Battle of Great Bridge Celebration 2013
4th Annual Waterways Heritage Festival
The Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution will again celebrate the
amazing and complete victory of our American patriots at the December 09, 1775, Battle of Great
Bridge. These national patriotic organizations recognize the strategic importance of this engagement and send
representatives from a number of states and from throughout Virginia to remember those who fought. The event
hosts are Norfolk Chapter SAR, Great Bridge Chapter DAR, Culpeper Minutemen Chapter SAR, Virginia
Society SAR, Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation, and the City of Chesapeake.
The formal SAR/DAR ceremony is Saturday, December 07 at 11:00 am at the DAR monument in Battlefield
Historic Park. At this combined 60th Annual Great Bridge Chapter NSDAR Wreath Laying and 3rd Annual
NSSAR Celebration, NSSAR National President General Joe Dooley will make a brief address. Mayor Alan
Krasnoff will read the City of Chesapeake's proclamation of December 07, 2013, as Battle of Great Bridge
Observance Day. Music, musket volleys & cannon firings, and parading of the SAR color guard will make for a
lively celebration that should conclude at noon.
Submitted by Dr. J. Thomas Whetstone, President, Norfolk Chapter SAR
As one of the City of Chesapeake’s 50th Anniversary Signature Events, families gathered to learn about Chesapeake’s rich
waterways heritage and the many skills, arts, and crafts needed to survive and flourish during the 18th century.
Summer Internships
Maxine Sledge (15, Hickory High School) and Henry Hull (16,
Grassfield High School) dedicated time weekly during their summer to
volunteer in the Foundation office. Maxine helped organize office files
while Henry wrote historical fiction stories. We are delighted when local
youth show interest in our project, and Maxine couldn’t have said it better:
“the Battle of Great Bridge really stands for something here. There’s
major history in Virginia, and I think it’s important to keep it on the
community’s mind.” She went on to encourage young people to learn
more about where they live.
Charitable Donations from IRAs for 2013
The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) extended the qualified charitable distribution (QCD)
provisions for 2012 and 2013.
The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) extended tax-free charitable contributions from IRAs
through 2013. The IRS has provided guidance (on its Retirement Plans webpage) on how the extension applies to
2012/13 qualified charitable distributions (QCDs).
A QCD is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (other than an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA) owned
by an individual who is age 70½ or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity. An IRA owner
can exclude from gross income up to $100,000 of a QCD made for a year, and a QCD can be used to satisfy any
IRA required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year. Also, the amount of a QCD excluded from gross
income is not taken into account in determining any deduction for charitable contributions. (See Notice 2007-7,
Section IX, for additional information on QCDs.)
Please consult with your financial advisor and CPA prior to making this distribution this year. The American
Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) extended the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) provisions for 2012
and 2013.

FALL 2013
Even the rain did not put a damper on the 4th Annual Waterways Heritage Festival! Families
came out to enjoy the many vendors and artisans from all different parts of the Commonwealth
showcasing their traditional skill sets. This year, the Foundation was honored to host two historic
Batteaus on static display while the Batteau and Canal Society members
taught children the history of water transportation. Captain Jim Canterbury
provided free boat rides through the locks (pictured right), and docents
provided guided tours of Battlefield Historic Park. The Chesapeake Fire
Department, along with CERT, again provided our free shuttle service. New
this year was our Pink Fire Truck and Fire Boat for display and
demonstrations. Children learned how to make cornhusk dolls from local girl
scouts, and elementary and middle school students participated in a
Scavenger Hunt Quiz to enter a raffle to win a pizza party for their classroom
courtesy of Spaghetti Eddie’s (pictured left: winner Kylie Sawyer and Robert
Sander, Principal, Grassfield Elementary School). Those in attendance were
entertained by Dulcimer expert Bert Berry; Charles Murla on the fiddle; Oscar Smith High
School’s Strolling Strings, directed by their teacher musician Deanna Kringel; the amazing Bob
Zentz (pictured above), and so many more. Also pictured right is President of the Foundation
and former Mayor of Chesapeake, Dr. William E. Ward presenting Lady Slipper Batteau
Captain Terry Zimmerman and Author of the children’s book, Rescue of the Lady Slipper Gail
Timberlake with a special Battle of Great Bridge 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin.
Mark your calendar to join us at next year’s festival October 11 & 12, 2014!!
A Special Thank You to the Beazley Foundation
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Beazley Foundation for the incredibly generous Capital
Campaign Contribution. We at the Foundation are working very hard to make the Battlefield Historic Park &
Visitor Center a reality for all to learn about the earliest days of our nation, and it is with the continued support of
friends like the Beazley Foundation that brings us one step closer to the completion of this crucial project.
