Flamenco Arts Festival embarks on a
dynamic journey with Nómada (Nomad)

SANTA BARBARA, CA July 7, 2014 — The Flamenco Arts Festival returns to The
Granada Theatre on Saturday, September 27 with prominent Spanish artist
Manuel Liñán and the U.S. premiere of his production Nómada (Nomad).
Labeled a genius by his peers, Liñán will take to The Granada stage with his
company for a presentation that seeks to demonstrate how the dynamic
patterns and rhythms of human migration have forever changed the human
landscape. Nómada seeks to explore this powerful phenomenon through the
percussive brilliance and swirling beauty of flamenco, incorporating deeply
rooted traditions with exuberant, modern movement. It is an “immense
unfinished human tapestry that we live in, with infinite possibilities,” one Spanish
critic recently wrote. Join us at the Granada for a thrilling and thoughtprovoking evening for purists and fans of new flamenco alike.
About Manuel Liñán:

Intense, exhilarating, mesmerizing. Manuel Liñán’s performances combine razor-sharp rhythms and
meticulous timing with an air of spontaneity — as if Liñán himself is on a personal exploration. With a
reverence for traditional technique, Liñán is strongly rooted to the classical core of flamenco while at
the same time infusing his gravity-defying performances with a sense of the unexpected, keeping his
audience riveted or roaring with applause.
Born in Granada in 1980, Liñán developed his
dancing skills with Mario Maya and Manolete,
and has performed with Cristina Hoyos, Rafaela
Carrasco, Belen Maya, Merche Esmeralda, and
Cristóbal Reyes, including ten years
collaborating with Marco Flores and Olga Pericet. He has been recognized not only as a
masterful dancer, but also as a choreographer and director, being invited on many
occasions to choreograph for the Spanish National Ballet.
In 2012, he was awarded the
coveted Flamenco Hoy award,
voted on by the leading flamenco critics of Spain, for best male dancer of the year.
In 2013, he won the MAX Award for best male dancer at the XVII annual
presentation, given to Spanish artists in the field of theater and dance.
The Flamenco Arts Festival is especially pleased to bring Manuel Liñán to Santa
Barbara to continue the tradition of showcasing the finest expression of Iberian
culture to be found anywhere on the South Coast, if not the world.

Enhance your concert experience and gain insight into the world of flamenco in this one-hour, preconcert lecture. Designed to engage the audience in a lively and stimulating conversation, artists
and scholars Roberto Amaral (Master Practitioner from Los Angeles) will explore flamenco in
California, while Ricardo López (From Madrid and Tour Manager for Manuel Liñán) will discuss the
production that will be seen that evening.
This event is free to ticket holders, and does not require you to book ahead of time. Arrive early to
secure a seat. A no-host bar will be open for you to enjoy refreshments during this event.

PROJECT FIESTA!
Building a Complete History of Old Spanish Days
In honor of the 90th anniversary of Old Spanish Days, the Santa Barbara Historical
Museum has put together an exquisite exhibition of vintage posters, artwork, restored
costumes, artifacts and historic photos that evoke the exuberant pageantry and
traditions of this cherished festival.

Santa Barbara Dance Arts
Since its inception, the Festival has provided training in flamenco for working
professionals and students. As part of the Festival’s Access to the Arts initiative, the goal
has been to provide accessible and affordable training to adults and children who are
interested in developing their skills and talents by working and interacting with Spanish
artists who are at the height of their artistic careers.
