th
Welcome to 7 grade Honors English/Literature
Your fist assignment will be to complete a summer novel reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor
along with Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. In addition to reading the novels, you will be
responsible for completing the following assignments. You will also be tested on the novels the
first week that school resumes.
Your assignment includes ALL of the following
Assignment 1

Complete a Vocabulary Reference Guide, which includes at least 5 words that you do
not know from each chapter. Write the vocabulary word, the chapter and page number
where you found the word. You will then write a dictionary definition for each vocabulary
entry along with an original sentence that illustrates your ability to use the word properly.
Each sentence must be a minimum of eight (8) words

example : if the word is ravenous, your sentence can not be: He is ravenous. This
does not illustrate that you know what the word means. A more appropriate sentence
would be: After not eating for three days, the dog was ravenous and attacked the
food greedily.
Assignment 2

Complete all of the attached chapter questions.

All of the answers must be in complete sentences and grammatically correct with no
misspelled words. All answers must be in a complete sentence and fully answer the
question that is asked.

Format:

The assignments must be typed.

A typed assignment must be in an easily read 12-point font.

Staple your work together with a typed cover sheet as the first page. Place your name,
the title of the course, the name of the novel and author, and the date on the cover
sheet.

A copy of the parent letter signed by you and your parent/guardian with the date it was
signed should be the last page of the assignment
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Your child has met the qualifications to participate in Honors English/Literature 20162017 school year. This will prepare your child to take English I in the 8th grade. The philosophy
of placing English I in the eighth grade is to allow students to complete the high school English
requirements by the eleventh grade and have the opportunity to earn college credits in their
senior year. Being enrolled in an honor’s class is a privilege, and students should be
encouraged to hold themselves to a higher standard in academics as well as behavior.
A prerequisite for this course is the completion of a summer reading assignments for the
novels, The Cay by Theodore Taylor along with Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. In addition to
reading the novels, the student will complete a vocabulary notebook and complete chapter
assignments. The assignments are due on the first day of school. The students will also be
tested on the novel within the first two weeks of school. Anyone who fails to turn this in on time
will lose a letter grade each day that it is late. Anyone who does not turn it in will receive a 0,
and I will request they be removed from honors.
Please encourage your child to complete this
in a timely manner and not wait until the last minute to throw it all together. Anyone who
plagiarizes will receive the discipline set up in the student handbook. Please sign and date
below and have your child do the same.
