Topics Discussed
• ODOT’s new pavement preservation program
• How townships can take advantage of the new changes
• New specification information
• How pavement preservation allows townships to spread
their budget $’s further
Applications Discussed
• Overband Crack Seal---ODOT Spec #423
• Mastic Surface Treatments
• Micro Surfacing---ODOT Spec #421
• Cape Seals---light & heavy uses

Overband Crack Seal
Mastic Surface Treatment
When:
2-4 years after new
pavement is installed
Result:
Additional 5 years
pavement service life
What is it
A sprayed on seal with a unique blend of
aggregate and polymer to help seal your
pavement, arrest oxidation, while
extending the life of asphalt or chip seal
surfaces
Components
• Cationic Polymerized Asphalt Emulsion – CSS-1HM
– Single Cut Emulsion at Central Plant
– .25 gallon /sy @ 10 lbs./gallon = 2.5 lbs./sy
– End result more comparable to Micro than Fog Seal
– Double Application – Both Directions in Each Lane
• Quality “Fine” Aggregate – “Silica Sand”
• Dark Color Enhancers – “Carbon Black”
• Breaking and Setting Additives
Benefits
Applications
-Seals the pavement
State, County and Townships
-Arrests oxidation
•
High-Volume Priority Shoulders
-Maintains good surface

Micro Surfacing – ODOT Spec #421
What is it
• A thin, tough Layer of asphalt
emulsion designed to help seal your
pavement, fill minor rutting, arrest
oxidation, and extend the life of an
asphalt or chip seal surface

Cohesiveness
Micro Surfacing
• Seals the pavement
• Can fill ruts up to 1”
• Arrest Oxidation / Minor Raveling
• Provides a tough wearing surface
• Fast Installation and Cure Time
• ½ the cost of 1 ½” of asphalt
• Improves surface friction

Cape Seal
What is it
• A tough wearing surface that combines a chip seal with a
micro surfacing treatment
• Designed to treat pavements that are structurally sound but
have a higher level of surface distress.
Benefits
• Provides tough, dense
wearing application
Can be placed on a #8 or # 9 Stone
Cape Seal
