Dear Parents and Caregivers
Learning a musical instrument is a wonderful, enjoyable, rewarding experience. If you would like
your child to learn one of the following instruments at school, please complete the form below and
return it to the front office as soon as possible. Numbers are limited and therefore continuing students
are given preference over new students. We would love to see more students playing clarinet, viola,
flute or other brass and woodwind instruments. If we have enough interest in other instruments we
will seek our other teachers.
Most lessons will be on Thursdays. Continuing students start on this week and new students will be
starting next week.. Lessons are usually 30 minutes unless indicated below as 20 minutes duration.
They may be private (individual) or group lessons. Our instrumental music teachers and lesson costs

Barb Williams will be conducting the school concert band. We want to try a different approach to
band this year. We are hoping that during the term all instrumental music students will have a go at
learning the same one or two songs. The concert band will form in week 7 of each term and this large
band will rehearse together for an end of term performance. The school covers all costs of band
tuition and sheet music. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to play together, build their skills
and enjoyment and perform.
Paul Henson mentors our rock band; a small number of experienced music students. The school
covers all costs of the rock band sessions. This year there will be two rock bands. The rock band will
commence with auditions on Thursday 21 February at 3:30 pm in the arts room. Those interested
should come along to this first session. From time to time auditions will be held for places in the rock
bands as they become available.
The Education Department is funding instrumental lessons and a band for our local cluster of schools.
These sessions are now based at Hallett Cove School. At this stage we are still awaiting information
about dates and times. There are limited places for each instrument, ultimately determined by the

composition of the band. There is a combination of instrumental group lessons and band, over the
course of each term. We have 3 students who have been successful in being selected for this great
opportunity. We will let you know as vacancies arise in this program.
Again this year parents will pay teachers direct, not through the school. Parents will receive invoices
from the instrumental music teachers for this term’s music lessons once places are allocated. We will
still oversee the program and liaise closely with the instrumental music teachers to ensure a quality
program is provided.
Hire or Buy?
It usually works out cheaper to buy a musical instrument than to hire it. There are always buyers if
you need to sell a good quality instrument later! However, if you do wish to hire the instrument
Mountford Music (phone 85554152) or Size Music (ph: 83733370) offer good prices. A refundable
deposit will be required in addition to hire costs for most instruments. You can also buy new and
second hand instruments through Size, Mountford, Musicorp, Presto or privately. Up to half of what
you have paid in hire costs may come off the purchase price of your child’s instrument if you choose
to buy it later.
The school owns an Alto Saxophone which we are happy to hire out for a small fee. We are also
happy to help families who are struggling to meet costs by exploring the possibility of the school
hiring, at a reduced rate (see Size Music website: size.com.au), which we could then pass on to you.
We may be able to help in the same way, students who wish to hire clarinet or big brass instruments.
Please talk to me if you have any questions about your child learning an instrument.
Return of the slip below is required for new students only. Please return it as soon as possible.
Instrumental music teachers have already given me the names of students who they believe are
continuing with them; if in doubt or any details have changed then complete the form.
We hope to hear more beautiful music from our talented students this year.
