Ball Greg Christianson Kelly Gallagher Carolyn Hines Ron L. Marek Jan Roberts-Dominguez The 2013-2014 school year will mark a milestone for Assistance League’s flagship philanthropic program, Operation School Bell. Sometime during the course of the year, we will spend our one millionth dollar providing clothing to children in our community! From the program’s inception in 1968, when we started with a budget of $500, to this school year, when we will raise and spend approximately $63,000, over 18,000 children will have been clothed by our chapter’s members. Our volunteer shoppers do an amazing job of stretching our resources by finding bargains on comfortable, fashionable clothing. How does Operation School Bell accomplish this? We work closely with Benton County schools to identify children who would benefit from the program. School personnel fax orders to our Chapter House, where clothing is carefully selected from our inventory to meet the needs of each child. Every student receives two pairs of jeans, two shirts, a sweatshirt, underwear, socks, a warm jacket, and a hygiene kit that includes soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other grooming supplies. In addition, they receive a voucher to select properly fitted shoes at a local store. We deliver a filled shopping bag for each child to their school for them to take home. Wanda Arp, Counselor at Garfield Elementary School in Corvallis, says, “Amazing care is taken by Assistance League volunteers when filling orders and providing for all of our families in need. Our students shine with their gifts of clothing.” We’re pleased that teachers often report a noticeable difference in students after they have received their new clothing. A teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Corvallis tells us of one boy who was so proud of his new clothes that he showed them off during “sharing” time, saying that it was the first time he had ever had new clothes and his very own new shoes. This year over 750 children will be able to take pride in their new clothing and feel better heading into the school day. Erin Prince, 509J District Superintendent, writes, “Assistance League is the torch that spreads light to so many children and families in our community. We are grateful for the compassion, service, and hope provided our students each year through the programs that ALC provides. With brand new clothing to keep them warm and improve their self-esteem, ALC graciously serves an increasing number of children in need of a helping hand. The Corvallis School District is touched by the outpouring of time and resources provided to our community by Assistance League.” This program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our many donors. Thank you so much for helping us improve the lives of children in our community! Caring and Commitment in Action How to Score Big! SAT Review provides classes twice each year for 200 high school students to help them prepare for the SAT. A Crescent Valley Councilor is quoted as saying that, “Their students report the SAT Classes are very helpful in that they provide instruction, information and practice that they would not receive otherwise.” She also noted that, “It is a very cost effective class for their students”. LOOKING GOOD! Operation School Bell® improves the school day for more than 700 local students each year by providing them with a shopping bag of new clothing, a warm jacket and a voucher for new shoes. Give Me a Hug! Our Hug-a-Bear program provides police, fire departments, and other Benton County agencies with teddy-bears to comfort children in traumatic situations. Brush Your Teeth! Dental Ed offers dental hygiene instruction to approximately 900 sixth grader with a hands-on classroom presentation. Make a difference in the life of a child. We Have You Covered! CARES (Clothing Assistance in Real Emergency Situations) provides clothing and small blankets to make Emergency Room patients comfortable for their return home. Clean = Healthy! Hygiene Help provides household and personal supplies for families in need. 2 “Assistance League CARES has provided quality clothing to Good Samaritan's Emergency Department for many years. They have been extremely helpful and we in the Emergency Department are very thankful for the Assistance League’s contributions that have helped so many. We are lucky to have such a tremendous organization as partners in helping us build a healthy community.” ~ Chris Boos Thank You, Benton County!
