The Nortel TN-64X
Multiplexer takes the
Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH) world into
the 10 Gbit/s era. Extensive
optical research and demonstrations show that better distances will be achieved at
10 Gbit/s than are typical in
existing STM-16 systems.
Nortel’s TN-64X offers
140 km distance at 10 Gbit/s
over standard Non
Dispersion Shifted Fibre
(NDSF). The TN-64X when
combined with optical amplifiers delivers error free traffic
over several hundred kilometres without the need for
electrical regeneration. The
rapid increase in the demand
for bandwidth has already
created many routes where
multiple STM-16 systems run
in parallel. Nortel’s TN-64X
enables backbone networks to
be built more efficiently than
stacking multiple STM-16 systems on a route.
Nortel’s TN-64X has a large
VC-4 capacity cross connect
built into the shelf. Up to
256 x VC-4s can be cross connected, without blocking and
are implemented on a single
card. An additional switch
card can be fitted for extra
protection if required. This
high level of integration enables efficient management of
traffic and thus 20 Gbit/s of
traffic can be Add/Dropped
via the tributaries.
Nortel’s TN-64X supports
STM-1, STM-4 and STM-16
tributaries. The main shelf
with the 10 Gbit/s high speed
optics contains up to 8 STM16 tributaries or up to 20
STM-1 or STM-4 tributaries.
Below the main shelf a tributary extension shelf is optionally fitted which can contain a
further 20 STM-1 or STM-4
tributaries. In this same position a variety of PDH tributaries can also be located e.g.
34 Mbit/s, 140 Mbit/s.

option for major transmission
networks.
The alternative to 10 Gbit/s on
the TN-64X is to utilise
WDM. Nortel already offers a
WDM option on the TN-16X.
In many situations WDM is
an effective solution. However
this approach cannot on it’s
own meet the large increases
in bandwidth requirements.
Thus STM-64 (and WDM at
STM-64) is the only realistic
Moreover, the integrated VC4
cross connect switch of
Nortel’s TN-64X also allows
traffic to be managed effectively within a network without having to take all the traffic through a Cross Connect.
An alternative approach to increasing network capacity is to
install a 10 Gbit/s express
route between major switch
locations, while con-tinuing to
operate an STM-16 ring for traffic collection from non-switch
sites. Nortel’s TN-64X offers a
linear 1+1 (or 1:1) configuration.
In time, as traffic increases at
the other sites, the linear configuration can be upgraded inservice to a Shared Protection
Ring (SPRing) system.

Why SDH from ABB
1KHA - 000 570 - SEN
The availability of fibre bandwidth is constraining the business growth of many networks. Moving up in speed to
STM-64 is the obvious solution for many networks. In this
application example a route
has two STM-16 systems currently in operation but already
this capacity is insufficient.
Nortel’s TN-64X allows both
existing STM-16 systems to be
plugged into it’s STM-64 capacity via STM-16 tributaries.
This frees up two fibres for reuse and provides an immediate traffic growth capability to
10 Gbit/s. The TN-64X also
has STM-1 and STM-4 tributaries available for transferring traffic from Cross
Connects (DXC) or from
