Newsletter 2012
March 2007
Chairman’s Report
Welcome to our newsletter introducing 2012/13 at Dellcott Family
Tennis Club. As always I’m keen to remind everyone of some important club dates so diaries can be updated and plans made for the
season to come.
I’m happy to report that Dellcott Family Tennis Club continues to
thrive in the face of substantial local competition. Membership continues to be good value and is slightly up on last year. Our performance
in the Datchworth summer league strengthened against the previous
year and we extended our participation in local competitions by entering a ladies team in the Hot Rackets league. Despite rain interruptions the Club Grand Finals day was a big success. A full report and
photos can be read later in this newsletter.
We started the year with a “maintenance day” to complete a backlog
of odd jobs and clear the site of accumulated broken furniture and
repair the net above the practice wall – at last!
The highlight of the year’s social calendar - the summer ball - was
great
fun and enjoyed by all. It was superbly organised and the band provided us with top quality entertainment. We shouldn’t forget the
smaller events such as tea & tennis which this year we will be organising on a more informal basis so keep an eye open for the emails
about tea and tennis, curry night and more. Of course, as always the
social year was drawn to a close by the Dellcott Bonfire Party which
was once again highly popular.

PLEASE make a note of the following VERY important dates
in the club‘s calendar
Sunday 1st April 2012 Start of the new club year and time to renew
membership. We hope you enjoy the club and will continue your
affiliation. 2012/13 membership subscription for a Family is £120,
Single Adult £78, Junior/Student £30. Please complete the membership renewal form at the back of this newsletter or download a
copy from www.dellcott.com .
10th April 2012. We encourage everyone to enter the tournament, so
please complete the entry form and return with payment to Robbie
Starling at 87 Attimore Road by this date.
1
Saturday 21st April 2012 the AGM at the Pavilion followed by a Quiz/Wine Tasting.
Again, this year the draw for Wimbledon tickets will take place at the AGM. The
rules for the draw have been modified slightly. Please make sure you familiarise
yourself by visiting www.dellcott.com (see later in this newsletter).
Sunday 22nd April 2012 is the Club’s open day when we will be showing off the
club to the wider community. Open to all-comers who want to join in with few hours
of social tennis – or just socialise - and maybe even join the club.
Sunday 15th July 2012 is the Tennis Club Grand Finals Day. Please keep this day
free so you can enter the tournament.
Anthony’s coaching and holiday courses have continued to be popular local activities, particularly during half term holidays. A schedule of coaching courses is included in this newsletter. A reminder that Saturday morning coaching sessions are
available from 9am with adult coaching between 11am and 12noon.
Please don’t hesitate to promote the club and recommend it to friends - we will be
happy to welcome new members. The exceptionally mild autum enabled virtually
nonstop “out of season” tennis so don’t wait for the summer to encourage members
- we’re here all year round.
Ultimately it is the members and particularly the committee members who volunteer
their time in order to make the club successful and provide a unique atmosphere
and experience. My gratitude, as always, to the committee who you will no doubt
meet over the coming months.
There are some changes to the committee to note for the forthcoming AGM. We are
pleased to welcome Lucy Gravett who will be running the pre-school play group this
coming year. Our thanks to Sarah Halliday who has supported the play group for the
past two years.
In last year’s newsletter I reported the work of the committee in planning for the future. Four lines of work will continue to be the focus of attention:- Improved security
for the site; Flood lighting to improve access the club’s facilities; on-going membership development and expanding our participation in local competitions to give all
members the opportunity to play competitive tennis.
We have started to put those plans into action by applying for planning permission
for new gates to improve security, canvassing opinion from local residents on the
installation of flood lighting, participating in the hot rackets tournament and actively
generating new membership through our annual open day and social
events. However, it is fair to say that having taken expert advice we now have a
slightly different view of priorities and will need to complete essential maintenance to
the club house along with the erection of new entrance gates before we can pursue
flood lighting. Also from our initial exploration of flood lighting options and resident’s
feedback it is clear that more work needs to done in specifying options and justifying
the investment.
Hopefully you will have noticed the changes to the web site which has now been migrated to a specialist provider giving us much
more control over the information we
2
present. Although we currently use a fraction of its features we are now able to post
news bulletins and distribute emails with much greater ease and security. Indeed,
for the time being, email and the news bulletins (see the home page of
www.dellcott.com) are our main means of communicating with members. So it is important that members keep us informed of any changes to key contact information,
particularly email addresses (if you sign up for an on-line account, you can amend
your own details, and look up contact details of fellow members!)
Many may be unaware that the club’s lease agreement with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council expires at the end of March 2012. The trustees of the club are working
with the Council to ensure the new lease is in place for the start of the new membership year.
Once again our Groundsman – Charlie Carden – has kept the site in great shape.
Just after Christmas we spent a few wet days cleaning the courts of the year’s
ground-in grime. We are fortunate enough to be surrounded by attractive mature
trees and hedges but these are a major contributory factor in the build-up of residues that encourages moss and makes the playing surfaces slippery.
Finally, a reminder that Dellcott Family Tennis Club is run by and for its members
and I extend a warm welcome to those who joined during 2011 and encourage your
active participation in the coming year. We are always on the look-out for help and
new ideas. I hope you will continue to support and enjoy the club and I look forward
to seeing you on court or off in the coming months.

