About Hope Scarves
When Lara MacGregor was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30, 7 months
pregnant with her second son, a woman she never met, but with whom she shared
a mutual friend, sent her a package. Inside were beautiful scarves she wore during
her battle with cancer and a note saying, “You can do this.” The scarves were both
practical and inspiring. And, knowing someone else had worn the scarves and beat
cancer helped Lara believe she could do it too. Not long after Lara finished treatment
she met Roberta who had just lost her hair from chemo. They laughed together as
Lara showed her the different ways to wear a scarf. When she finished treatment
Roberta sent the scarves back to Lara. Lara had since moved to Louisville and one
of the first friends she met was starting treatment. Lara brought over a scarf to
Brooke‘s house one night and they talked about what it was like to lose your hair with
tears and laughter. This whole time Lara couldn‘t stop thinking about the amazing
journey these scarves were on.
Hope Scarves was created to capture the stories of courageous women and
encourage others by passing along scarves and stories of hope. Cancer survivors
send their scarves and stories to Hope Scarves where each scarf is carefully cleaned
by Highland Cleaners. Then they are sent out by personal request or as gifts from a
loved one, along with the story of the woman who wore it to someone facing cancer. We hope when each woman wraps a Hope
Scarf around her head she feels the strength and determination of the women who wore it before her.
Personal Scarf Requests
An individual can request a scarf at no charge. Each scarf is sent along with the stories of the woman who wore it and our
sincere encouragement. When the person who requested the scarf is ready, she can send the scarf back to Hope Scarves and
add her story. The scarf will be cleaned by Highland Cleaners and continue on its journey to another woman, with the new story.
