MANAGING
DIRECTOR
It has been a very exciting and busy period since our last edition of Cold Scoop.
Our Laverton site expansion is complete and is now operational. This has been
a tremendous effort from everyone involved. The site was officially opened on
22 October, when we recognised the team’s efforts.
Our project to deploy the Accellos
warehouse management system,
Project Ice Breaker, has been launched
at Laverton in addition to earlier launches
at Clayton and Lurnea. A big thank you to
the Ice Breaker team, our employees and
our customers for their understanding
and support as we bed down the
new system. We expect to realise the
significant efficiencies and standardisation
benefits the Accellos system provides
as our employees adjust to the new
processes and disciplines and as we
deploy the system across our network
in 2015.
We have completed a significant upgrade
of our Banjup facility in Western Australia,
which looks fantastic and has had great
feedback from our new customer,
Martin-Brower.
We have had a number of changes
to our leadership team: we welcome
Darren Wedding to the role of General
Manager Operations, while Finance
Director Paul Gold has transferred to our
sister company HSE. We wish Paul and
his family every success in his new role
and trust they enjoy their new home in
Perth. We also welcome Daryl Roe who is
joining us from our other sister company
2
Kalari. Daryl will be working closely with
me and the leadership team in his new
role as Chief Financial Officer.
In July, we purchased a large tract of
land in Marsden Park, in Sydney’s north
west. We plan to open a state-of-the-art
temperature-controlled warehouse and
distribution centre in 2016. This site will
allow us to meet our customers’ current
and future needs and strengthen our
position in the New South Wales market.
Since the last edition of Cold Scoop, we
have continued to hold briefing sessions
and focus groups across the business
to further explore the Engagement and
Alignment Survey results and to advise
our plans to address employee feedback.
Employee wellness and development
training as part of our safety strategy has
continued. The feedback from our South
Australia and New South Wales teams has
been very positive.
We have also commenced a safety and
leadership coaching programme led
by DuPont within our South Australian
operation. Alan Gotts, National Safety &
Sustainability Manager, our team of safety
advisors and members of the leadership
team attended to ensure we can leverage

NATIONAL SAFETY CONFERENCE
National Safety Conference was held during July and was attended and supported
by the leadership team, state and site managers and a representation of health and
safety representatives from all states.
The forum provided the opportunity to
review our important safety programme
which forms part of our commitment to
safety and our employees.
and assist all employees to be more
engaged in safety across our business.
I urge you to take responsibility for your
personal health and safety and that of
your colleagues. If you are unsure STOP
and ASK. If you see a hazard or unsafe
act, report it, don’t walk past.
Together, we can achieve the goal
of a safe, zero harm workplace.
I would also like to thank you for
your hard work, your commitment to
your colleagues and to a safe work
environment over the past year. I wish
you and your families a happy and safe
festive season and I look forward to us
continuing to build a great place to work
in 2015.
Stay Safe,
Shane Moloughney
Managing Director
The conference was opened by Greg
Hughes, John Swire & Sons Pty Ltd
Chief Operating Officer, who emphasised
Swire’s commitment to safety. The
conference also provided an opportunity
for us to hear from Chris Harrison
and Amanda Benson from our sister
companies Kalari and Alex Fraser, both
of whom gave an overview of their
relative safety journeys and safety
leadership programmes. During the
conference the National Safety Comes
First champion was announced and
the award went to Craig Matthews,
Clayton Site Manager. Craig’s prize was
a registration to attend the Refrigerated
Warehouse and Transport Association’s
(RWTA) annual conference in Cairns in
August. Congratulations, Craig!
HSSE COORDINATOR’S WORKSHOP
State HSSE coordinators
met in Melbourne during
September to discuss
various items, including
finalisation of new
procedures, generation
of 2015 site-specific
safety plans, and a
progress update on the
four-pillar safety strategy.
The workshop concluded
with a site tour of the
new Laverton expansion.

