A Publication of the Pregnancy Resource Center of Salt Lake City *Laurie came to the PRC seeking a pregnancy test and ultrasound. Single and living at home with her mom, she had broken up with her boyfriend for one week, gone back to her ex-boyfriend and had sex. Confirming that she was pregnant, Laurie was hoping an ultrasound would help her determine who the father was. As our volunteer advocate counseled Laurie on all her options and explained fetal development, it was clear she was struggling. We offered her hope, support and resources to empower her, encouraging her that she could handle her pregnancy. During the ultrasound, based on the dates, it became clear that her current boyfriend, with whom she had reconciled, was not the father. Laurie was unsettled… what was she going to do? Our nurse counseled and encouraged her further, offering our support to walk through this pregnancy with her. A month later, after many attempts to reach Laurie, a follow-up phone call was made to see how she was doing. When Laurie answered the phone she said “I was just talking about you when you called!” Laurie had just told her current boyfriend a few minutes before our call that not only was she pregnant, but that he was not the father. VOLUME 16 ISSUE 1 SPRING/SUMMER 2015 Our Nurse Manager listened to Laurie’s fears and concerns. Her boyfriend was very upset and she was stressed and scared. Laurie listened as our nurse spoke about faith and trust, sharing about making right choices and that by telling the truth, the truth would set her free. The conversation ended by our letting Laurie know that we would continue to pray for her and her boyfriend. Six months passed with many unsuccessful attempts to reconnect with Laurie. Then, just a few weeks ago Laurie called the PRC to let us know she had given birth to a beautiful baby boy! Arrangements were made to bring him to the PRC for everyone to meet. When Laurie walked into the center she was glowing with joy! During the six months of silence, Laurie and her boyfriend struggled through his desire for a paternity test. In the end, he said it didn’t matter anymore… he wanted to be this precious baby’s father! Beaming from ear to ear, Laurie showed us her beautiful diamond ring. Her boyfriend had proposed at Christmas and they would be getting married soon. We praise the Lord that He has allowed us to continue life’s journey with Laurie and this new family as they go through our Life Steps parenting program. “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” Psalm 139:14 *To protect the identity of our clients, fictitious names were used. When Things Are Uncertain Rely on God Hi! I’m Anna, simply a girl honored by God in so many ways. One of them is by this opportunity to be a part of the Pregnancy Resource Center team. I come from a massive Russian family, I’m number 7 out of 15! (My momma had 10, then adopted five more.) We’ve always been Christian and I have always had an intimate relationship with Daddy God. Within the last five years, I’ve traveled a bit of Europe, served in an orphanage in India and counseled in a women’s drug and alcohol rehab center in Oregon. The last year and a half I spent serving the people of Mozambique, Africa. I picked up basic Portuguese there and hope to use it at the PRC, along with my Russian. I love God and I love people. My prayer is that His love, joy, and hope radiate through me! *Sasha came to the PRC after she learned she was pregnant, She was overwhelmed and scared. Afraid to talk to her mom due to major anger issues, Sasha asked her aunt (her mom’s sister) to come to the PRC with her. While meeting with one of our volunteer advocates, Sasha shared that she had recently split with her boyfriend and that he didn’t know about the pregnancy. Terrified to tell her mom and scared about bringing her aunt to the appointment, Sasha’s thoughts focused on abortion as the only solution. Our volunteer advocate lovingly counseled Sasha on all her options. And explained fetal development. As a young active LDS woman, Sasha was open to talking about faith and relying on God with our volunteer advocate. A Bible was given to her and she allowed us to pray for her. Thinking she was 13 weeks along, the ultrasound showed that she was only 7 weeks. Sasha cried when she saw her baby’s heartbeat. Her aunt expressed her desire to support Sasha any way she could and that the biggest hurdle would be dealing with Sasha’s mother. A few days later our volunteer advocate called Sasha to see how she was doing. She had told her parents and stated that they were still processing the news. Sasha has reconsidered her thoughts about abortion and is now considering adoption. *To protect the identity of our clients, fictitious names were used. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 Office Manager Sue Mirgon Volunteer Medical Director Dr. Fred (Rocky) Seale, MD, OB/GYN Nurse Manager Sara Jensen, RN, BSN Client Services Manager Rachelle Canada Nurse Stephanie Cable, RN, BSN Receptionist Anna Vasilenko Abstinence Leaders Karen Horwood Terri Kerr Post-Abortion Support Sue Gregory Laurie Jensen “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. This year these awesome young men and women helped the PRC with gardening, assembling office modular furniture and helping us catch up on clothes sorting. My time at the Pregnancy Resource Center has been life-changing, life-giving, and stretched me in ways I didn’t know were possible. As some of you may know, I am six months pregnant and my husband and I have been called to move to Lynchburg, Virginia to pursue his education of becoming a physician. After we have our baby boy this August and things settle down a bit in our new home, I plan to pursue more involvement in their local pregnancy center because God has certainly been growing my heart more and more for this ministry. I will also be pursuing my certification in counseling through the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors program. As my time here is coming to an end, I am very grateful that I was given this amazing opportunity. The Lord has revealed himself to me in so many ways and allowed me to experience things that only by His grace, I can understand. In these last few weeks, I have been able to see Rachelle take on this role with much compassion and eagerness to learn. I am confident that she will be a wonderful Client Services Manager. Thank you for all of your prayers and support during my time here at the PRC and now during this transition. My heart breaks to leave you all but I know that the Lord is doing amazing things through His ministry! Philippians 1:9-11 Looking for something to do that makes a difference?