Wimbledon Tickets
Your Membership and LTA British Tennis membership and Wimbledon tickets
Membership subscriptions for 2012/13 are due on or before 1st April
2012 ( and must be paid before the AGM) if you want to be considered
for Wimbledon tickets). Please complete the membership renewal form
and return it to Caroline Herring as soon as possible together with your
annual subscription. If you are not re-joining please let us know so we
can update our records.
Please remember that the number of Wimbledon tickets we are allocated is based on the number of our members who are members
of the LTA's British Tennis. And also that the LTA will only allow
us to allocate those tickets to our members if they have taken out
British Tennis membership. Confused? Don't be! Just go to
http://www.lta.org.uk/membership and join - it's free!
Wimbledon Ticket Draw Rules
Guidelines for Wimbledon 2012 ticket allocation
Every year Dellcott Family Tennis Club receives an allocation of pairs of tickets from
the LTA by virtue of our affiliation to the LTA. We are then able to run a ballot for
members for these tickets. This ballot is usually held on the evening of the AGM in
late April.
We have rules for this ballot, many of which are imposed on us by the LTA. These
rules are:
1
Only current members of the club ( at the time of the ballot) may enter the ballot, and these members must also be British Tennis Members at the time of the
ballot. Each member will be required to provide their British Tennis Membership Number if their name is drawn in the ballot. Details on British Tennis
Membership can be found at: http://www.lta.org.uk/britishtennismembership/.
2
Your membership subscription for the 2012 subs year must be paid in advance
of the ballot.
3
Junior members are allowed to enter the ballot if they are at least 9 years old.
4
If there are multiple members of the club within the same family, they are all
allowed to enter the ballot. However, you are only allowed to win one pair of
tickets per family. You must only accept those that you intend to use yourself
as tickets must not be sold or transferred.
4
Wimbledon Ticket Draw—continued
Guidelines for Wimbledon 2012 ticket allocation
5.
You must be able to pay for your tickets on the night by either cheque or
cash. Therefore, if you are not able to attend the ballot evening, you
will need to appoint a proxy to whom you have given all your contact
details (including your British Tennis Membership Number) and the
means to pay for your tickets. If you have not appointed a proxy, your
tickets will be returned to the draw.
6.
If your name is drawn in the ballot, you will be offered a pair of tickets from
the available list. You will need to decide immediately which pair of tickets
you would like. Therefore you should bring your diary along with you on the
evening to be able to check your availability on that day.
7.
We will draw 2-3 people for a 'waiting list' in case people discover they are
unable to go at a later date.
8.
Our ticket allocation varies from year to year, but our allocation is normally
quite good giving all members a reasonable chance of being lucky.
9.
All the allocated tickets are pairs in adjacent seats and for all the main 'show'
courts at Wimbledon.
10. You MUST NOT sell your tickets on to other people. We have to provide the
member's name and details to the LTA and this information is logged against
that ticket. If these tickets are found to fall into other people's hands, the
club will be held responsible and future Wimbledon tickets for the club are
likely to be suspended. If you cannot use your tickets (even at the last moment), please inform a committee member and the club will endeavour to
allocate them to another member.
We look forward to seeing you at the AGM and ballot evening, and good luck!