Laverton expansion
All staff have participated in these
sessions, with staff saying they have
been really valuable and noticeably
changing their behaviour. Staff have
stopped drinking energy drinks and
are participating in the morning warm
ups prior to starting their shifts.
The first two modules of the Health
and Wellness programme in New South
Wales have also been very successful.
Staff are drinking more water and have
asked for healthier options in the vending
machines, while we have also seen
less unhealthy takeaway food being
consumed at work.
Queensland is the next state to take
part in the programme, commencing
in January 2015.

SAFETY MONTH 2014
Safe Work Australia Safety Month
was held around Australia throughout
October to encourage people to get
involved in and concentrate on safety
in their workplace to reduce death,
injury and disease.
This year’s theme was Work safe,
Home safe which reminds us that
the most important reason for making
our workplace safe is not at work
at all. All sites ran activities such as
‘Safety Scrabble’, ‘Hunt the Hazard’,
‘Fluoro Friday’ and children’s colouring
competitions.

DUPONT TRAINING AT DRY CREEK
The importance of safety has been reinforced through the attendance of our General
Manager Operations, General Manager People and Culture, National Safety and
Sustainability Manager, Manager South Australia and our state HSSE Managers
at a three-day DuPont Safety Leadership Fundamentals Workshop held at Dry Creek.
DuPont is widely regarded as the
world leader in safety and this course
presented a great opportunity to learn
from the best.
The course included a number of very
interesting approaches which we will seek
to adopt across the Swire Cold Storage
business over the coming months. Two
key approaches taught were safety
action meetings and safety observations.
The safety observation is similar to our
‘Walk the Talk’, however, it is enhanced
by more active engagement with staff
on the shop floor. The idea is to more
actively engage with our staff and seek
to modify unsafe behaviours as they are
observed. Ultimately this builds a working
environment in which we all act safely
and look out for each other’s welfare
rather than being driven by compliance.
Our instructor, Peter Keating, encouraged
our involvement throughout the course
with regular discussion and role playing.
Participants also had the opportunity to
practice the skills learnt and conducted
safety observations within the Dry Creek
operations.
The most important point reinforced
by DuPont is that safety is everyone’s
responsibility and that within our business
it is the operational or line management
that must lead safety, with the support
and advice from our HSSE Managers.
This workshop taught us all about bestin-class safety and the learnings from this
training will be more broadly rolled out
across the business in coming months.
QUEENSLAND TRANSPORT INDUSTRY SHARES SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
The Transport Safety Showcase 2014
was held on 21 October. The event,
hosted by Workplace Health and Safety
Queensland and Toll NQX, is an annual
forum for the transport industry to
showcase what its done to improve the
safety of its workers through low cost,
high impact safety initiatives, particularly
in the areas of load restraint, vehicle
immobilisation, portable driver exclusion
and fall prevention.
The 2014 Chain of Responsibility (CoR) audit programme is in full swing. Full audits
have been conducted at Welshpool, Clayton, Lyndhurst, Laverton and Dry Creek.
While results have demonstrated solid progress, it’s important that everyone takes
responsibility for safety.

