HSV ID5 Homework Date Due: Wednesday 11th November 2015 Focus: IPC Making New Materials L.O.: I can investigate the melting of different materials In the previous activity, the children have explored what happens when a solid is added to a liquid (Dissolving). Now we would like to ask them to look at the effects of heat on a solid, i.e. melting. Parent Supervision Required! For this investigation, the children will need: • Same size pieces of: chocolate, butter, ice • Small foil cups (You can make this from foil) • Bowl of warm water • Timer • Thermometer Questions to Answer: 1. Which solid will melt the fastest? Make a prediction before you find out the results. 2. Place each solid in a separate foil cup and float on the warm water. Observe and record what happens. 3. Measure the temperature of the water. 4. Measure the time it takes for each solid to melt. 5. What will happen next? Are the changes permanent? 6. How can you turn them back to a solid? The children should observe what happens to each solid and take measurements and photographs/videos, and make notes and drawings of the changes. They should know that ‘melting’ is when a solid turns into a liquid. Did each solid melt at the same rate? Did each solid turn into a liquid? Were their predictions correct? If not, can they explain why? They should present their results in a scientific way by recording what questions they asked, what they did, what they measured and what physical changes they observed. What happened at the end? Did they get the solid back? Was the change reversible? This week the children have been learning about how to read and use bar graphs. They should read the information below and complete the task! Freyda Erik Astrid Leif The Ericson family have been hunting wild boars. Two horns on your helmets? You’re not real Vikings! The table shows the number they each caught in the last month. Name Freyda Erik Astrid Leif Number of boars 9 17 13 10 1. Draw a bar chart in your book to show this information. Now 2. 3. 4. 5. answer the following questions in your book. Who caught the most boars? How many more than Leif did Erik catch? Who caught the least number of boars? How many more will Freyda need to catch so she has the same number as Erik? 6. How many boars were caught altogether? 7. What fraction of boars did Freyda catch? 8. Write your own question based on the results, and write the answer. Spelling Homework L.O.: I am able to identify and spell homophones. This week the children have begun learning about homophones – words that sound the same but are spelt differently. The children should complete this homework in their literacy homework books. For each word, the children should: Practice writing the word – if unsure of the meaning, they should use a dictionary to check the meaning. They should use the following strategy: o Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check. Write a sentence using the word correctly – remember VCOP! Also write the meaning of the word, looking up the definition in a dictionary or use the internet and record this as well in your jotters. Practise spelling their words through the week for our test on Wednesday!