DELLCOTT NEWS
CLUB MAINTENANCE
John Wilson
As mentioned in the Chairman's report, plans for this year will concentrate on essential maintenance of the clubhouse and improvements to security including a new gate to the premises. The posts supporting the
clubhouse awning are in urgent need of attention so these will be the immediate priority.
A successful maintenance day (well, afternoon) was held back in March,
many thanks to those that gave up their time over the week-end to help
out. Jobs carried out included major pruning of the bushes behind court
3, repair of the net above the practice wall, a new net fitted to court 2
and many car loads of rubbish were disposed of. The attempted modifications to the court 3 fencing to help with the deep gullies were only partially successful, so we will be looking at ways to improve this further.
Look out for another opportunity to take part in a similar event this year!
You may have noticed that two new picnic benches have appeared – feel
free to make use of these and move them into the sunshine, but please
replace them under the clubhouse awning when you have finished to allow the grass to be cut.
Security has not been as much of a problem this year as in preceeding
years, the regular group of week-end night time visitors has disappeared
(or grown up). There was, however, an attempt to start a fire in the clubhouse, which destroyed one of the table-tennis tables and burnt a hole in
the floor. On a separate occasion two clubhouse windows were smashed.
As usual please could any members passing the club keep an eye out for
any suspicious activity (e.g. late night visitors to the clubhouse) and report either to a committee member or to the Police. The damaged floor
has now been repaired.
The new courts surfaces continue to drain and play well, although one or
two holes have appeared which will need attention. All three courts have
been given a clean recently thanks to the sterling efforts of Andy Stride,
Charlie Carden and Anthony Searle.

CLUB EVENTS
Thursday Night Club Sessions and Social
Events
We have 2 club sessions, Thursday night and Sunday morning. This
maintains the change we made last year—we decided to move club night
to Thursday to encourage more players to come along when not suffering
from the ―end of week‖ syndrome! This worked well last year as we often had 14 or more players turn up! We‘ll also be sending a weekly email to encourage players to sign up on a ―Plan To/Will Be There‖ Google
document if they are intending to come along on the Thursday club night.
You and others will be able to see how many other players (and who they
are) are down to come, and therefore be reassured that you will get a
game.
Last year, we had a varied list of tennis and social events including:







The AGM—with Quiz and Wine Tasting
Tea and Tennis (April , May and June)
The Dellcott Tennis Ball in July
Finals Day (July)
Tea and Tennis (Sept)
Fireworks Night (Nov)
Dellcott members Xmas Drink at the Stanborough (Dec)
These are always good fun, and well attended. We encourage you to
come along to them. You don‘t need to be the best tennis player in the
club to come – and they are a great opportunity to meet other like
minded members in a convivial (often lubricated) environment!
This year we are repeating the programme of Sunday Tea and Tennis
events, as well as repeat the informal and ―fun‖ wine tasting at the
AGM—which was very well enjoyed by all last year.
Dates and organisers of this years events will be posted in the club
house, sent via email and also be available on the website; please try to
come along and support them.
So, just a reminder of club nights/sessions:

