Mrs. Kristen Brown - Classroom Calendar December 2013 Mon 2 English I Students revisited the "Big Question": Is revenge ever justified? in their journals. Students then read and discussed a nonfiction article titled "The Story Behind the Mask of Amontillado." Students then answered follow-up questions related to both the article and Poe's short story. Students finished class today with the poet Ali reading aloud his award-winning poem, "Revenge." HW: Quiz tomorrow over "The Cask of Amontillado" and The Story Behind "The Cask of Amontillado." GT English Students turned in PATTR/Persuasive Appeals projects, acquired background info on Shakespeare and The Renaissance, and began explicating Shakespeare's "Sonnet 73." HW: Prepare for tomorrow's Classical Roots 8 quiz. Tues 3 English I Students took a reading check over "The Cask of Amontillado." HW: None. GT English Students finished explicating Shakespeare's "Sonnet 73" and took an open-note classical roots quiz over vocabulary and roots from Lesson 8. Students then worked together to complete Imagery Lesson #17. HW: None. Wed 4 English I Students peer graded yesterday's reading check and read/discussed Poe's "The Raven." Students began applying the SIFT analysis strategy to the poem. GT English Students engaged in an activity whereby they "acted out" iambic pentameter movements to a Shakespearean sonnet. Students then signed up for reading roles for Romeo and Juliet, as well as began reading the play. Thurs 5 English I Students visited the Library and discussed responding to a short response prompt. GT English Students visited the Library and participated in a read aloud of Romeo and Juliet. 1 HW: None. Tues 10 English I Students participated in a guided practice whereby they wrote a short response to a literary question. GT English Students took a test over Classical Roots lessons 7 & 8, and began an expository quick write. Wed 11 English I Students finished and turned in their crossover SAQ. Students then began an expository quickwrite. GT English I Students discussed and applied imagery in literature. Students then continued drafting their expository quickwrite. HW: Finish reading Romeo and Juliet, Act I. Also, expository papers will be due next Tuesday. Thurs 12 English I Students finished their expository quick writes from yesterday and began a new short response today. HW: Short responses due tomorrow. GT English I Students finished yesterday's quickwrite and began working on a figurative language organizer. Students then participated in a choral reading of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. HW: Expository papers due Tuesday, December 17th. Fri 13 English I Students turned in their short response for "Cask of Amontillado." Students then worked on their expository papers. HW: Expository papers are due Tuesday, December 17th. GT English I Students worked on their Romeo and Juliet Figurative Language Organizer, as well as expository papers. HW: Expository papers are due Tuesday, 12/17. Mon 16 English I 2 Students completed 9th grade superlative ballots, continued writing their expository papers, and pre-read Capote's "A Christmas Memory." HW: Finish your expository paper and place the forms in this order: 1) Rubric; 2) Revised Draft; 3) Rough draft w/minimum two students' revision marks; and 4) Quick Write on prompt sheet. GT English Students voted for 9th grade superlatives, and worked on their expository compositions. HW: Your expository paper is due tomorrow, paperclipped together in this order: 1) Rubric; 2) Revised Draft; 3) Rough Draft w/two students' revision marks; and 4) Quick Write on the prompt sheet. Tues 17 English I Students turned in their expository papers and finished pre-reading "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote. Students then read and discussed the story. HW: None. GT English Students turned in expository papers and swapped Shakespearean insults. Students then participated in a class reading of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. HW: R & J Figurative Language Graphic Organizer due tomorrow. Wed 18 English I Students finished reading and discussing Capote's "A Christmas Memory." Students then located imagery throughout the story. GT English Students turned in their graphic organizers and showed their extra credit Shakespearean insult name tags. Students then received a stage directions assignment (due 1/9/2014) and read and discussed Romeo and Juliet. HW: Optional Secret Santa gifts due tomorrow. Those participating will exchange gifts Friday. 3 Thurs 19 English I Students visited the Library, wrote a thesis statement for an expository paper, and began watching Capote's "A Christmas Memory." GT English I Students visited the Library and practiced Imagery #19. Students then received a homework assignment (Foundations lesson over active and passive voice.) HW: Active & Passive Foundations lesson due tomorrow. Fri 20 English I Students took an open book reading check over "A Christmas Memory," followed by watching a 1966 production of Capote's short story. HW: Keep reading and have a safe, fun, restful holiday break. : ) GT English I Students finished & turned in Active/Passive Voice Foundations homework, filed Benchmark papers, and read & discussed Romeo and Juliet. At the end of 2nd period, students voluntarily participated in their Secret Santa gift exchange.