1. Maxi
brake alarm – activates alarm if door is opened prior
to setting the brake
2.Immobilisation lock – ensures that trailer brakes cannot
be released during loading
3. Trailer connections accessible from ground level – eliminates
the risk of falls by allowing all connections to be completed
without climbing onto truck
Driver safety representatives Peter
Thomson and Reid Gillman and
Queensland State Manager Ken Saxen
attended on behalf of Swire Cold
Storage to showcase our recent
truck safety initiatives.
4.Anti-slip prime mover steps – provides sure footing
for drivers entering and exiting prime mover
5. Three point contact trailer entry – minimises the risk of falls when
accessing the internal area of the trailer with three points of contact,
anti-slip steps and small landing at top of steps
New South Wales State Manager Dean
Thorpe also attended, and experienced
the truck roll-over simulation.
Industry attendees included drivers, safety
and depot managers, and health and
safety representatives from Queensland,
New South Wales and Victoria.
COR AUDITS UNDERWAY
Swire Cold Storage provided one truck and trailer for the 2014
Showcase. Highlighted on or around this equipment were eight
safety initiatives designed to improve safety:
Nearly 600 people from the industry
attended, up from the nearly 400 people
who attended last year’s inaugural event.
Last year Swire Cold Storage showcased
a number of initiatives, including its LED
trailer coupling initiative, which has been
readily taken up by others in the industry.
Peter Thomson, Ken Saxen and Reid Gillman (left to right)
Queensland State Manager Ken Saxen
said: “The forum is about learning from
each other to make the industry safer.
Most of these safer solutions, like what
we had on our truck, are not something
you could buy or see in a catalogue –
it’s sharing small initiatives that added
together make a big impact.”
6.High intensity turntable connection light – allows drivers to easily check
the trailer connection at any time. It overcomes the challenges with depth
perception faced when inspecting trailer connections in varying ambient
light levels with a handheld torch which has resulted in instances where
trailers are believed to be properly connected but the king pin is sitting
on the locking pin rather than behind
7. Electric
pallet mover – lightweight device that assists drivers to safely
handle pallets when loading or unloading at sites without fixed docks.
Conventional pallet movers are too large and heavy to safely use in the
back of a trailer and themselves create risks of injury e.g. crushing of hands
between device and wall of trailer or crushing of feet
8.Container door restraint strap – allows personnel to check the stability of
a load in a container without the risk of loads collapsing onto the person.

MARTIN-BROWER GOES LIVE AT BANJUP,
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
SWIRE COLD STORAGE HELPS
SIMPLOT TO GET DISH’D UP
Swire Cold Storage recently completed a significant upgrade of Building 2A, which
has been unoccupied in recent years, at the Banjup facility in Western Australia, to
meet the operational requirements of customer Martin-Brower.
Swire Cold Storage has been working closely with our customer Simplot to support the delivery of their new product concept,
dish’d, which was launched in August 2014.
When Martin-Brower signed a long-term
tenancy contract, Swire Cold Storage
undertook the upgrade to meet MartinBrower’s requirements. These included
freezer, chiller and dry goods handling
and storage, a new office, a dry goods
unloading canopy, MHE recharge room,
as well as employee amenities and
a car park.
The fit-out started in early 2014, and
proceeded smoothly thanks to a great
collaboration between Martin-Brower
and Swire Cold Storage personnel.
The truck park and charge facilities were
relocated first to allow the external works
to start.
In parallel, the old internal freezer racking
was removed, and new LED lighting and
a VESDA early warning fire detection
system were installed, as well as insulated
internal walls, a 2,400-pallet satellite
racking plus pallet live and carton
live racking.
A feature of the works is the fit-out of the
old recharge room to a two-storey office
block that gives Martin-Brower the ability
to consolidate its state office.
The works were largely complete by
the end of August, and Martin-Brower
moved its operations during one
weekend in September.
A big thank you to Rob Curran,
Engineering Supervisor WA, who
spent most of his time onsite during
2014 managing the various contractor
works, supported by Tim Sandercock,
Engineering Manager SA/WA, who
managed the key project supplier
contracts.

Our journey has taken us all over the world. We get really excited each
time we discover or develop a new dish. The appearance, the aromas
and the taste… if it doesn’t get us raving, it doesn’t make the cut; or
we know we have to keep working on it. Profiteroles and Tarts from
France, Pasta from Italy, Pad Thai from Thailand… and loads more…
and we’re only just getting started.
For us, it’s all about the quality and taste of the food, and seamless service. At dish’d,
it’s like a quest we have, to repeatedly deliver that moment of delight when you tell
yourself ‘Wow’ or ‘Yum’, when you’ve just discovered another favourite dish. Surprising
and delighting all your senses is what gets us going.
Enjoying great food with friends and family is a joy, and one we want to help you share
often and effortlessly, by providing you delicious meals, ready when you are.

in the areas of safety, operations and
engineering. The group visited our
warehouses in Melbourne, Sydney and

