It was considered to be the climax, with the winner ranked as "Victor Ludorum". Admiration for the Ancient Pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the Modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin and from 1909 he tried to have the event re-introduced into the Olympic programme. From 1912 to 1980 the Olympic Modern Pentathlon competition was held over five days with one event per day. Between 1984 and 1992, the competition was held over four days. For the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, the competition was a one-day event. In 1998, the UIPM received approval for women to compete in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. At Sydney all Pentathlon venues were 96% sold out. In Athens and Beijing Pentathlon was 100% sold out and in London tickets sold out within a day. World Championships The Modern Pentathlon World Championships take place annually: Modern Pentathlon was introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm 1912 and marked its 100 year anniversary in London 2012. In Stockholm it comprised the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. It was Pierre De Coubertin’s belief that it would be this event, above all others, that "tested a man’s moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete.” For Senior men from 1949 For Senior women from 1981 For Junior men from 1965 For Junior women from 1989 For Youth A (17-18 years), Men & Women from 1994 World Championship include: individual, team, team relay and mixed relay events. Youth World Championships differ slightly in that they do not include riding. In 2013, the way the 36 athletes qualify for the final will be different: •2 groups - the top 12 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups •3 groups - the top 8 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups •4 groups - the top 6 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann Pierre De Coubertin 2 The athletes then compete in the Final, one day later, which is therefore comprised of the best 36 competitors from these qualifiers. Individual medals are awarded as well as team medals which are decided by adding the three individual team member’s scores together. For the relay event this consists of 16 teams of three athletes competing in a continuous relay completed in one day. Each team member swims 100m, fences one opposing team member, rides a horse over 9 x show jumps and completes the competition with the combined event that consists of 2 series of shooting and 2 x 800m running. 3 MODERN PENTATHLON COMPETITIONS World Cup Series A World Cup Series for both Men and Women has been organised since 1990. Each year between 4 and 6 World Cup competitions and a World Cup Final are organised and the whole package is called the World Cup Series. 36 athletes compete in the World Cup Final. Mixed Relay World Cup Series 2013 will see the first Mixed Relay World Cup Series. In each World Cup, there will be 16 pairs and the best 8 pairs will advance to the World Cup Final. Biathle Designed as a ‘Sport for All’, Biathle has been practised for over 50 years. Through Biathle the UIPM has established a competition comprised of the two fundamental components of Modern Pentathlon and most practised sports in the world – run and swim. The Biathle competition begins with a pack start of runners who complete one-half of the total running distance before entering a 50 meter transition area. Athletes then dive into the water and swim the required swimming distance before exiting the water, putting on their shoes and running the second leg of the run to the finish line. The first athlete to cross the finish line wins. THE FIVE EVENTS The sport was invented as the ultimate physical and mental test of an Olympic athlete by the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, in 1909 and held for the first time in the Olympic Games in 1912. While the sports disciplines chosen 100 years ago remain, the rules have evolved to make Modern Pentathlon even more challenging for the athletes and even more exciting for spectators. All five events now take place over a single day, instead of the initial five days, and the shooting and running disciplines have been combined to create a thrilling climax to the event. Points awarded to athletes in the first three events are converted into a time handicap for the final combined event, with every four points giving a one second advantage. So if you’re new to the sport, just remember that the first athlete to cross the finish line in the final combined event wins the Gold medal. The competition format is as follows: Fencing The Modern Pentathlon starts with the fencing. Each athlete fences against all his or her rivals with an electric epée in bouts that last up to a minute. Just one hit is needed to win each contest. If neither fencer has scored a hit after 60 seconds then both register a defeat so the action can get pretty frenetic in the final seconds. An athlete who wins 25 of their 35 bouts will get 1,000 pentathlon points, with each victory or defeat above or below this number worth a plus or minus score of 24 points. That makes every fencing victory worth a six-second head start in the final combined event. School Biathle In 2005 UIPM launched a new competition linked to the success of Biathle. The event consists of the swimming and running disciplines. The swimming discipline is conducted in a 25m or 50m pool and the running discipline is conducted on any flat surface. The swimming discipline is conducted first and the running discipline is mass start. The Final result is the sum of the swimming and running points. The originality of the ‘World School Biathle’ is that schools will take part to this international competition by entering their results in a global database using the UIPM website (www. pentathlon.org) directly from their location. Therefore this competition does not require any funding for transportation or lodging. All can be made ‘at home’ by the registered physical education teacher or coach. 