Depart from Newark airport for on an overnight flight to Lisbon. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board. Sep. 25 – DAY 2: LISBON – SANTAREM – FATIMA Upon arrival in Lisbon we are greeted by Select International’s English speaking tour manager who will accompany the group during the entire pilgrimage. Our first stop is the beautiful church of St. Anthony of Lisbon, built atop the home of Portugal’s most beloved saint, also known as St. Anthony of Padua. Then we walk over next door to the Lisbon Cathedral, the Se, which means the seat in Portuguese, appropriately named as the Cathedral holds the seat of the Bishop. Our tour includes a visit to St. Jerome’s Monastery, the Belem Tower, Discoveries Monument and across the water the beautiful National Shrine of Christ the King Statue which overlooks the city. We enjoy lunch at Pasteis de Belem, known for their one of a kind custard tarts, made using a recipe which dates to 1800’s when Monks made these wonderful delicacies. In the afternoon we depart for the ancient city of Santarem, where we visit the Church of the Holy Miracle, containing the oldest recorded Eucharistic miracle. This miracle has been on continuous display since 1269 A.D. We celebrate Mass at the Church. Afterward we’ll make our way to Fatima for an overnight. (L,D,) Sep. 26 - Day 3: FATIMA Jubilee Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions Today we are at the Shrine of Fatima, built atop what was once the Cova da Iria, where, 100 years ago, the three shepherds fed their flocks and met the Virgin Mary. We’ll celebrate Mass in the newly renovated Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima and visit the graves of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. We visit the Chapel of Apparitions, built atop the site of the Holm Oak Tree upon which the Virgin Mary stood when she met the children and light the biggest candles you have ever seen as we offer up our prayers to the Mother of God. We also see the newer Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, pray before a piece of the Berlin Wall and do some souvenir shopping. Tonight we attend the Blessing of the Sick. Overnight in Fatima. (B,D,) Sep. 27 – Day 4: FATIMA – NAZARE We take a short trip to Aljustrel to see the homes of the three shepherds, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. We pray the Stations of the Cross as we walk the Via Sacra, passing by the Loco do Anjo, where the Angel of Peace met the three children and though them how to pray and the site of Our Lady’s 4th apparition on August 19, 2017, away from the Cova da Iria. In the afternoon we visit the local seaside fishing village of Nazaré where we see the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Nazaré and enjoy a wonderful lunch. (lunch on your own). Return to Fatima for time at leisure. Mass is celebrated in Fatima. Later in the evening we join the historic and moving Candlelight Procession. Overnight Fatima. (B,D,) Sep. 28 – Day 5: PORTO – RIBEIRA – BRAGA After breakfast we board our motorcoach and head for Porto and on to Ribeira where we have lunch and port wine tasting. After lunch we travel to Braga where we celebrate Mass and see the spectacular Shrine of Our Lady of Sameiro, the country’s second largest shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. We also stop to see the Shrine of the Blessed Alexandrina of Balasar who was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 2004. Overnight in Braga. (B,L,D,) Sep. 29 – Day 6: PONTEVEDRA – SANTIAGO de COMPOSTELA After breakfast at the hotel we travel to Pontevedra where you see the magnificent Cathedral. We board our motorcoach and continue to our destination Santiago De Compostela. The Way to Santiago has for centuries been connected to culture, knowledge and information. Because of its influence on literature and art, Compostela, along with Rome or Jerusalem, became a major pilgrimage destination. In the afternoon we will visit to the city of Santiago: Obradoiro Square, Fonseca Palace, Gelmirez Palace, Franco Street and the Cathedral. Access to the Doorway of Glory is via the Obradoiro façade. Inside the Cathedral we perform time honored traditions: the important and meaningful one is to hug to the Saint, go under the main altar and visit the crypt where the relics of St. James are preserved. We will take a look at the Pallozas, the traditional round stone houses with thatched roofs that the people of this area used as their homes. We continue on to Salamanca, Spain’s most famous university city. While here we see the famous” Roman Bridge” and the grand expansive Plaza Mayor. Of course, we have to stop in to see the “old” and “new” Cathedral and what is considered to be Salamanca’s most beautiful cloister in the Convent de lass Deans with capitals wildly carved with human heads and skulls. Not to be missed is the breathtaking shell Cathedral. Celebrate Mass in Salamanca. Overnight in Salamanca. (B,D,) Oct. 1 – Day 8: ALBA DE TORMES – AVILA – MADRID After breakfast we depart for the quaint village of Alba de Tormes to celebrate Mass at the Carmelite Monastery, where Saint Teresa died in 1582 A.D. and is buried. In the little museum of the Carmelite Monastery we will be able to see the incorrupt heart and left arm of the St. Teresa. In the afternoon we arrive in Avila the perfectly preserved eleventh-century walled city, home of the mystic writer Santa Teresa, who was born here and whose shrines are a must see for all Catholic pilgrims! Ávila’s atmosphere has changed very little since the days of Santa Teresa, the first woman to be named a Doctor of the Church, to whom the city is dedicated. During our tour of Ávila, we will see the Cathedral and San Vicente church. We will visit the Incarnation Convent, La Santa Monastery, built on the site of the house where she was born, and San José Convent, the first monastery founded by the Saint. Overnight in Madrid. (B,D,) Oct. 2 – Day 9: MADRID This morning we celebrate Mass followed by a city tour. After the guided tour of Madrid, we have time at leisure to explore the city on our own. The great trio of museums: The Prado (one of the oldest and greatest collections of art in the world: Bosch, Velazquez, Goya, Titian, El Greco, etc), Thyssen Bornemisza (like a walking through the history of the painting) and Reina Sofía (permanent gallery of modern Spanish art: Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Tapies, Chillida, etc); are all found along the Paseo del Prado.