Happy employees are ones who are supported by their team, work in a safe, pleasant
environment and have been trained to do their job well, supported by good business
processes.
And it’s a self-evident truth that happy
employees make customers happy with
excellent service and solutions.
Our Business Improvement function, led
by Mike Davies, is focused on improving
our business processes in safety, quality
and customer service.
We also hosted a delegation from
the Cold Chain Logistics Committee
of China Federation of Logistics and
Purchasing, of which Swire Pacific Cold
Storage is a corporate member and
sits on their advisory committee as a
deputy chairman. Their trip to Australia
was jointly organised with the Victorian
Government for them to meet with
various trade associations in agriculture,
food processing and cold chain industry
to share ideas and processes.
Training was held during September and
October for supervisors and team leaders
nationally in two Lean methodologies,
5S (sort, straighten, standardise, sanitise
and sustain) plus Safety and Value
Stream Mapping (VSM). Both of these
methodologies will help our managers
to improve housekeeping and standardise
processes, making them more efficient
and less stressful for our people, and
thereby providing a safer, more pleasant
and productive work environment.
The delegation undertook a site visit of
our Laverton facility and Polar Fresh in
Melbourne.
Our New South Wales operations
team recently put their training to the
test, holding a two-day workshop at
our Homebush site. They prioritised
three operational processes to review:
immobilisation, order preparation and
picking an order.
The review identified a number of areas
to improve and the team is now testing
and planning implementation.

you’ve ever heard?
“Imagine your son or daughter were
to work here.”
MEET DARYL ROE
CHIEF FINANCIAL
OFFICER
Joel Stanners
Hemmant 3 Storeworker (QLD)
I attend the board meetings and
generally act as the gatekeeper for the
company and to look after the interests
of our shareholders. I also look after
the company’s legal matters, property
transactions and contracts.
What did you do before joining Swire
Cold Storage?
I have always been in supply chain or
logistics. Most recently I worked with
Target. Before that I had five years running
the warehouse and transport operations
across 13 Asia Pacific countries for a
European 3PL. I have also worked for
Nestle, Smorgon Steel (now OneSteel)
and the Royal Australian Air Force. My
roles have ranged from regional sales
manager to explosives instructor.
MEET DARREN WEDDING
GENERAL MANAGER
OPERATIONS
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am happily married to my wife, Michelle,
and have a 20-year-old son and two
daughters, aged 18 and 15. I grew up in
a military family and have lived a fairly
nomadic life. I love running and while
I am not as quick as I used to be, or
would like to be, I regularly participate
in half marathons.
What is the best safety advice
you’ve ever heard?
“You accept the standard you walk past.”
In my first interview with Swire Cold
Storage I sensed that they were very
serious about safety and really care for
their people. Success for us in safety
will be when we move from where our
safety behaviour is largely driven by
conformance to rules, to where our staff
actively engage in safety and look out for
the safety of their team mates because
they want to and because they know it’s
the right thing to do!
What’s the biggest challenge facing
our company today?
Keeping focused on the most important
issues to continue improving our business
so that we maintain our leading position
in an increasingly competitive and
demanding market.
What makes you excited about Swire
Cold Storage?
The people. Everyone I have met has
been extremely welcoming and genuinely
cares about the business. There is a real
sense of pride and a clear desire among
everyone to do a good job. I am excited
to be among a group of people with
that outlook and grateful to have the
opportunity to be a part of it.
What’s the biggest challenge facing
our company today?
Our biggest challenges are still with safety
as we still rely too much on compliance.
The leaders within operations need to
step up more consistently and regularly
and be very visible in engaging with our
staff to come with us on this journey.
Don’t get me wrong, there is some really
great work going on, it’s just not uniform
across all operations.
What makes you excited about
Swire Cold Storage?
I am really excited about the strategic
direction of the business and can’t wait
to share our plans with our staff. The
business is in good shape and we have
a very supportive board. Going forward
will see us build upon the great
foundation we have and leverage
this to become even greater.
What does your role entail?
I am responsible for the national
operations – all the trucks, warehouses
and people who work with them. I need
to ensure we operate safely, meet our
customers’ expectations and deliver the

