Membership Meeting, 10 Feb 2015
Held the 1st Wednesday of the Month at 10:00
We had 44 members in attendance at the membership meeting this month. There
were a few announcements made that affect everyone in the Center. First, we will
NOT be going by the Lake Forrest School District closings anymore, because of their late decision
making and closing for other that weather reasons have made it impractical. If in doubt please call
the Center, if there is no answer we are closed. We are having a Wild Game Dinner on March 7. Get
your tickets early they sell fast. As always thank you our wonderful kitchen staff for the great meals
we receive everyday.
Have a Safe Month Mae
When March comes in gently, with soft skies of blue
And warm happy breezes and crocus buds too
March begins like a lamb, sweet gentle and kind
But you’d better beware for you’ll surely find
That the end of the month will be stormy and cold
Like a lion it’ll roar, rough, growly and bold
If March begins windy, and stormy and gray,
If it’s too cold outside, to happily play
The lion’s here first, and he’s not so nice
You should be indoors take my advice
But wonderful weather is coming they say
By the end of the month the lamb’s here to stay.

Spring Cleaning Safety
March 20th officially marked the start of Spring as the Sun passed over the earth’s equator. As the
weather starts to change many homeowners start to think about spring cleaning. Here are some safety
tips:
1. Do not rush because you are tired or in a hurry.
This is really the most basic spring cleaning safety tip, and all the other ones, at least to a certain degree,
stem from this one.
Spring cleaning can be tiring work. Do not forget safety even if you have worked hard all day and want
to get done.
The better thing to do when you are exhausted is to stop and take a break, drink a glass of water, sit
under a nice cool fan, and rest instead of being unsafe. (Continued on Page 13)

As our center grows, The Frederica Senior Center membership has doubled in the last two years,
meals served has tripled. We have expanded the
dining room, and guess what? We still need more
room. I am in the process of applying for capital
grants to expand our center. We hope to
expand out the rear of the building an additional
4000 square feet. The new addition would house
the billiard, exercise, game, ping pong rooms,
wood carving room, as well as restrooms, with
showers. We look forward to
expanding our center. Any contribution towards
our expansion would be appreciated. In the future
months we will be having many fundraisers to
support this expansion. Thank you to all our
members, volunteers and staff, for our wonderful
center. Renee

Spring Cleaning Safety (continued)
2. Be careful moving large pieces of furniture and appliances.
Use proper lifting technique, keeping you back straight and lifting with your legs.
Also, wear shoes when moving heavy items so you don't hurt your toes.
Finally, if you feel it is just too heavy and you can't find someone else to do it for you, just don't move it. It won't be the
end of the world to just clean around it.
Always have spring cleaning safety in mind.
3. Be safe while on ladders and step stools.
When doing a task, such as washing windows, where you need to be on a ladder use extreme caution.
Do not lean too far to either side. A good rule of thumb is that your belly button should not go beyond the sides of
the ladder.
Also, have someone available to hold the ladder steady for you if possible, and make sure before you step on them that
the rungs are not wet, and you are wearing non skid shoes.
4. Be careful when walking on wet surfaces.
This spring cleaning safety tip is really important every time you clean.
Everyone knows how easy it is to slip on a wet floor. Make sure you take the proper precautions to keep from falling.
Also, make sure others in your family, including children, are also warned of the wet floor to keep them safe.
You may need to block small children's access to wet floors because they just don't understand not to run and slide on
them.
5. Keep stairs, landings, and walkways clear of boxes, bags and other clutter.
Spring cleaning is a great time to de-clutter your home, but you need to make sure all the boxes and bags of stuff you
are getting rid of don't cause a safety concern.
Make sure you place them outside walkways and especially away from steps and stairs where someone may trip on
them.
6. Don't carry too much stuff at once, especially on stairs.
During spring cleaning you will also probably go up and down your stairs a lot carrying things if you live in a home with
stairs.
Make sure you keep a hand free to hold onto the stair railing.
Also, whether you have stairs or not, always make sure you can see over the load you are carrying so you do not trip.
7. Always follow cleaning product label safety instructions and recommendations.
Cleaning supplies can create nasty fumes, so make sure you get some fresh air by opening windows, turning on the exhaust fan, or placing a fan in the room.
In addition, do not mix ammonia and bleach together, both of which are common household cleaners, because they
create toxic fumes when combined.
When it doubt don't mix, just use one product to get the job done.
You should also wear rubber gloves to keep your hands from getting dry and cracked from the hot water and chemicals.
8. Wear a mask when cleaning dusty areas.
This may seem like overkill to some, but if you are at all allergic to dust this tip is very important.
9. Do not leave buckets filled with water around your home.
Even if you need to take a quick break make sure you empty that cleaning bucket, or at least put it in an inaccessible
area.
Even small amounts of water are a drowning hazard for small children.
10. Put away all your cleaning supplies when you are done.
When you finally finish your spring cleaning tasks for the day it is easy to say to yourself, "I'll put these away later," or "I
am just going to use these again tomorrow, so I'm keeping them out."
Cleaning supplies are an attractive nuisance for our children and pets, something inviting that they should definitely not
be getting into.
Put the cleaning products away in a childproof cabinet for your children's safety and well-being as soon as you are done
with them.
Follow these spring cleaning safety tips to have a safe and productive spring cleaning!

The Frederica Senior Center’s mission is to guide Delaware’s senior into a brighter future. The Center is where seniors
and or persons with disabilities join together for services, activities, socialization and nutritious home cooked meals.
Programs are designed to enhance our seniors dignity, support their independence and encourage involvement in and
with the Center and their local community.
This Membership Guidelines Booklet has been developed to enhance the experience of your participation in the Center
activities and programs. It is the Center’s priority to provide a safe, pleasant, positive, comfortable, enjoyable environment to our members.
The Center recognizes that some behaviors may distract and disrupt for the enjoyment of the Center. That is why the
following guidelines have been set up by the Board of Directors and Staff Members in order to address any instances
that may occur and disrupt the daily routine and experience at the Center.
We all ask that you carefully read this booklet to become familiar with these guidelines in order to know what is expected from each and every member of the Frederica Senior Center.
1. Membership is limited by the resources of the Center to individuals who are self mobile, with or without assistance
devices such as wheelchairs or walkers, independent, capable of appropriate decision making, self toileting and have
adequate appearance and hygiene to participate in daily activities. If not independent self mobile members may attend
with a personal assistant.
2. As a member we ask that you promote goodwill. No member shall mistreat, either verbally or physically, any other
member or staff. Mistreatment includes sexual, racial or otherwise harassing comments. Violence of any kind will not
be tolerated and shall result in immediate dismissal from the Center, and membership will be revoked immediately.
3. Members are asked to encourage diversity. Isolation of members based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin,
sexual orientation, and or physical or mental disability shall not be tolerated.
4. The use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted on or in Center property.
5. The rooms and equipment in the Center are for the use of the entire membership and are never for the exclusive use
of any one member. Members are expected to respect and maintain the facility and equipment they use. Members may
be liable for purposeful damage or destruction of any Center property. Use of equipment is at the users own risk.
6. Members are not to use any vulgar or profane language at any time.
7. If at any time a member has a problem of some kind, whether it be with another member, staff member, a program

member has the right to approach a guest or group of guests to voice their complaint. Complaining among other members will not get the situation resolved but will only bring disharmony into the Center.
8. Any criminal act committed by a member will result in immediate dismissal.
9. Inoculations must not be done in public areas, such as dining room, lobby or kitchen.
The purpose of these guidelines is to allow everyone to richly enjoy their visit to the Center every time they are here.
