The past decade has seen the most sweeping changes in the legislation of the accounting profession since the Securities Act of 1933, including the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 and the formation of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (“PCAOB”). While much of the legislation is pointed specifically at public companies, the message in the media and the outcry from the public is resulting in a more codified set of standards that apply to all accountants - public and private. Today’s discussion will cover current developments in the existing Statements on Auditing Standards and PCAOB Standards as well as late breaking events regarding regulatory reform and other topics impacting corporate governance and accountants in public and private practice. Speaker: Jon Crumley, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP Updates from the Hill: Latest Developments from Congress and IRS Significant changes in oversight and regulation face public and private charities and foundations, including new IRS reporting requirements. This session will cover key focus areas and concerns of Congress and an update on key legislative actions under consideration. Speaker: BOB WEISS, Meadows Foundation What employers need to know about the proposed employee free choice act If the Employee Free Choice Act (“EFCA”), which was introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate on March 10, 2009, is approved and signed into legislation, it will represent one of the most significant amendments to the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”) since 1935. EFCA would materially change three substantive areas of the NLRA: (1) the method by which a union becomes certified as the representative for employees; (2) the process of collective bargaining between unions and employees; and (3) the penalties against employers for unfair labor practices. Bill Ashcraft will discuss how these changes will adversely impact employers and the actions employers should take now to protect themselves and their employees from the increased efforts at unionization that will occur if and when EFCA becomes law.
