Several women went out to lunch to celebrate the birthday of their oldest friend. When the waitress came to take their order, one of the women said to her, “This is a very special occasion. It’s Elsie’s ninety-second birthday.” The waitress made several instant enemies and one fast friend when she asked, “Which one of you is Elsie?” VÉâÇàÜç VÄâu `tÇÉÜ February 2008 Newsletter Edited by Lee & Mary Bakewell POSTAL TRUCK Every Wednesday from 11:05 AM until 11:15 AM a postal truck is in front of the 45 building to handle all your postal requests. DARTS On the Second Wednesday of the month, Kathy Pansegrau from Darts is in the office from 1 to 3:30 PM. If you have any questions or needs that Darts can handle please stop in and visit with Kathy. If you would rather she visit you in your home, please just give George a call and he will send her up the next time she arrives. Ellen Rongitsch (#324) had been living at Carousel Apartments (1335 Oakdale). One Lee presents a referral fee to day, she mentioned to Yvonne, the long time Carousel Manager, Yvonne Woods manager of Carousel, that she wanted to move because she wanted something nicer. Rather than just letting her go apartment shopping, Yvonne referred her to Country Club Manor. Yvonne had seen how nice it is here while she was attending a R.O.M.A. meeting hosted by Country Club Manor some time ago. (ROMA is West St. Paul’s Responsible Owners and Managers Association, kind of a liaison between the City and apartment managers. CCM will be hosting it again this month on the 14th.) It’s kind of nice to know even other apartment managers appreciate what we have here! Carousel is a very nice building with UG parking, elevator, and even a pool (albeit outdoors so probably not too useful these past couple of weeks.) Carousel is NOT a seniors-only building so if you know someone looking for an apartment who isn’t at least 55, they could reach Yvonne at 457-0041. She has a 1BR and a 3BR available right now. Choosing your own neighbors is easy! Just give George the name and number of someone you think might be looking for a nice apartment. That’s all there is to it. Or you can give the office number (451-2633) to your friend. When your friend joins our little community, you will receive two $100 certificates of appreciation to use towards your rent. ROYALTY AT COUNTRY CLUB MANOR St. Paul’s Winter Carnival “King Boreas Rex” and his Senior Royal Court visited the Southview Senior Living Center (1984 Oakdale, practically across the street from us) on January 11, 2008. The celebration went on, as usual for about an hour. The King had one last Royal Announcement. Calling Mayann Knoll (#306) to the center podium, the King and his Court bestowed the honor of “Royal Knight” upon Maryann presenting her with a beautiful bouquet and a Winter Carnival Royal Family Certificate. The big surprise was that the residents themselves had nominated Maryann--who has been employed there for some time--prior to the King’s visit, and they were all able to keep it a secret! Maryann was shocked they actually pulled it off without a peep! The honor recognizes citizens of our community for their outstanding and faithful services. May we all have the love and patience to serve others as the need arises, as CCM’s very own Maryanne clearly does! Congratulations Maryann! REMINDERS: MAINTENANCE: Any maintenance emergency can be reported after hours by calling our digital pager at 612-640-1948. (Just punch in your number after the beep.) If you have any maintenance needs, please leave a note for us. (Maintenance requests should always be in writing. This helps assure they don’t “fall through the cracks.) Controlled entrance: When your apartment is buzzed, please use the intercom to make certain it’s someone you know before buzzing in a stranger. Do not let anyone into the building after hours that are asking for the office. Please do not let anyone in the door that is not YOUR guest. Safety should be everyone’s concern. Ice is slippery: We live in Minnesota and it can get very slippery outside in the winter. Please be very careful when you walk in the winter. It can be slippery anywhere and anyplace, on the steps, in the parking lot and even in the drive way. We try to put salt and sand down to clear the ice, but when it warms up and then the temperature drops every evening it is very hard to keep up. Please be careful, especially when we get a light dusting of snow, as it can be slippery also. Visitors: We would also like to remind everyone that you are responsible for your visitors and their actions. Please be sure your visitors are not disturbing other residents’ right to peace and quiet. We want to continue to maintain a quiet and pleasant building. . Going Away? Please notify the office if you plan to be gone for an extended period. If there is an emergency, we must have a contact person. Snow Removal: Please make sure your vehicles are moved for the snow plow. Unmoved vehicles, unfortunately, are often towed at owner’s expense. Thanks for your cooperation. Trash: Please remember to