of milk. VOLCANIC MINERAL REFRESHER WATER Jeff Weigel (DSD) What better way to recover from your intense New Year’s resolution work out than with a cold glass of water? What if the water was not only refreshing, but it actually helped aid in your body’s recovery from the workout? Volcanic Mineral Refresher water can help you do just that. It is 100 percent pure, high in pH and magnesium (which have been found to help the cardiovascular system), and tastes sweet and refreshing. Bottled since the 1870s, its delicious taste also makes it a perfect complement to food, wine and spirits. Try our Chipotle Lime London Broil recipe, available on our Web site: www.nuggetmarket.com/recipes GO NUTS FOR ALMONDS Katie Fisher (Bulk Foods) Mother Nature put just about everything in California almonds! These standout nuts supply a wealth of nutrients and according to numerous research studies (some from UC Davis), making almonds a regular part of your diet may give your health a boost. • Tops in Vitamin E: A one-ounce serving (20 almonds) is one of the best sources of this antioxidant vitamin that may help ward off cancer and other age-related ailments such as Alzheimer's disease. And researchers strongly suggest that Vitamin E from foods is best (rather than from supplements) for getting this vitamin's benefits. • Heart-health goodness: Almonds contain monounsaturated fats and unique compounds that help protect your heart. Studies show eating almonds four times a week lowers heart disease risk by more than 30 percent. Other research shows that including almonds in your diet also helps lower artery-clogging LDL cholesterol levels. • Weight-loss aid: Several research reports suggest that including almonds as part of a low-calorie diet further assists in trimming body fat and waistlines, along with curbing appetite, compared to just dieting without these nuts. • Blood sugar moderator: New evidence points to including almonds as part of an eating plan to help control healthy blood sugar levels (great news for people with diabetes!). • Mineral powerhouse: Almonds supply a wealth of minerals including manganese, crucial for the protection of various body cells, and potassium and magnesium, two minerals key to healthy blood pressure. • Add almonds to just about anything: Sprinkle almonds over morning cereal, use as a topper for steamed veggies or cooked grains, and toss into greens either raw or sautéed for a nutritional boost. PRODUCTS FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) • Nuun Hydration: To stay hydrated this winter season, try Nuun tablets! Their electrolytes speed water absorption so you stay hydrated – whether you’re skiing down the slopes or at the halfway mark of your next race. Nuun tabs dissolve quickly, contain important electrolytes, and have no carbohydrates, zero sugar and less than eight calories per tablet. • Perfect Foods Bars: Attention all health-conscious eaters in search of a truly nutritious bar: Perfect Foods bars are your solution! These bars have a base of either peanut butter or almond butter and organic honey, which helps to sustain energy levels and prevent energy crashes. Every bar contains more than 20 nutrient-dense organic whole foods and whole-food proteins. In addition to the nutrition benefits of this bar, we love them because they are just so yummy! • Honey Stinger Organic Waffles: Have you heard of a guy named Lance Armstrong? You might know about him because he is a world-class cyclist. We like to talk about him because he was the person who suggested to Honey Stinger that they produce organic waffles, which they did and we now love! Modeled after the waffles that are sold throughout Europe and eaten by professional cyclists including Lance, these waffles make a great snack! • Simpli Apricot Oatmeal: Old-fashioned whole grain oats + delicious apricots = an irresistible combination. We also love the fact that this oatmeal is instant, gluten free and contains no high-fructose corn syrup. This flavorful oatmeal is sure to knock your socks off with its great taste, while providing the natural fiber and protein that your body needs. GAME DAY SNACKS Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) It’s football season and the big game is just around the corner. If you’re stressing about whether your favorite team will take home the championship this year, distract yourself by planning the important things, like what you will be eating during the big game! • Papalote Salsa: This locally produced salsa will be a favorite while watching the big showdown this year. Featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Papalote’s