CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY NEWSLETTER PDHPE TERM 2, 2012 News from the PDHPE Faculty PDHPE Welcome to our newsletter! Our PDHPE Faculty have had an extremely busy start to the year. Our term 2 newsletter reports on our proudest achievements from semester one! Our students are well underway with their PDHPE studies this year! Year 7-10 have studied various units, both practical and theoretical and our senior students are working hard in PDHPE, CAFS and SLR. Some highlights so far include our Year 11 camp to Yarramundi, Year 11 Crossroads camp to Narrabeen and MADD night where our Dancers performed their 2012 pieces. A reminder to parents and students of year 10, 11 and 12 to read over our CGHS Assessment Policy for 2012, and to read carefully our policy relating to illness/ misadventure applications. Our Faculty Ms Amy Harriman– Head Teacher and Whole School Sport Coordinator Ms Amy Harriman joins our faculty as newly appointed Head Teacher, as well as Mr Bill Gavathas– our new Head Teacher Admin and member of the PDHPE Faculty. We said a sad farewell to Mrs Larcombe at the end of term one. We wish her and her family all the best wishes as they head off to sunny QLD! Each went off with a bang! The students in the Sports Council and PASS classes played an integral role at each carnival assisting with various duties including marshalling, time keeping, runners and encouraging participation from other student. The cost of the venue for each carnival was generously paid for by the P & C. We thank them for their support of our school carnivals. Below is a summary of the results from each carnival. Bronte Aiken competed in the Champion of the Zone event. Bronte Aiken was 14 years age champion and Keara Carbonell was 12 years age champion. Cheltenham placed second behind Riverside in the overall point score. This is the best overall result we have had in a number of years. From zone 17 girls were selected to represent the zone at the regional carnival. Keara Carbonell was 12 years age champion. North West Metropolitan Girls' Zone was placed first in the girls zone point score and Cheltenham Girls' was placed third in the girls schools point score. The following students were selected to represent Sydney North at CHS Swimming: Kathryn Ramsay, Emilie Glasson, Keara Carbonell, Alicia Fornito, Kelsey Hocking, Ashleigh Thomson, Stephanie Harris, Anna Lee, Ellie Jongma, Lucy Jongma, Bronte Aiken and Jessica Teasdale. At CHS Keara won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke. She was also part of the all age relay team with Ellie, Bronte, Jessica, Kathryn and Emilie who won a gold medal. This team went on to compete at NSW All Schools. Against some strong opposition they were placed 6th at All Schools. 2 CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY NEWSLETTER PDHPE TERM 2, 2012 News from the PDHPE Faculty Zone Athletics Cheltenham once again represented at the Zone Athletics carnival on June 6th. A team of over 60 girls represented the school at Zone Athletics at Homebush. Emma Veevers and Isabella Hemming competed in the Champion of the Zone event. Amy Court was 12 years age champion and Kathryn Ramsay was 16 years age champion. Cheltenham placed third behind Riverside and Asquith in the overall point score. Thanks to the Year 9 PASS classes who acted as officials on the day. A number of girls have been selected to represent the North West Metropolitan Girls’ Zone at the regional carnival in July. Miss Wade does a tremendous amount of work organising carnivals. I would like to especially thank Miss Wade and our PDHPE Faculty for their wonderful work organizing these events. Our CGHS Zone Swim Team for 2012. CGHS Zone Athletics Team for 2012. Zone Cross Country 60 students represented the school at the Zone Cross Country Carnival at Macquarie University Sports Fields. Cheltenham was placed second in the overall point score. 15 students have been selected to represent North West Metropolitan Girls' Zone at the regional carnival in Gosford this week. 3 CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY NEWSLETTER PDHPE TERM 2, 2012 CGHS Representatives A number of girls have been selected in other representative sporting teams this year. Kiara Farquhar- Football Lauren Stephenson-Netball Nicola Maitland- Softball Kate Rowlison- Softball Emily Read- Softball Kaitlin Christmas- Tennis Claire Mackay- Tennis As a result of their performance at the CHS softball carnival, Nicola Maitland was selected as captain of the CHS blue team and Emily Read was selected in the CHS red team to compete at NSW All Schools. Following this, Nicola was selected in the NSW All Schools team for the second consecutive year. At the start of May this team played at The Australian All Schools Championships in Canberra where she scored the winning runs for her team in the final. Subsequently she has been selected in the Australian Schoolgirls Team to compete in the International Series in Blacktown in May. Well done, Nicola on these fantastic achievements! Congratulations