February is Black History Month
Today’s notable African American is Rosa
Parks. Rosa Parks was an African
American civil rights activist and “the
Mother of the Freedom Movement.” She
was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee,
Alabama. On December 1, 1955 she
refused to obey bus driver James F. Blake’s
order to give up her seat in the colored
section to a white passenger after the
white section was full. Her action
triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Her legacy includes an autobiography she
wrote entitled Rosa Parks: My Story, and a
scholarship she started for high school
seniors going to college. Rosa Parks died
on October 24, 2005 in Detroit, Michigan
at age 92. There is a street in Detroit and
part of a highway in Los Angeles named
after her.
Barack Obama was the 44th
President of the United
States. He was born on
August 4, 1961 in Honolulu,
Hawaii. His full name is
Barack Hussein Obama. His
childhood nickname was
“Barry.” He has degrees from
Columbia University and
Harvard University. Before he
ran for president, he was a
United States senator for
Illinois.