Roasted Tomato Salsa defeated the Iron Chef. Lucky for us, this roasted salsa is not only irresistible, but it’s local, too — and it’s a staple at Papalote Mexican Grill, located in the heart of the Mission district in San Francisco. • Jimmy T’s Barbecue Sauce: This local barbecue line is one of our favorites! It was created by Chef Jimmy T., who is locally based in Sacramento and can often be found passing out samples of his barbecue goodness in our stores. Keep an eye out for him and be sure to get a taste of this delicious sauce! • Wing-Time Buffalo Wing Sauce: Consider yourself a wing connoisseur? Instead of making the trip to Upstate New York — the birthplace of Buffalo wings — grab a bottle of finger-licking Wing-Time Buffalo Wing Sauce! These Buffalo-style chicken wing sauces have traditional flavor profiles, and they are also sugar free and gluten free. We prefer the Medium spice, but if you like to live on the wild side, try the Hot! GOT WINGS? Jeff Clark (Executive Chef) No football celebration should happen without Nugget’s Fresh to Market wings! With five different flavors to choose from, our Fresh to Market wings are sure to please any palate. Here are some of the varieties we offer*: • Beer Braised: Cooked until they’re fall-apart tender, these are then flash-fried until crispy and tossed in a whole-grain mustard sauce. • Pineapple Teriyaki: A little sweet, a little tangy and full of Asian flair. • Guinness Wings: Marinated in Guinness, then breaded, fried golden and tossed with hot sauce, this is one of our most popular flavors. • Hot Buffalo: The classic style; fried golden and tossed in wing sauce. • Thai Wings: Marinated in lemongrass, jalapeño, and soy sauce, they are sweet and spicy, with a hint of salt. *Selection varies by location SAY HELLO TO FAMOUS DAVE Scott Touchstone (Grocery) “Famous” Dave Anderson loves two things: good-tastin’ ribs and barbecuing. GIVE THE SWEETEST GIFT OF ALL — SPECIALTY CHOCOLATE! Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) Gifting chocolate as a means of expressing love has become a widely practiced tradition. But did you know the link between chocolate and romance dates back thousands of years to the ancient Mayans? Back then, it was tradition to share a spicy cocoa beverage during weddings and other special religious ceremonies. This Valentine’s Day, keep the tradition alive by giving some of our favorite high-quality chocolates to someone special: • Scharffen Berger Roasted Cacao Nibs: Nibs have a crunchy texture and a roasted yet subtle unsweetened chocolaty flavor. They are great for adding flair to your favorite home-baked winter treats. We love using them as an alternative to roasted nuts or chocolate chips. We also enjoy spicing up savory dishes with nibs — try using nibs to crust a duck or lamb for your next dinner party! • Droste Cocoa: Longing for something sweet and delectable that you can sip on in front of a warm fire? Droste Cocoa is sure to satisfy that craving! This Dutch processed cocoa has been treated with an alkali solution that increases the PH level to around an 8 (chocolate’s natural PH is a 5). This process gives the cocoa a darker look and a milder, more chocolaty flavor. • Valrhona Chocolate: Valrhona has been a crowd pleaser for almost a century, providing the finest chocolate to bakers, chocolatiers and chocolate lovers all around the world! This world-renowned French chocolate producer does everything from sourcing and roasting the beans to turning them into chocolate! POPPING UP IN OUR BAKERIES Tammy Cambell (Coffee & Juice Bar) Looking for two bites of heaven — on a stick? Try our cake pops! They’re delicious, adorable and available in either white or chocolate cake varieties, both covered in dipping chocolate. They’re the perfect little treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. NUGGET GOES RED FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION Jennifer Dowden (Community Relations) FUN FACT ABOUT THE COCO-BEAN Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) Do you know that 3 million tons of cocoa are produced annually? Regions all over the world that neighbor the equator grow cocoa, but as much as 70 percent of the world’s cocoa crop comes from West Africa. Nugget Markets is a major supporter of the AHA's Go Red events and programs in 2012. We're kicking off our participation on February 18th with the Go Red Race at Sacramento's William Land Park (stop by the Nugget booth for post race snacks and goodies) and we're the proud Table Wine Sponsor of the 22nd Annual Heart Ball Gala fundraiser on March 17th. At the Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 4th, Nugget is donating delicious chocolates (known to have heart-healthy benefits!) as the luncheon's official Chocolate Sponsor. We're thrilled to partner with the AHA in keeping with our commitment to heart health for everyone! www.goredforwomen.org. HOW CHOCOLATE IS MADE Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) CHOCOLAIS Hank Beal (Adult Beverage) Have you ever looked at a cacoa pod and wondered how it can turn into the delectable chocolate bar or scrumptious cup of hot chocolate you love so much? Making quality chocolate is truly an art that must be mastered, and each chocolatier has his or her own special technique! Here is the skinny on how chocolate is produced: • Manufacturers start the process by roasting raw cocoa pods. Roasting the whole bean, before shelling down to the nib (inside of the pod), will result in a deep roast range and intense flavor. But the nib itself can also be roasted. This results in a more even roast and flavor profile. • Roasted nibs are milled into a brown paste called cocoa liquor. Cocoa liquor can be further pressed to create cocoa butter. • Combining and then churning cocoa butter, cocoa liquor and sugar for anywhere from a few hours to a handful of days is the final step to making liquid chocolate, which is then dried. A key step that differentiates the quality of chocolate is the length of time that chocolate is agitated. The longer chocolate is churned, the smoother and more sophisticated the chocolate will taste! GIOVANNI HOT CHOCOLATE BODY SCRUB Lorna Parton (Healthy Living) This scrub is delicious on so many levels! It smells like brownies, exfoliates the skin with crushed cocoa seeds and softens with sugar. The fact that it actually heats up as you massage it into your skin just makes it that much more crave-worthy! ANDALOU AVO COCOA SKIN FOOD MASK Lorna Parton (Healthy Living) Combine pure cocoa with avocado, Vitamin E and a whole bunch of other nourishing ingredients and you get this soothing mask. It smells just like chocolate pudding, but this treat is for your face to give you soft, smooth skin! The wine industry is currently going crazy over sweet wines in general, and chocolate wines in particular. How can you go wrong with this combo? The chocolate-flavored wines fall into two camps. One is a wine that has the chocolate flavor, but maintains the consistency of a red wine. The other is more of a cream base, with a wine and chocolate flavor. In the latter category we offer Chocolais. If you like milk chocolate, you have to try this wine! OUR HEART CAKE OVERFLOWETH Tammy Cambell (Coffee & Juice Bar) Love on the chocolate-lover in your life with our heart-shaped Chocolate Overflow cake, featuring four different chocolates: chocolate cake, fudge filling, chocolate buttercream icing and chocolate ganache. Order this one special for your sweetie (with 24-hours’ notice, please!). BOTRAN RUM RESERVA BELLY UP TO THE (COFFEE) BAR Hank Beal (Adult Beverage) Tammy Cambell (Coffee & Juice Bar) The Botran family has been making rum in Guatemala for six decades. This Reserva won a Gold Medal at the Ministry of Rum's 2010 tasting competition. It is a blend of rums aged 5 to 14 years using the same multi-barrel aging process as their Solera. We’ve got you covered when it comes to providing healthier, post-holiday drink options in our Nugget coffee bars. All our mixed coffee drinks are available with sugar-free and fat-free options, and we always feature fresh fruit and veggie drinks (five of which are made with fresh fruits and vegetables that are delivered daily). Want to create your own fresh fruit and veggie drink? It’s our pleasure to make that for you, too. This rum has a very sweet aroma with lots of dried apricot and vanilla, plus a hint of baking spice. These are all echoed in the taste, with additional flavors of vanilla, banana and caramel. An oak finish lingers on the tongue. This impressive, well-balanced rum packs tons of character for a great bargain. BAMBOO = SERIOUS VALUE! Josh Dwinell (GM/HABA) OLD-SCHOOL ICE Did you know that bamboo is not a wood? It’s actually a grass that can grow as much as 3 feet per day! Able to naturally replenish itself, bamboo requires no replanting and is one of the most renewable resources known. That’s why we love the renewable kitchen products by pioneering company Totally Bamboo. They use a species of bamboo called Moso timber bamboo, which is sixteen percent harder than maple, to create their affordable products. Daniel Williams (Dairy & Frozen) Vintage style is what’s in right now, so if you