Thursday
6pm
- dusk from April onwards

Sunday
11.30am - 1.00pm
Note: We will be continuing to publish a Google Doc on the web site and
e-mailing all members each week with the link. You can register your attendance for the club sessions if you wish, and others will be able to see
that you are going, and that there will be other players to join in with.
7
School’s Out BBQ
The Schools out BBQ was not held last year due to a low number of people booking ahead of time. The event is usually incredibly well attended
so we hope 2011 was just a ‗blip‘. Please look out for further notices
about it, let the organisers know in advance that your child will be attending.
Firework and Bonfire Night
Jonathan Cirkel
We are one of the few clubs to still organise their own bonfire and fireworks night. Unlike many of the major events which take place at parks
and country houses, we have many things in our favour—no traffic jams;
high quality burgers, hot dogs and jacket spuds; an area where your kids
can be with friends with no fear of being lost in the crowds; socialising
around the bonfire with drinks.
This year, another great evening of colour, noise and spectacle and fun
for all the family.

2011 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Robbie Starling
Well the weather gods were on the whole kind on us...just. At one point we
were deliberating whether to call off Finals Day based on the forecast. In the
end we only had reason to come off court 4 times in all. We would have
taken this at 1pm as, as the first set of players were about to step on to
court, the heavens opened! Post that it was either boiling hot or dark clouds
with odd showers thrown in.
The finals themselves were thrilling and played in a great spirit. We were
treated to 5 adult Finals and 5 junior. All of which made for fantastic viewing
for the crowds. The spirit and the sportsmanship in the junior tournament
was absolutely wonderful to witness. The competitors and umpires must be
applauded for playing in such diverse conditions. Congratulations to all the
winners and commiserations to all our gallant runners up.
The Dellcott Arms PH run by Landlord Gary Fitzpatrick was as usual carrying
lots of variety for all and was brilliantly manned. Jo Freckleton‘s Pimms Bar
was extremely popular and we seemed to be selling jug after jug all afternoon. The Dellcott BBQ was run brilliantly by Sausage Boy Chefs Wilson &
Gunstone selling very tasty burgers and Hot dogs. Caroline Herring sold
bowls and bowls of strawberries & Cream. Izzy Gunstone made and sold the
most delicious lemon drizzle cake, while Dad Stuart provided teas and coffees. All of these facilities couldn't have worked without a host of other people putting in a shift or two. Sadly, the fully supervised bouncy castle had to
be cancelled due to health and safety issues—but we hope to be back on this
coming year.
Despite the inclement weather we had big crowds and an amazing amount of
people still there at 7pm for the prize giving who gave up the chance to be at
home watching Darren Clarke stroll up the 18th and claim his first Open! So
thank you.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in
this years tournament from all the people who played in it right through to
those who helped me throughout and on the day, including all the members
who came along and supported the club and the finalists who brought along
family and friends to support them, they were very welcome and it was
lovely to see them. I hope the final was a special day for all those involved
especially the players.
So thank you everyone, see you next year.

DELLCOTT PLAYGROUP REPORT
Lucy Gravatt
It has been another eventful year for Dellcott Toddler
Group. Our three annual events: the Easter Egg Hunt,
Halloween and Christmas Parties remained popular and
pulled in lots of new faces.
However overall numbers unfortunately dwindled during 2011 so we made the decision not to remain open
during November and December. We will be having a
big push for new members this year, hopefully with our
own entry on Facebook so we can communicate more
easily with parents. Watch this space.
We reopen on 16 April with an Easter Egg Hunt and will then be open for
pre-school children and their carers every Monday
from 1.30-3pm. A programme of summer activities will be planned for the school holidays including a picnic at Hatfield House. Siblings will be
very welcome to join in. Our last event of the
year will be our Christmas Party on 17 December.
We cater for children up to school age. In addition
to the outdoor play equipment we have a range of
outdoor and indoor toys for the children to enjoy as
well as craft activities, summer outings and parties.
For details please contact Lucy directly on 07595

TABLE TENNIS
Peter Mathews
This year the first for ages we haven't be able to get a single team out to
play in the local league. Players emigrating or dropping out to train their
dogs really didn't help. So, if you would like to play a bit more and get
some games against varied competition then let me know. Playing in the
lowest league should not be too daunting and would do much to improve
your game.