4 5 Swimming Combined event: running and shooting Next, the athletes head to the pool for the second event - 200m freestyle swim. The races are seeded, with the fastest swimmers competing in the final heat. A time of 2:30 is worth 1,000 pentathlon points; every third of a second faster or slower than this time will be worth a plus or minus score of four points. So a one-second advantage over a rival in the pool would give a competitor a threesecond head start in the combined event. For the climax of the competition, athletes run a total distance of 3,200m, stopping to shoot and hit the target five times from 10 metres distance before each 800m leg; this is repeated four times. Athletes can start running the next 800m leg once they’ve hit the target five times. If they still haven’t hit five the target five times after 50 seconds they are allowed to continue, but any hopes of a medal will have gone. At London 2012, laser guns were used instead of pellet pistols for the first time in an Olympic Games. The competitor who’s amassed the most points in the first three events starts the combined event first, with the rest of the field facing a one second handicap for every four pentathlon points by which they trail the leader. This ensures that the first person to cross the finish line wins the Gold medal. Riding In the riding event, the athletes have to complete a show jumping course that is between 350m-450m and includes 12 obstacles in a set time. To make things harder, the athletes ride unfamiliar horses that are assigned randomly. Each athlete gets just 20 minutes and five practice jumps to get to know the horse in the warm-up ring, before coming out to compete. A clear round within the time allowed is worth 1,200 pentathlon points. Competitors lose 40 points for each jump they knock down, for a refusal to jump or for the first fall, which is equivalent to a 10-second handicap in the combined event. They also lose four points for each second they are over the allowed time. It’s necessary to cross the final line otherwise the rider will be eliminated with zero points for the riding. 6 7 2013 RULE CHANGES 2013 MAJOR COMPETITIONS The combined event will now have 4 shooting series (still of 5 shots) and 4 laps of 800m running. This has changed from 3 shooting series and 3 laps of 1000m running. What When Where The time out for shooting is now 50 seconds, reduced from 70 seconds. So, if the athlete does not hit their 5 shots in 50 seconds, they time out and can start running. UIPM World Cup #1 20th-24th February Palm Springs, USA UIPM World Cup #2 20th-24th March Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL UIPM World Cup #3 17th-21st April Chengdu, CHINA UIPM World Cup #4 8th-12th May Budapest, HUNGARY UIPM World Cup Final 31st May2nd June Nizhny-Novgorod, RUSSIA Junior World Championships 25th-30th July Budapest, HUNGARY Youth World Championships 8th-11th August Wuhan, CHINA Senior World Championships 15th-21st August Kaoshiung, CHINESE TAIPEI Each penalty in riding, such as a knockdown, refusal and first fall is now all 40 points. In 2013, if an athlete does NOT finish the riding course, they will get 0 points. This is the same as running or swimming. Previously if a rider did not complete the course they still received points. Reasons why they would not finish the course would be: 4 refusals & 2 fall downs which means they are eliminated or an injury sustained to the athlete or the horse. The way athletes qualify for the finals has now changed: In 2013, the way the 36 athletes qualify for the final will be different: •2 groups - the top 12 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups •3 groups - the top 8 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups •4 groups - the top 6 from each group + 12 with the highest score of all groups This will mean that athletes have to run hard to the end to ensure qualification which will bring much more excitement to the qualification days. 8 9 MODERN PENTATHLON & BIATHLE CALENDAR FromTo Description 18.01.13 20.01.13 Wiktor Platan Winter Cup Country 18.01.13 20.01.13 Winter Pentathlon-Tetrathlon 01.02.13 03.02.13 International Indoor Competition HUN FIN FIN FromTo Description Helsinki City 20.07.13 21.07.13 Biathle World Tour # 6 POR Country Helsinki 20.07.13 21.07.13 Biathle European Championships POR Setubal Budapest 25.07.13 30.07.13 Junior World Championships HUN Budapest POR City Setubal 03.02.13 10.02.13 Open Mexican Championships MEX Veracruz 08.08.13 11.08.13 