A Church Family—Part 3:
Duties and Responsibilities
J
ust as in a family, in the Church family, we also
have duties and responsibilities. It is when we all pay
attention to our duties and responsibilities that we form a
happy Church family. We have to respect each other’s role.
In a family, the father, mother, children, grandparents, uncles, and aunts have specific
roles. Similarly, in the Church, too, we have the pastor, priests, deacons, acolytes,
lectors, ministers, sacristans, greeters, and the faithful. All of us have a role to play. It
is when we respect each other’s role and collaborate that we build communities.
When a member of a family does not play the role expected of him/her, the rest of the
members suffer and have to make up for it. For example, if the father/mother of the
family is an alcoholic, spends most of his/her money on that and comes home drunk
most of the days, the rest of the family will suffer. If a child in the family is rebellious
and does not follow the instructions of the parents, everyone in the family will feel its
impact. It is true of a Church family as well. When we do not play the unique role
we are called to play as members of the Church family, it is hard on the rest of the
Church, and others have to make up for it. We all have to contribute our share—our
might—whether it is time, talent, or treasure. We are called to be good stewards.
No one else can do the unique works you are called to do for the Church. Your
contribution is unique, and no one else can do what you do. Let us make our Church
a family where everyone is respected, loved, and appreciated.
—Father Jose

Fr. Joseph’s Corner . . .
“A Glass of Milk”
By Manuel Rojas
ONE DAY A poor boy, who was selling
goods from door to door to pay his
way through school, found that he had
only one thin dime left, and he was
hungry. He decided he would ask for
a meal at the next house. However, he
lost his nerve when a lovely young
woman opened the door. Instead of a
meal, he asked for a drink of water.
She thought he looked hungry, so she
brought him a large glass of milk.
The boy drank it slowly and then he asked, “How
much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “I was
taught never to accept pay for a kindness.”
The boy said, “Then I thank you from the bottom
of my heart.”
As the boy, Howard Kelly, left that house, he not
only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and
man was strong, too. He had been ready to give up
and quit.
Years later, that young woman became critically
ill. The local doctors were baffled, and so they finally
sent her to the big city, where specialists were called
in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was
also called in for a consultation. When he heard the
name of the town she came from, a
strange light filled his eyes. He immediately rose and went down the hall of
the hospital to her room. Dressed in
his doctor’s gown, he went in to see
her and recognized her at once. He
went back to the consultation room
determined to do his best to save her
life. From that day on, he gave special
attention to her case. And after a long
struggle, the battle was finally won!
Dr. Kelly then requested that the business office
pass her final hospital bill on to him for his approval.
He looked at it and wrote something in the margin.
The bill was then sent to her room.
The woman feared to open it, because she was
sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.
When she finally looked at it, something caught her
attention on the edge of the bill. She read these words:
“Paid in full with one glass of milk.”
(Signed)
Dr. Howard Kelly
Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart
prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread
abroad through human hearts and hands.”
—Prayerful wishes, Fr. Joseph

ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE
Celebrating 80 Years: 8/26–8/28
JOIN US AT A NO-HOST GATHERING
to begin the celebration on Friday,
Tiffany Miller and her five children, from a year old to 15
years old, came to this country three months ago, fleeing
the violence in the Bahamas after the kids lost their dad,
and she lost her ex-husband and fiancé.
The family is working through an immigration
attorney to get their legal status changed from “visitors”
to “permanent residents.” Meanwhile, they URGENTLY
need a place to stay. The kids also need help to get into
St. Francis School in September.
If anyone can help in any way, please call me at the
Parish Offices at: (541) 382-3631, or send me an email at:
[email protected]. It would be a great act of
kindness in this Jubilee Year of Mercy! Please keep this
family in your prayers.
—Thank you, Father Jose

New Bible Study Group
Being Catholic takes more than simply
believing in God or doing what He
asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more
than just a believer—He wants you to
be His disciple and friend!
To help you answer this call for a
deeper friendship with Christ, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church will begin a new Bible Study, Follow Me: Meeting
Jesus in the Gospel of John, by Edward Sri, on Tuesday,
September 13th, with a choice of either the morning
session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or the evening session from
6:30 to 8 p.m.
For more information or to register for this new study,
please visit: Stfrancisbend.org or contact Daniel Gutierrez,
Director of Faith Formation, at (541) 382-3631 or send an
email to him at: [email protected].
You will not only benefit personally from being part of
this study, you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a
parish as we grow closer to Christ together.