also to Lauren Stephenson on being selected in the Open Sydney North Netball team. She was one of ten to be selected out of 50 students! From this team she has now been selected for the Combined High School Netball team to represent NSW. This is an outstanding achievement! Knockout Sport 2012 A number of Knockout competitions have commenced. Competition has finished for the open waterpolo, basketball and touch football teams. Competition continues for the hockey, football, netball, softball and tennis teams. The waterpolo team again entered the Barker invitation waterpolo competition. This team played each Tuesday night in Term 1 and had mixed results. Open Touch Knockout 2012 The Open Touch team played against Carlingford High School in a Round 1 match on Monday 20 th February. Cheltenham came out firing, showing their skill and strength in offence. We lead the game in the first half. The second half was extremely close with the scoreboard showing 4 all with 3minutes to go. We all thought a drop off in extra time would be played. Unfortunately Carlingford scored a try with 30 seconds to go on the clock. The score board showing Carlingford 5, Cheltenham 4. It was a disappointing finish, however, the girls played a competitive match. Congratulations to Fran Looby, Tessa Hillig and Lauren Stephenson who all scored tries. After proceeding straight through to Round 3, Cheltenham was more than ready to get on the court! We started off really strong and with the great shooting, defence and mid-court skills we were feeling confident. We managed to hold our own despite some injuries and concluded the game with a win against Henry Kendall 42-17. Thank you to Colette Teirney and Linda Talty who drove the team and supported us on the day, and to Ms McLachlan our coach. It was a tight game and all students truely showed the Cheltenham spirit. Well done to the KO Open Netball team. A big Thank you to Dannni Rosenberg who umpired both Round 3 and 4 and to Maddison Steele who umpired round 3. Tennis The Open Girls' Tennis Team, represented by Kaitlin Christmas (11), Claire Mackay (10), Sofie Inwood (10) and Stefanie Aisbett (8), has now reached the Sydney North semi finals of the CHS Knockout Competition. The team defeated Riverside Girls, Henry Kendall and Cherrybrook High Schools in earlier rounds and will now play either Kincumber or Gorokan High Schools. As well as their excellent tennis skills the girls are a cohesive and good-natured group and enjoy spending time with each other. They especially enjoy their visits to Maccas for a healthy lunch after traveling to "away" games! We wish them all the best of luck for their next game. Knockout Softball 2012 The Knockout Softball team competed at the CHS Knockout Final Series in Newcastle on June 5 and 6. This is the fifth consecutive year that the team has made the CHS Finals Series. The team made the final against Westfield Sports High School. In a tough match and bad weather, the team lost 7-6. Congratulations girls! 5 CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY NEWSLETTER PDHPE TERM 2, 2012 Sport Aerobics Team 2012 Our CGHS Aerobics team have been training hard for this year’s competitions. 2012 has brought us a new opportunity to compete at the Schoolaerobics State Championships– a competition that CGHS has historically done very well at! So far this year our fitness team achieved success at the Schoolaerobics State Preliminary Finals in the Secondary Aerobics Division, with a first place ranking and subsequent berth to the NSW State Finals! The girls also won the gold medal at the NSW FISAF Championships. They will now go on to compete at the FISAF National Championships in Adelaide in July. Our 2012 Fitness Team: Kathryn Ramsay, Jessica Du, Priyanka Sinha, Elisa Akdogan, Danielle Jenkins, Stephanie Werner, Isabella Mrljak and Melissa Romer. Congratulations to the girls and Miss Parkinson for all her hard work training the girls and supporting them at these competitions! Good luck in Adelaide! Dance 2012 This year, 3 Dance Ensembles are being directed by Miss Parkinson. Our Year 7 Dance Ensemble, CGHS Dance Ensemble and our CGHS Dance Company have all been successful in their audition for the Sydney North Regional Dance Festival to be held at Glen St Theatre, Belrose in Week 9 of this term. Ticket information will be available from next week to parents. Congratulations to all dancers on their wonderful performance at our MADD Concert night on Wednesday 30th May. 6 CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY NEWSLETTER PDHPE TERM 2, 2012 Sydney Swans Visit On Tuesday February 14, members of the Sydney Swans visited Cheltenham Girls High School as part of their ‘Community Camps’ program. One of the AFL’s key objectives this year is to promote Youth Girls football. Year 9 students each participate in a term of AFL. The players spoke to the girls about AFL and professional sport and also ran them through a number of skills and at the end of the session they signed autographs. The girls all had a great time.