Youth A World Championships CHN Wuhan 14.02.13 17.02.13 Open Winter Kazakhstan Championships KAZ Almaty 15.08.13 21.08.13 Senior World Championships TPE Kaoshiung 20.02.13 24.02.13 UIPM World Cup #1 USA Palm Springs CA 31.08.13 Dutch Open Coubertin NED Arnhem 09.03.13 09.09.13 GBR Youth A and Youth B International GBR Gloucestershire 07.09.13 07.09.13 Minister of Defence Cup RUS Moscow 15.03.13 17.03.13 Swiss Women International Competition SUI Bern 20.09.13 23.09.13 Jury Horishko Memorial KGZ Bishkek 20.03.13 24.03.13 UIPM World Cup #2 BRA Rio de Janeiro 20.09.13 23.09.13 European Youth Olympic Games Qualifications POR Caldas da Rainha 12.04.13 16.04.13 Cuban Youth A & B Nationals CUB Villa Clara 20.10.13 20.10.13 UIPM Biathle World Championships TBC TBC 17.04.13 21.04.13 UIPM World Cup #3 CHN Chengdu 21.10.13 28.10.13 Asian Championships KAZ Almaty 18.04.13 21.04.13 Budapest Open Cup HUN Budapest 25.10.13 27.10.13 Open Junior Championships of Poland POL Dronzkow 27.04.13 28.04.13 Trofeu Vila Sant Boi ESP Sant Boi 26.10.13 27.10.13 Champion of Champions TBC TBC 08.05.13 12.05.13 UIPM World Cup #4 HUN Budapest 13.11.13 17.11.13 South American Championships CHI Santiago 09.05.13 12.05.13 Cuban Youth C & D Nationals CUB Las Tunas TBC TBC African Youth Olympic Games Qualifications TBC TBC 11.05.13 12.05.13 “Hristo Chochev” Memorial Youth A BUL Pazarjik 17.05.13 19.05.13 Polish Junior International POL Drzonkow 24.05.13 25.05.13 Open German Championships GER Bonn 31.05.13 02.06.13 UIPM World Final RUS Nizhny - Novgorod 06.06.13 09.06.13 Budapest Open Championships HUN Budapest 10.06.13 12.06.13 Open Senior Championship of Poland POL Drzonkow 13.06.13 16.06.13 Youth B European Championships FRA Nice 13.06.13 16.06.13 NORCECA Youth Olympic Games Qualyfication + CUB Havana Youth A&B Champin 15.06.13 16.06.13 Kremlin Cup RUS Moscow 18.06.13 22.06.13 Open Belarus Championships BLR Minsk 20.06.13 26.06.13 Junior European Championships GBR TBC 20.06.13 23.06.13 Open Central Asian Cup KGZ Bishkek 27.06.13 30.06.13 Memorial of I. He won three of the five events but then, after his single victory, he never competed in a major competition again. 2.Lars Hall (SWE) who won the next two World Championships is one of a small number of men who have won both World and Olympic individual titles. The others are Balczó (HUN), Peciak (POL), Masala (ITA), Starostin (URS), Skrzypaszek (POL) and Svatkovsky (RUS). 3.Among the women, only Stephanie Cook (GBR) and Zsuzsanna Vörös (HUN) have won both World and Olympic titles. 4.Winning the World Championship in Olympic year has, unfortunately, not been a good predictor of Olympic success. Zsuzsanna Vörös (HUN) is the only pentathlete to have achieved this feat. 5.World champions, Igor Novikov (URS), Björn Thofelt (SWE), Pavel Lednev (URS), Boris Onischenko (URS) and Janusz Peciak (POL) have something else in common: they all scored zero points in the riding event of a World Championship. 6.In 1994, the women’s teams from Poland and Italy tied for first place with exactly 15,352 points each. Positions in each event had to be calculated and that gave the victory to Italy. 7.When Anna Sulima (POL) won the individual title in 1998 she was adding to some impressive career success in the World Championship. Apart from that individual gold, she had won 8 golds, a silver and a bronze in the team event and 3 golds and a silver in the relay. 8.Sulima’s team mate, Dorota Idzi was possibly even more successful. She won the individual gold in 1988 plus a silver and 3 bronzes. In the team event she won 7 golds, a silver and a bronze and in the relay, 6 gold medals. 9.On only four occasions has the podium in the individual event been filled entirely by members of the same nation. In 1957, 1973 and 1974 the USSR’s men had a clean sweep and in 1982 Great Britain’s women achieved the same triumph. 10.China produced its first two individual World Champions, one male, one female, Qian Zhenhua (2005) and Chen Qian (2009). Korea’s victory in the Men’s Relay in 2012 also showed that Asian pentathletes are now leading the world. 12 11.In 1953, Hungary and Sweden were the only European teams at the event in Chile. Hungary won comfortably but a protest from Sweden about a riding infringement had the Hungarians disqualified and Sweden named the new champions. Sweden never won the team event again. 12.Hungary has won the most gold medals in the men’s competition (13 individual, 17 team and 10 relay). 13.Poland is the most successful women’s team (5 individual, 11 team, 8 relay, and 1 mixed relay). 14.In the short history of the Mixed Relay (2010-2012), the Ukraine team have claimed the event as their own with two golds and one silver medal. 15.Not many athletes have won both Junior and Senior World Championships. Men in that category are: Kelemen (HUN), Starostin (URS), Fábián (HUN), Svatkovsky (RUS), Balogh (HUN), Moiseev (RUS), Marosi (HUN) and Karyakin (RUS). Women who have won both titles are: Suvorova (RUS), Vörös (HUN) and the only non-Hungarian / Russian in the list, Claudia Corsini (ITA). 16.Teams from North America have won the Men’s team title on three occasions: USA (1979), Mexico (1998) and USA again (2000). However, the Women’s individual title was won by Lynn Chornobrywy (CAN) in 1983 and by Lori Norwood (USA) in 1989. Bob Nieman (USA) was also World Men’s Champion in 1979. 