want to get hip, then serve your drinks the vintage way. Vintage Ice brings us old-school, large ice cubes — the way ice used to be made. These vintage cubes look great in a glass with your favorite cocktail or soda. DON’T FORGET THE CLASSICS Kaelynn Medbery (Specialty Cheese) As a cheese buyer, I’ve tasted a lot of amazing cheeses, yet more often than not it’s the classics that really pique my interest. I mean, think about it: new cheese makers pop up every day hoping to make the best cheese ever, yet still the classics remain. To me, Stilton is one such cheese. It’s by far the most buttery of the blues, yet it crumbles well and has a unique umami quality that begs for another taste. It tastes fantastic in a rich soufflé, melted over steaks or with lighter fare, crumbled in salads. By far my favorite way to serve Stilton is with a loaf of rustic bread, a glass of port and a piece of dark chocolate. It just so happens that we are right in the middle of Stilton’s peak season, so do yourself a favor and sample a wedge of this wonderful cheese. GO GRASS FED! Angel Nolasco (Meat & Seafood) Grass-fed beef has been gaining in popularity in the past few years, and for good reason: This beef represents a powerful protein that has the important nutrients to fuel your healthy lifestyle. Locally grown SunFed Organic Grass Fed Beef offers omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and is a good source of Vitamin B12 — a critical nutrient not readily available from plant proteins. The SunFed ranching families have been part of California’s ranching heritage for more than 100 years. They respect the sun, the grass and the sustainable cycle of life. Other great attributes of this grass-fed beef include: • 100 percent organic • Never administered growth enhancing hormones or antibiotics • All-vegetarian diet • Born and raised locally • Humanely treated with respect and compassion • Free range • Predominantly Angus bred cattle FISHWISE HELPS OUR GUESTS MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS Angel Nolasco (Meat & Seafood) At Nugget Markets, we’re proud to offer some of the finest restaurant-quality seafood available. And in addition to our quality, one thing that sets our seafood department apart is our use of the FishWise labeling program, which allows our guests to select seafood based on sustainability. The FishWise color-coded signs make it easy to understand what types of fish are sustainable. Green signs on our fish are considered sustainable, while Yellow signs indicate good choices that have some concerns, and Red signs mean that the item may be over fished or fished not using a sustainable method. Our stores offer a large variety of fresh fish fillets, including farmed salmon, mahi-mahi, ahi tuna, Pacific snapper and halibut fillets. We carry wild salmon year round; fresh wild salmon during wild salmon season and quality previously-frozen wild salmon for the off season. Our friendly seafood department associates are happy to help you select the best seafood item for you. ORGANIC GIRL SUPER GREENS Adam Bazarnik (Produce) It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … SUPER GREENS! This super-healthy blend of red and green chard, tat soi, arugula and spinach is just the type of food your trainer would recommend — but don’t worry, there are no initiation fees on these greens! In fact, all these greens rank in the top 10 of the most nutrient-rich foods per calorie: you get Beta Carotene and vitamins A, B, C, and K, folate and riboflavin, magnesium, manganese, iron, potassium and chromium, and 7 mg of Lutein per serving. Try them with your favorite vinaigrette — the tat soi has a nice, earthy, savory flavor, and the arugula adds just the right amount of peppery goodness. WHAT EXACTLY IS AN ORGANIC WINE? Hank Beal (Adult Beverage) A lot has been said recently about the rise of organic wines, but quite a bit of confusion remains about what makes a wine “organic.” In fact, there are four separate types of these wines: organic wines, wines made from organically grown grapes, biodynamic wines and wines with no sulfites added. • Organic wines: These wines carry the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic seal, indicating the wine is made from 100 percent organically grown ingredients and has been monitored throughout its entire production process. Just like any organic fruit, these wines have no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers or synthetic chemicals of any kind. The wine can contain only naturally occurring sulfites. Some say “no detectible sulfites” on the label, which means the current