Students will place the matching tile in the tray, under its illustration. When students have found the homophones for both sets of homophone pairs, they can flip the activity card over to check their answers. The correct homophones are shown on back. Using Your Vocabulary Center Meeting Individual Needs Your vocabulary center comes with a handy storage box that keeps the materials organized and at students’ fingertips. Place the activity cards in the section on top, then place one set of color-coded word tiles in each of the sections below. Set the whole box in your learning center, along with the 4 plastic activity trays, and you’re ready to go! The center includes 30 activity cards divided into 3 different skills: synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. Before letting students use the center independently, model how to complete one or two cards. Show students how to choose an activity card and place it in the groove along the top of a matching, colorcoded tray. Point out that the word tiles for this card also match the color of the boxes on the card. For example, if students choose a synonym activity card that has blue word boxes, they will pick from the blue word tiles. Using the Synonym Cards Each synonym activity card has five different words on the front. (continued on back) ELL Pre-teach the skills covered in the set. Read aloud all of the words included in the set. When possible, provide students with illustrations to demonstrate each skill. For example, when teaching antonyms, you might show illustrations of “hot” and “cold,” “big” and “small,” and so on. Reteach/Extra Support Allow students to work in pairs to complete the activities. Provide a ring of index cards with words and illustrations for students to use as a reference. For example, for antonyms, you might provide a picture of ice and the word “cold” on one side, and a picture of fire and the word “hot” on the other. Challenge Encourage students to think of more synonyms, antonyms, and homophones that are not covered in the set. Provide students with pre-cut, blank strips of paper and small, square index cards to create additional activity cards and tiles. © 2008 Lakeshore (800) 428-4414 www.lakeshorelearning.com LL903 Ages 6+ Printed in China Designed to meet these objectives: Language • Students will identify synonyms and antonyms. • Students will recognize and identify homophones.