Congratulations to our

team at Welshpool!
FREEZE FRAME
WINNER!
In our April edition of Cold Scoop, we launched Freeze Frame, a competition
for staff to share their work story through a photo and few words. A huge thank
you to everyone who sent in entries! All of the entries were fantastic and it was
heartwarming to see that for so many of you, your workplace is about your
team and its safety.
We will send posters showcasing entries to our sites, so you can share them
with your team.
The winning entry was a montage of Fluoro Friday photos from the Western Australia
operations team showcasing the change in safety culture that has taken place over
the past 12 months. The prize – an iPad mini – will be donated to a team member
at Welshpool.
The winning entry from the WA operations team said:
“In a nutshell what this workplace means to us: a committed
and dedicated team to gain the best outcome for our
customers and to take pride and deliver quality and excellence
in everything we do today and tomorrow, [and] to do it in the
safest way so we all get to go home to our families
each night.”
Some of the other entries:
A picture speaks a thousand words and when I look at
this picture I see an openly enthusiastic and dedicated
group of people. Their visible team spirit has developed
as the result of a stable work environment, shared
goals and objectives and a genuine respect for other
members of their team.

You think: ‘And?’
Let me tell you my thoughts: Waiting at my
house for me are my wife and my two kids.
We’re going to have some cake and enjoy
the afternoon.
Still nothing special? When I hear about a
workplace accident, I think: ‘Oh no, not
again!’ Recently, a worker was killed by a
truck at a construction site in Kilburn. He
was 20 years old. I just did not know what
to think about his family and friends.
Sometimes I need a sad reminder not
to take everything for granted. Swire Cold
Storage is doing a lot for me and our
safety. Sometimes I think: ‘Are you people
for real? How can I ever finish my job?
You expect too much.’
That makes this photo special for me;
getting into my car on a sunny afternoon
with loved ones waiting for me, and not
lying in an ambulance.
May there be countless Saturdays
like this in the future.
Andreas Bauer, Order Picker, Dry Creek
The results we achieve as a site are not mine alone,
but come as a result of this wonderful group of people
that have formed themselves into the fantastic team we
simply call Hemmant 3.
At Lurnea we are taking the Health and Wellness programme
one step further and providing fruit and vegetable trays for
all employees during October. The fresh produce has been
well received by everyone and there is a new buzz around
leading a healthier lifestyle. We buy the produce in bulk and
a small team of ‘choppers’ prepare the vegies and distribute
to offices and lunch rooms. The fact our senior management
care about our health to meet the cost of this programme
is fantastic! It’s a great initiative to be a part of and we are
hoping to continue into the month of December. So next
time you’re at Lurnea, grab an apple and say G’day.

It makes me proud to watch them quickly offer their
support to each other in the new challenges they
face each day and their willingness to adopt and
then champion each new safety initiative fills me with
admiration.

NEW KALARI MORANBAH DEPOT
OFFICIALLY OPENED
Sister company Kalari officially opened
a new depot in Moranbah, Queensland
on 27 August.
The occasion was celebrated at an official
opening ceremony, attended by a range
of guests and the John Swire & Sons Pty
Ltd board. The commemorative plaque
was unveiled by John Swire & Sons Pty
Ltd Non-executive Director Sam Swire.
Managing Director Peter O’Shannessy and
John Swire & Sons Chairman and CEO
Bill Rothery presented at the event. Bill
expressed his thanks to everyone involved
in the Moranbah business for their hard
work and dedication and shared his view
on future activities in the region: “This is a
good example for the level of investment
and the quality of investment that we
would make for BMA. To all of you, thank
you for getting us to this point, good luck
with the future, and I am sure we will
continue to expand not just the current
contracts, but other contracts.”
The new depot has been built from
the ground up and features innovative
features such as integrated jacks in the
pits, which are equipped with hydraulic
pit barriers that can be raised when not
in use. The depot also has a full-length
wash bay which is connected to two
water tanks and a water recycling system
that filters and reuses drain water up to
four times, minimising water usage.
Kalari provides bulk logistics services
to the mining industry in the region and
the new Moranbah depot is a major
long-term investment. Currently Kalari
occupies less than half of the available
real estate which leaves room for
future expansion. Kalari is dedicated
to maintaining a strong presence in
the region, both as a high-quality
service provider and employer.
This is a good example for the
level of investment and the
quality of investment that
we would make for BMA
