Spontaneous Generation

Are these expressions true or false? Why?
Have you ever heard any of them before?
Nile River floods every year.
Mud becomes rich silt.
Millions of frogs appeared.
People thought "Frogs come from mud."
In the Middle Ages farmers stored grain in wooden buildings.
Buildings had thatched roofs.
Mice got in grain.
People thought "Mice come from grain."
No refrigerators during the Middle Ages.
People bought or traded for food everyday.
Butcher shops hung meat outside.
The customer asked for a slice of meat.
The butcher chased the flies away and cut off a piece.
The customer didn't use the meat right away and it rotted.
Maggots appeared on the rotten meat.
People thought "Flies come from rotten meat."
a logical explanation
of events that happen in
nature. When a theory has
been tested many times it may
be called a law.
The theory that living things can
come from nonliving materials.
Examples: worms from rain, mice
from hay and rags
The theory that living things can
only come from similar living
things.
Examples: humans from humans,
dogs from dogs etc.
Maggots don’t
come from rotten meat. They
come from flies.
*Used Scientific Method
Uncovered jar with
meat inside
Net covered jar
with meat inside
Sealed jar with
meat inside
Maggots found in
uncovered jar
Maggots on
netting but not
the meat
No maggots on
meat or the lid
Microorganisms
come from “air”. Boiling will kill
them.
Broth was placed in flasks that
were open, sealed, and boiled &
sealed . The flasks were set out for
months and then examined with a
microscope.
Microbes were found in the opened
and sealed flasks. No microbes were
found in the boiled, sealed flask. He
believed microbes were killed by boiling.
Air does not
produce microbes. Microbes come
from cells of organisms on dust
particles not from “air”. He believed
microorganisms could be killed by
boiling.
Paris Academy of
Science offered a
reward to anyone who
could clear up the
Spontaneous
Generation controversy.
He poured sugar water
into open flasks with
bent necks, boiled them
and let them sit.
The boiled solution remained clear of
microorganisms for over a year even
though it was exposed to air. The
curved neck trapped living particles
from the air. PASTEURIZATION
created!
Recipe for Bees
1. Kill a bull during the
first thaw of winter.
2. Build a shed.
3. Place the dead bull on
branches and herbs
inside the shed.
4. Wait for summer. The
decaying body of the
bull will produce bees.