testing methods cannot detect any sulfites. Example: Our Daily Red Wine • Wines made with organically grown grapes: This means the wine is made from at least 70 percent organically grown grapes. It may have artificial sulfites added, and it does not carry the USDA organic seal. Example: Bonterra Wines • Biodynamic wines: Based on the precise observation and an attempt at balance of nature, a concept originated by the early 20th-century Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Biodynamic wine is 100 percent organic, and in addition, the grower has gone beyond to try to bring the farming process more closely in tune with nature. They view vineyards as self-sustaining ecosystems and the soil beneath them as a living organism. Sulfites may be used, but in very low amounts. Example: Benziger Wines • The role of sulfites: Sulfites occur naturally in wine during the fermentation process, just as they occur naturally in your body and many foods. In wine production, the addition of sulfites acts as a preservative used to prevent oxidation and bacterial spoilage, stabilizing the wine. A wine made with no sulfites will be more fragile and age sooner. White wines are the most fragile as they do not have tannins, a component in red wines that helps preserve them. There is a very small percentage (less than .5 percent) of the population, especially asthmatics, that is sensitive to excess sulfites. Any wine with more than 10 parts per million is required to state “contains sulfites” on the label. Example: Pacific Redwood COMPART PORK — THE “BLACK ANGUS” OF THE PORK WORLD Angel Nolasco (Meat & Seafood) In our meat departments we are offering a new premium pork, known as Compart Duroc Pork. Duroc is a breed of pig that excels in meat quality, documented in tests performed by the National Pork Producers. Pork is widely known as “the other white meat,” but the Duroc breed yields a dark pink to dark reddish pink, which is the most desirable color to look for when shopping for pork. Darker reddish pork typically will be juicier, more tender and have a higher pH, which is essential for superior eating quality. Offering these great characteristics, Compart has used the phrase “The Black Angus of Pork” for the Duroc pork they breed. As someone who loves eating pork, I must say that this is the most flavorful and tender pork I have ever barbecued. Currently in our store we carry Compart boneless loin chops, bone-in center cut loin chops and individually vacuum-sealed pork tenderloins. Come by our meat departments for these fine-quality meats. BOAR’S HEAD IS BACK! FRESH TO MARKET ROTISSERIE CHICKEN We are happy to welcome back into our delis Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. Boar’s Head has been in business since 1905, and ever since, they have been obsessed with offering people the best quality deli meats on the market. If you like the Fresh to Market chicken from our meat department, you’ll love the Fresh to Market Rotisserie chickens in the deli. These are locally raised, free range, all-natural chickens from Sonoma County. They are fed an all-natural vegetable diet with no animal by-products; they are raised longer and handled humanely, which results in a more flavorful bird. At Nugget, we know how busy families are, so let us provide you with an easy, healthful meal. Grab a rotisserie chicken, one of our green salads and some bakery bread to make a filling lunch for the whole family. Or pair the chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans with pecorino for a comforting dinner. For a twist, try shredding the chicken or mixing it with one of our Nugget Salsas and roll it up into enchiladas. You can feel good about feeding your family a sustainably raised, hormone- and growth-stimulant-free chicken from a local producer. Jeff Clark (Executive Chef) Boar’s Head offers thirty varieties of American Heart Association certified “Heart Healthy” items, which meet or exceed the association’s guidelines for fat and cholesterol intake. These deli meats contain absolutely no fillers, gluten, artificial flavors, colors or trans fats. We are happy to renew our long-standing relationship with the best deli company in the country, and we encourage you to stop by the deli and ask any associate for a sample. Jeff Clark (Executive Chef) MINNEOLA TANGELOS Adam Bazarnik (Produce) Love sweet citrus, but hate the seeds? So do we. That’s why we love California-grown Minneola Tangelos. These began harvesting in the Coachella valley late in December, and they’re a favorite of ours every year. This cross between a grapefruit and tangerine hits its