GAUGE:
9 1/2 stitches = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Scarf pattern.
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and
the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the
pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person
to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size
hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Making a Gauge Swatch
STITCH EXPLANATION:
yo (yarn over) An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles. 2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the
next st as instructed.
Dropping yarn over wraps
On Row 3, you’ll be dropping the yarn over wraps. This is easy! Knit the first stitch on your left hand needle
as usual. The next loop on your left hand needle will be the yarn over wrap. With your finger, gently draw
the wrap off the tip of your left hand needle and just allow it to drop – that’s all there is to it.
Since this was a wrap and not an actual stitch, your knitting will not unravel.
SCARF
Before beginning to knit, measure and then cut about 17 1/2 yd. (16 m) of yarn and set aside. You'll use this yarn later
for making fringe.
Cast on 13 stitches.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Knit 1, *yo, knit 1; rep from * to end of row – at the end of Row 2 you'll have your original 13 stitches + 12 yarn
over wraps on your needle.
Row 3: Knit all stitches, dropping the yarn over wraps as you come to them – at the end of Row 3 you'll have 13 stitches
on your needle.
Rep Rows 13 until you have about 1 yd.(1 m) of yarn remaining, end with a Row 1 as the last row you work.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Weave in yarn ends.
Fringe
For each fringe, cut four 11 in. (28 cm) strands of yarn.
Hold all 4 strands of yarn together and fold in half. Using your fingers or a crochet hook, draw fold through edge of Scarf,
forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Make 7 fringes along each end of Scarf. Trim fringe
ends evenly.
