Charting our Course - NSB 2039!
In an effort to help prepare our community for challenges and
opportunities that may occur over the next 25 years, the residents of New Smyrna Beach have been providing input on
future city-wide priorities and issues of broad concern. A community forum was held in March featuring nationally recognized futurist Rebecca Ryan. Input from the community survey process was reviewed and statements were developed for
the desired future for New Smyrna Beach. The statements
will be presented on an agenda in the near future, requesting
approval of the City Commission to move forward in making
the City of New Smyrna Beach Future Ready!

Here at the Golf Course things have been very busy this season, from sunrise to sunset. To kick off the season, a

year old membership policy. People were in the Bahamas and saw us on the TV!
The Indian River Golf Tournament as always was a huge success with over 130 pro golfers competing for the title!
This year’s winner was Ty Harris winning with a sudden death playoff on the 1st hole.

Canal Street Gateway Mini Park
Ground Breaking Ceremony
March 14
A ground breaking ceremony to create an attractive front door to the Canal Street Historic
District was held in March. Landscaping of the
Canal Street Gateway Mini Park was launched at
4:30 p.m., Friday, March 14, at the site on the
southwest corner of Canal Street and U.S. 1,
New Smyrna Beach.
When complete, the landscaping project will
feature majestic date palms, native shrubbery
and grasses. The Friends of Historic Canal
Street non-profit organization is spearheading
the project and is working to raise funds to
match a $15,000 City of New Smyrna Beach
Community Redevelopment Agency grant.
NSB Patrol Vehicles to Have a New Look
By Sgt. Eugene Griffith
For the first time since 1999 the City’s Police force is unveiling a new look on their marked patrol cars.
The Police Department took delivery of seven new Chevrolet Caprice patrol cars, which are currently being made only for law enforcement use. The new vehicles are replacements to cars with high mileage that
will be removed from the fleet. The new cars will also feature a new decal design.
The design was selected after members of the
agency were asked to provide examples for the
new look. Each vehicle cost approximately
$40,000 and is equipped with new in-car video
recorders, radar units, and mobile computers.

The building receiving the
residential 2014 Donnadine
Miller Memorial Historic
Preservation Award was built
around 1910 and is located at
616 Magnolia Street. The
building was constructed in
the Bungalow style, which was
the most popular choice for
housing between 1900 and
1930. Bungalow houses exhibit
low pitched roof, wide porches, and large windows.
The building receiving the nonresidential 2014 Donnadine Miller
Memorial Historic Preservation
Award was built around 1911 and
is located at 149 Canal Street. The
building was constructed in the
Frame Vernacular style. This style
applies to wood frame buildings
that cannot be classified as representing a definitive high-style of
architecture. Vernacular buildings
typically rise one or two stories,
and have gable or hip roofs.
Horizontal weatherboard siding or
drop siding are the most common
exterior surfaces.

Economic Development News!
The City Commission has suspended City Police, Fire, and Transportation Impact Fees for non-residential
projects that receive a building permit before July 1, 2014 and complete the project (and receive a Certificate of Occupancy) before July 1, 2015. For further information please contact Tony Otte, CRA/Economic
Development Director, at the email address or phone number below.
The “City Ready” service provides an on-site meeting at no charge with key City staff members to discuss
how a potential lessee or buyer, or a property owner can maximize the use of a commercial building and/or
property. Such meetings normally take less than one hour and provide a wealth of useful information for
business planning.
In addition, City staff can arrange meetings or obtain information from the City’s partner economic development resource agencies, including Team Volusia, the CEO Business Alliance, the Volusia County Economic Development Department, the Small Business Development Center at Daytona State College, and
Career Source Flagler Volusia.
For prominent Commercial/Industrial properties for sale or lease, please go to Volusiasites.com and click
on New Smyrna Beach.
The New Smyrna Beach Economic Development Advisory Board typically meets on the third Wednesday
of every month in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall at 6 pm. Meeting agendas are posted on the
City’s website, cityofnsb.com.

Ribbon cuttings and Groundbreakings Enhance Economic Development
This month the City of New Smyrna Beach celebrates the ribbon-cutting for one project and groundbreakings for two more, all anticipated to have a positive impact on economic development:

Swoope Boat Ramp – The new boat ramp is now open! It
is conveniently located on North US1 across from the airport, on the inter-coastal waterway. The new ramp is nearly a direct shot to the inlet, so boats heading off shore will
save time and fuel. With two nearby car dealerships moving across town to SR 44, city staff anticipates that the
new boat ramp may encourage boat dealerships to move
to the former car dealer sites.

The New Smyrna Beach Pedestrian Trail
The 2.2 mile trail connects Sugar Mill Drive to West Pine Avenue,
at the edge of the City’s core area. This is the first segment of the
plan for a longer trail that will link the area west of I-95 to the
City’s downtown, and connect with the Cross Volusia Trail. Bike
and Pedestrian Trails are identified in the City’s Economic Development Plan as part of the strategy to attract both residential and
business development.
