We don’t just build
homes and businesses; we
create communities, jobs
and economic opportunities
for all GTA residents.
The Canadian Home
Builders’ Association released its annual report outlining the economic impact
of building, development
and home renovation across
Canada. I had the opportun-
ity to review this report
last week and I’m happy to
report that our industry continues to be a key contributor to growth and prosperity
across our vibrant region.
Our industry employs
a diverse group of professionals, each of whom plays
an integral part in building
quality, complete communities that people can afford
to purchase.
If you are reading this
column on a bus or subway,
I encourage you to look
around you. There is a good
chance that at least one of
the people sitting next to or
across from you is employed
by our industry. I’m not just
talking about the skilled
tradespeople that you see
working on construction
sites. I’m also referring
to the lawyers, planners,
designers and architects
who work on the develop-
ment years before it breaks
ground.
There were more than
207,400 jobs across the GTA
last year involved in residential and non-residential
construction, according to
Statistics Canada’s labour
force survey. The construction figure represents 6.3
per cent of jobs across all
sectors in the region, tying
the industry high over the
last decade.
Residential construction
generated $9.7 billion in
wages, including $5.4 billion
in residential renovations
alone.
These salaries are then
used to purchase groceries,
clothing, cars and a number
of additional products that
support local businesses.
These purchases are all
contributions to the local
economy and continue to
move our region forward.