Datchworth League Reports
Julian Payne
The Datchworth League is a competitive but friendly tennis league with representation from 32 Hertfordshire clubs (full details available at www.datchworth.net)
The Summer league runs on 14 Monday evenings from end-April to end-July. In
2011 there were 120 teams across 15 divisions. Division 1 is a good county standard (I am told!) with the lower divisions being less energetic! There is an Autumn
league played at weekends from early September to mid-November.
We fielded 8 teams in the Summer league which were generally made up from
squads of 6 players (4 men & 2 ladies). In addition to some enjoyable tennis we
managed to improve our results with the main points being:




Team 1 led by Vince Smyth won the Dellcott Team Trophy award for the most
sets won with Team 3 a close second
Team 1 won their division and Team 3 were also promoted – congratulations!
Team 6 were unfortunately relegated
The final summer matches were followed by a very enjoyable evening party in
the club pavilion.
We fielded 3 teams in the Autumn which were made up of larger squads to accommodate the weekend fixtures. Whilst this allowed a greater number of members to
play matches, it may also have contributed to our teams finishing on the wrong end
of some tight matches. Team 1 finished a creditable 3rd but Teams 2 and 3 came
lower in their divisions.
I would like to thank everyone for playing in 2011 and especially the Team Captains
for their support and team organisation. We try and rotate the Team Captains so
that these duties are shared around so please consider this role for 2012 – it really
isn’t difficult!
I will be in contact with members during February regarding the 2012 Summer
Leagues and looking to establish Teams and Captains during March with help from
our coach Anthony. Our aim is to play enjoyable and competitive matches against
local clubs, and hopefully improve our league positions so let’s look forward to a fun
and successful summer.
We also entered a Ladies team into the Hot Rackets league and hope to have more
teams playing in this league this year.

CLUB TOURNAMENT 2012 - RULES
The Dellcott Family Club Tournament is an opportunity for all our members to enjoy a friendly competitive knockout event, which culminates on Finals Day. This
day is one of the highlights of the Club‘s year when all members, their families and
friends are welcome at the Club.
The following simple rules are designed to aid the smooth running of the competition. Players must complete the various rounds by the due dates.
Rules
1.
Matches are the best of three sets with tie-breaks applicable in all three sets
in the event of the score reaching six games all.
2.
It is the responsibility of both players and doubles pairings to make contact
ASAP with their opponents to maximise the amount of time available to fulfil
fixture. Please do not make arrangements to play matches after the date
given as the end of the round.
3.
If one of the players or doubles pairings are unable to fulfil the fixture in the
allotted time for whatever reason then their opponent(s) will be awarded a
walkover. The tournaments organisers must be notified.
4.
If neither player or both doubles pairings are unable to fulfil the fixture then
the result will be determined by a toss of a coin by the tournament organiser.
The tournament organisers must be notified.
5.
The day after the date given as the end of the round the tournament organisers will visit the club house and update the tournament progress sheet. They
will make the necessary arrangements to close the round.
6.
A notice of outstanding matches will be posted on the clubhouse outside notice board 1 week prior to the end of the round.
7.
The winners of matches are responsible for writing up the results on the draw
chart in the clubhouse immediately after the match is completed.
8.
If you cannot make Finals Day, please do not enter the competition.
9.
If, after entering, due to an exceptional circumstance, you learn you can no
longer make Finals Day, please withdraw your entry, letting the Organiser,
your next opponent(s) and, if appropriate, doubles partner know immediately.
10. In the event of a player withdrawing from the tournament, the Organiser will
decide who should go through to the next round. The Organiser will also have
the discretion to introduce a new doubles player if it is in the interest of the
tournament to do so.
11. In the event of a dispute, the Organiser‘s ruling, which may be made in consultation with Club Committee members, is final. Please help to make the
tournament run smoothly by organising and playing your matches within the
allotted time frame. We really want to avoid the fixture congestion that occurred last year.