17.Nico Motchebon (GER) who won silver and bronze relay medals at the 1989 and 1991 World Championships made a very unusual sporting transition. In 1995 he broke Sebastian Coe’s European 800m record and then finished 5th in the 1996 Olympic final in Atlanta. 18.When Pernille Svarre (DEN) became World Champion in 2000, it was the result of a long hard battle. She had competed since the very first Women’s World Championship in 1981, nineteen years before. 19.Sophie Moressee (FRA), a silver medallist in 1986, also had a long career in Modern Pentathlon. She went on to become a member of France’s gold-medal winning epée team at Atlanta in 1996. 20.In the early years of the Men’s World Championships, when numbers were low, there were, nevertheless, entries from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Belgium, Cuba, and Uruguay. 13 ATHLETE PROFILES: WOMEN CHN GBR BRA LTU Laura Asadauskaite Yane Marques Samantha Murray Chen Qian Residence: Vilnius, Lithuania Residence: Recife, Brazil Residence: Bath, Great Britain Residence: Suzhou City, China Date of birth: 28 February 1984 Date of birth: 7 January 1984 Date of birth: 25 September 1989 Date of birth: 14 January 1987 Year Started Modern Pentathlon: 2002 Year Started Modern Pentathlon: 2003 Year Started Modern Pentathlon: 2009 Year Started Modern Pentathlon: 2002 Coaches Name: Jevgenij Kliosov & Andrejus Zadneprovskis. The mixed relay made its debut on the senior circuit at the 2010 World Championships and has been a regular fixture at all World Championships since. Basic rules of how a Mixed Relay works: • Each mixed relay pair comprises of one man and one women from the same country. The Mixed Relay World Cup Series will work by: • Fencing: Each pair fences against each other in a round robin, with the men fencing the men and the women fencing the women from the opposing team. • Maximum of 16 pairs per event • Swimming: Each pair swims in a 2x100 meter relay. • Each country can submit a maximum of 2 pairs if there are remaining spots in the 16 • Riding: Both team members take it in turn to ride a 9 obstacle course. • The top 12 pairs qualify for the World Cup Final through the Mixed Relay World Cup Series Ranking (best 3 results are added together) • Countries can change their pairs throughout the World Cup Series • Generous prize money is on offer for the Mixed Relay World Cup Final medal winners • Combined event: All the pairs' points are tallied from the previous 3 disciplines and the pair with the most points starts first. The women from the pairs starts first and completes 2 rounds of the combined event which involves 2 shooting series (hitting the target 5 times) and 2 rounds of 800m running. Once this is completed, the men then do the same and whomever crossed the finishing line first is the winner. The inaugural 2013 Mixed Relay World Cup Series schedule: • UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #1 Palm Springs, USA 24 February 2013 • UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #2 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 24 March 2013 • UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #3 Chengdu, China 21 April • UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup #4 Budapest, Hungary 12 May 2013 • UIPM Mixed Relay World Cup Final Nizhny–Novgorod, Russia 2 June 2013 38 39 LASER SHOOTING During the London 2012 Olympic Games, laser shooting was used for the first time at the Olympic level with huge success. Laser shooting was first implemented on the senior circuit in the 2011 season after testing the system at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The new laser shooting technology has been developed to perfectly replicate an athlete shooting with the traditional air pellet pistol, to stay coherent with the rules. Right down to the laser staying in the barrel for 10ms, as this is as long as it takes for a pellet to leave the pistol. An athlete can change their air pellet pistol to a laser shooting pistol in a matter of seconds by simply changing their barrel to an environmentally friendly laser barrel. All top level UIPM events in 2013 will be conducted with Precision Laser Targets (PLT) which will give athletes real time feedback of where each shot has gone on a personal screen next to them. Why the change to laser shooting? • Increased safety makes the sport more accessible to the masses. Now literally everyone can practice the sport from toddlers up! • Reduction of lead pellets which leads to ton’s of dangerous lead pollution, which is harmful to both athletes and the environment. • Cheaper solutions to build shooting ranges, which can now be transparent to allow better viewing of the action. • Media and Spectators have the ability to get closer to the action as safety concerns are abolished. • Ability to continually improve and develop the technology for more interaction for the spectators and media. • Enhanced capabilities for television data displays • Increased level of shooting data can be produced • Face on filming of athletes now a possibility • Events can now be organised anywhere, even in a busy city centre as seen at the 2011 Champion of Champions. 40 41 PAST
