My Whiskers
My Whiskers

I am a cat. I have long whiskers on my face. My
whiskers are stiff hairs.
I use my whiskers to touch things. They help me feel
my way around.
I also use my whiskers to find my way in the dark. My
whiskers feel the air moving. The air moves around the
couch. I follow the air to walk around the couch.
Thank you, whiskers!

My Whiskers
What are whiskers?
Suggested answer: Whiskers are stiff hairs (on a cat’s face).
B) Draw a cat. Be sure to include its whiskers.
Suggested answer: Students’ pictures may vary but should include a cat with whiskers
on its face. Advanced pictures will show how the cat uses its whiskers. For example, the
cat might be touching something with its whiskers or using them to feel its way around (a
couch) in the dark.

Class Discussion Question: Explain how a cat uses its whiskers to move around in the
dark. Be sure to reference an example from the passage.
Suggested answer: Answers may vary but students should explain that cats can feel the
air moving with their whiskers. Air moves around objects, such as a couch, and the cat
can feel/sense that movement with its whiskers. It follows the air so that it doesn’t run
into anything in the dark.