bag you garbage, before dropping down the chute. If your bag is TOO LARGE to go down the chute, please take it down and deposit it directly in the garbage dumpster in the garage. Pool: Please, NO swimming in the pool during the hour long aerobics classes on Monday at 1 PM or Saturday at 10 AM. Those times are reserved for aerobics only. But you could join the class if you like! ¾ “Happy Hour”: Every Tuesday 4 to almost 6. Bring your own wine or whatever. You should not need a designated driver unless you can’t walk! ¾ Game Night: Every Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. Bring a game, deck of cards, snack to pass, or just come and join the fun. Coffee will be served and a pop machine is available in the pool room. If you want something else to drink, feel free to bring it with you. Some games will be provided. ¾ Bingo Night: Every Thursday from 7—9 p.m. You get 3 cards for a quarter. ¾ Movie Night: Most Fridays (Watch the Bulletin Boards) Take in one of the many movies from Pat Wacker’s (#201) DVD collection . . . or bring your own. Sit back and enjoy our home theater in the Club Room beginning at 7:00 p.m. ¾ CCM AEROBICS: Every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (and Mondays at 1 p.m.) Aerobics is a good way to exercise without putting the stress on bones and joints that walking and other exercise can do. Everyone agrees our leader, Jared Fuller, is the greatest instructor ever! Best of all, like most activities at Country Club Manor, it’s all totally FREE! Please join us for CCM Aerobics held every Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, and Monday afternoons at 1:00 PM as well! The only cost is that if you DON’T attend, your good health will suffer! So please come on down and visit your neighbor while losing a pound or two! Everyone is welcome. ¾ Every Day of the Week is Puzzle Day If you’ve ever passed by the area between the east Club Room door and the entrance to the 45 building, you no doubt have witnessed our “perpetual puzzle.” Wouldn’t you like to tell your grandchildren you once worked on a 5,000 piece puzzle? ¾ Saturday Morning Coffee and Donuts: Every Saturday morning, we have coffee and donuts in the club room from 9-10:30 am. Kevin Ericson usually caters this delightful event with help from Don and Carol Standley. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors. You do not need to commit to every Saturday. If you can make it this Saturday, but have to miss the next three, that’s no problem. This is not like a golf or bowling league where you must attend every week . . . or not at all! Please stop by when you get a chance and join in the fun. ¾ POTLUCK/Birthday Party: February’s potluck/birthday party will be held on Monday, February 25 in the Club Room starting at 5:30. I hope to see you there. FOR THE FUNNY BONE A group of young schoolchildren took a field trip to their local police station, where they saw pictures of the ten most wanted criminals tacked to a bulletin board. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. “Yes,” the policeman replied. “The detectives want very badly to capture him.” The youngster then asked, “Why didn’t you just lock him up after you took his picture?” A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. The CEO said to the young man, “This is a very sensitive and important document here, and my assistant has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?” “Certainly,” said the young executive. He turned the machine on inserted the paper and pressed the start button. “Excellent!” exclaimed the CEO as his paper disappeared into the machine. “I just need one copy.” A MESSAGE FROM MARY Happy Valentine’s Day to every one! Kevin & Kathy and Don & Carol will be hosting a Valentine’s brunch on Saturday February 16th at 11:30 AM. You are invited to come and bring a dish to share. We have great cooks at CCM so be sure to pass up breakfast that morning. Keep in mind there will be NO Coffee and Donuts that morning. Thanks to Kevin, Kathy, Don and Carol for all your help. I hear the New Year’s Eve party was a great success and that Dee was the hit of the party with her keyboard and her tunes. Maybe she will entertain us again for St. Patty’s day next month? I hear her “fee” is a bottle of nice wine. Thanks everyone for your co operation with unit inspections this past month. I am sorry we had to spring them on you at the last minute. I received a call from the Fire Department telling me that even though we had checked and installed all the new smoke detectors just recently, they still wanted all of them tested in the month of January and a report sent in to them by the end of the month. Thanks George and Dan for taking care of this for me. With year end reports, CRP’s and fitting in a small break to Disney World with the grandsons, I just did not have enough time in a day to do it myself. Sorry I missed you, but I will be around the building again soon. Kathy E. #107 & Carol S. #220 Mary S. #311 & Missy S. #224 CCM FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS REMINDER: DARTS & INTERIM HEALTHCARE Be sure to stop by the Club Room for the free blood pressure clinic. Thanks to all those who attended the Darts Program last month. If anyone is interested in a shopping trip, please let either George or Mary Ellen know. Darts has so much to offer for seniors. In fact, “It’s more than a bus.” • 1st week of the month on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. is Ask a Nurse and blood pressure. • 2nd week of the month on Wednesday from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. a service coordinator will be on-site in the CCM office. CCM’S MANY ACTIVITIES EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK, “THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON” ¾ Poker Club: Every Monday Afternoon at 1:00 PM , in the Club Room. Please call Jim Long at 455-4893 for further information. ¾ CCM AEROBICS: Every Monday Afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the pool. ¾ Bridge Club: Every Tuesday at 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM in the club room. Call Gerry Brack at 455-8531 for further information. George and Dan probably delivered your CRP’s when they checked your smoke detectors and replaced your filters. Please place them in a safe place or file right away. I know the State does not send out the refunds until August, but you can send it in now and still get the refund in August. Because of the amount of work involved with each CRP on our part, if you misplace it and request a duplicate later in the year we will need to charge a $25 duplication fee. As you know we have had a problem with the front steps. We wanted to totally replace them but we also wanted something commensurate with the quality and prestige of Country Club Manor. Then we learned that the entryway foyers have floors made of “New York Bluestone.” This is a very special and durable material quarried in—you guessed it—New York. So our plans are to pull up all the pebble stone, repair any damaged concrete below, and then pave the steps with bluestone. The contractor claims he can get each set of steps done in a week. How can this be done when it’s so cold outside? The workmen will build shelters and heat them with propane. Plus they will use “electric blankets.” When we learned it was possible, we thought winter would be a better time because there is less traffic . . . and George thought there would be less snow to shovel! Anyway, watch for the barricades and thanks for putting up with the inconvenience. Till next month God Bless, Mary A NOTE FROM GEORGE I hope everyone had a great time bringing in the New Year. As you know we missed the party here at the club room. I heard the party had a great turn out and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to Dee Weimer, you had excellent entertainment as well. We went to one of our daughters’ home and brought the New Year in there. I even made it to midnight. CCM'S NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY: ONE OF THE BEST YET! See for yourself! The brunch on January 19 had a great turn out. The variety of dishes, breads, and desserts made for a wonderful meal. We will be having another brunch on February 16th at 11:30 am. It will be called a Valentine’s Brunch. The different food everyone brings to share is what makes it a great brunch. Everyone is welcome to participate in this event, as well as the Potlucks, which are the last Mondays in the month. Missy S. #224 Dee W. #102 & Marg B, #115 Super Bowl Sunday, is February 3rd, and there will be a party in the Club Room, starting at 5:30 p.m. Bring a snack to share and have a great time rooting for your favorite team. It is always more fun to watch a game with friends and good food. Remember that the brunches, potlucks, Super Bowl Party, New Year’s Eve party, Halloween party, Saturday morning coffees, and I know there are more, are all hosted and organized by Kevin & Kathy Ericson (many times with help from Don & Carol,) so let’s all give them a big THANK YOU. The “puzzle ladies” (led by Shirley #219 and Bernice #213) started a mammoth puzzle this week. 5000 pieces which, when completed, will be 40x60 inches in size. This will help pass some of the cold days ahead, although it may have warmed up a lot . . . by the time it is done! Stop by and take a look. If you can actually find a piece, you’ll probably get your name in the paper . . . or at least this Newsletter! So far, Bernice, Shirley, Lois, Myrna, Phyliss, Marlene, Madge, and even Lee have all been seen working on it, to name just five. I know it’s the largest puzzle I’ve ever seen. Good Luck. Ken and Maryann K. #306 Great Food! Thank you everyone for doing your EMERGENCY FACT SHEET and turning them in. I am only missing 2 now. It is comforting to know that I now have the correct information on everyone in case of an emergency. Unit inspections went very well. Thanks everyone for letting us disturb your home once more. The W. St. Paul Fire Dept. is very happy that we were able to fit it in and get the smoke detectors done and the report sent in on time last month.
