The DSS Emergency Food Distribution program is an innovative
partnership between the Maryland Food Bank and the Baltimore
City Department of Social Services (BCDSS) to provide emergency
assistance to Baltimore City residents in need.
How Does It Work?
When a Baltimore City resident visits a Department of Social Services
(DSS) Family Investment Center and reports that they do not have food,
they are given an emergency food voucher. These vouchers can be
redeemed at certain DSS distribution sites. DSS boxes are built at the
Maryland Food Bank warehouse and contain a three-day supply of food.
Who Can Receive It?
Any resident of Baltimore City may request an emergency food voucher.
Families with infants may also receive baby formula and diapers.
The household’s size determines the number of vouchers provided:
• 1-3 person(s) – 1 voucher
• 4-6 persons – 2 vouchers
• 7+ persons – 3 vouchers
Clients who experience a state of food insecurity for any reason are
eligible to participate in the emergency food voucher program. If a
client does not have transportation to and from a provider, transit
tokens are provided by the BCDSS department.