peak of flavor in January. They feature a thin, easy-to-peel skin, sweet juicy flesh, and yes, a near absence of seeds. Their orange-like size also makes them perfect for some Vitamin C-rich juicing. These can be tricky to pick out on the shelf because they look very similar to an orange, except for one special characteristic: look for the bell-shaped citrus with an exaggerated bump where the stem is, and you will have found the Minneola. STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER! Lorna Parton (Healthy Living) It is estimated that the average person contracts more than 50 colds during a lifetime. The cure for the common cold? We’re still looking, but lucky for us we’ve come a long way from the remedies of the Middle Ages, when colds were treated with roasted mice, leeches or hanging a ball of camphor around the neck. Today, the best thing to do if you feel really sick is to take a trip to your doctor’s office. However, for minor sniffles and congestion, there may be some things you can do at home that provide temporary relief. An old-fashioned favorite (of those 21 years of age and older): the hot toddy! It’s ¼ cup whiskey, ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice and ¼ cup honey. You can either put the ingredients straight into a mug and microwave until warmed, or slow-cook them in a saucepan. If your toddy turns out too strong, add ¼ cup boiling water to the mixture. This hot cocktail may temporarily help soothe aches and congestion, and some people feel it helps them get some much-needed sleep. And it tastes good, too! Here’s another home remedy from Aura Cacia that could help relieve stuffy noses and sinus pressure: Drop one or two drops of Peppermint essential oil into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together for a few seconds, close your eyes (don’t forget this part), put your hands to your face and breathe in deep … so good! This is also great to combat that afternoon energy slump, to keep you awake during late-night driving, or as a pre-workout prep. WHISK YOUR TROUBLES AWAY FANTASTIC FIRE-STARTER Josh Dwinell (Housewares) Rey Munoz (Grocery Warehouse) The humble whisk — simple in design, but what would chefs do without it? Evidence of whisk-like tools exists quite far back into history, from a rudimentary bundle of twigs fastened together, to the modern whisk that appeared at the end of the 19th century. Rogue Valley Firewood’s all-natural fatwood fire starter utilizes a phenomenon long known by loggers and other woodsmen going back to the Native Americans. When a pine tree is logged, the roots continue to pump resin to the stump. This resin is very flammable, and it is now highly concentrated in the stump. Years after the initial logging, the stump is removed and cut up into strips that make an ideal fire starter without any need for chemical enhancement. Now this handy tool has taken another leap forward in innovation, with the introduction of the BlenderBottle, a new tool that helps you make short work of all things that need whisking. The BlenderBottle contains the BlenderBall, which does the whisk-work for you — just add your ingredients to the bottle, drop in the ball, cap and shake. Voilá! Perfectly blended every time, and portable so you can use it anywhere you like! VITALE’S PASTA SAUCE Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) Family run and locally based in Placer County, Vitale makes two incredibly yummy pasta sauces – Tomato Basil and Spicy Crushed Pepper – just like homemade from your grandma’s kitchen. These sauces contain extra-virgin olive oil and are made from tomatoes only grown in California. The wood comes from a pine forest in Honduras that is being logged consistent with sustainable forestry practices. No live trees are cut to produce this product. Removing the stumps enhances the health of the forest and makes replanting easier. MARCY’S GOURMET CRISPS Stephanie Stille (Specialty Grocery) Ever taken a bite of something that instantly caused you to stop what you were doing to immediately savor the flavor explosion? Well, that’s what happens when you try Marcy’s Gourmet Crisps, freshly baked with Calabrese bread and natural ingredients. Even the humble Sea Salt & Pepper crisps are packed with flavor. Only one or two sticks are needed to generate a fire, which makes Rogue Valley’s fatwood an extremely good value compared to traditional, chemical-laced products and/or kindling. When lit, the fatwood emits a pleasant pine odor and is ideal for lighting campfires and barbecues, as well as woodstoves and fireplaces. WE’RE MAKING SHOPPING EASIER THAN EVER!
