Center for Academic Development and Assessment Fall 2012 THE SERIES OF LEARNING COMPETENCIES WORKSHOPS PATH TO ACHIEVEMENT Recognizing Strategies for Academic Achievement This presentation will help students recognize overall effective learning strategies to become confident and successful in college: forming short-term vs. long-term goals; distinguishing school priorities, and developing study habits. Writing a Research Paper Students will be able to distinguish the difference between inductive paragraph vs. deductive paragraph. The presentation will demonstrate effective planning process and research skills to write a research paper according to MLA and APA styles. Organizing Time Effectively and Enhancing Study Skills Students will recognize effective time management and study skills; they will be able to distinguish between quotidian, weekly, and monthly calendars to highlight key components and important dates to plan and become more organized. Bringing Note Taking and College Reading Skills Into Action The three-step process of note-taking and the importance of being a dynamic reader will be demonstrated. Acquainted with the Cornell Note-Taking system and the SQ3R method, students will practice effective note taking and active reading skills to become a keen observer, listener and reader. Recognizing the Benefits of Memory and Learning Styles This presentation will focus on helping students distinguish three stages of memory and their capacities and limitations. Students will highlight effective memory strategies, mnemonic devices, and their dominant learning style(s). Facing Test Anxiety and Applying Test Taking Strategies The student will be able to recognize the importance of being focused and alert to perform to the best of their abilities. Students will be able to distinguish between objective and subjective tests to become prepared for the exams. We ask students to: • Bring a valid Montclair State University ID card to present it to a Workshop’s facilitator; • Arrive 5 minutes prior to the beginning of each Workshop; • Attend the entire presentation to get the full benefits of the Workshop. In addition to tutoring, testing and academic support services, the Center for Academic Development and Assessment (CADA) offers Learning Competencies Workshops to Montclair State University students.
