This coming week our Church will initiate a Jubilee Year
of Mercy. The word “jubilee” in the Old Testament is
from the Hebrew word meaning “a ram’s horn,
trumpet.” If someone announced the Jubilee, they would
be actually blowing a trumpet so that all of Israel would
be able to hear the decree. The decree of the Church is
that God’s justice and mercy is not limited, but without
limit. The Church proclaims this as Christ’s Good News
to the entire world.
The Church, the people of God, can, like our first reading,
“take off our robes of mourning and misery and put on the
splendor of glory from God…” The splendor we put on is
our joy in God’s rich and full mercy. We must be a
people of mercy, for when we are merciful our actions
point to God’s glorious splendor. In this way, what we do
really does matter since it reflects God. Hearts filled with
God’s joyful love give. Blessed Mother Teresa once
wrote that “intense love does not measure, it just gives.”
Mercy is other-centered, not self-centered. We live mercy
in community, not alone. Mercy is about pardon and
forgiveness. We learn more deeply by being engaged in
community. Not just with our selected family and
friends…but in real God-centered community where we
are tested and tried. We learn from one another what it
means to be good and just. Communion brings about our
merciful community, where we join one another in our
good times and in our bad. Stand united in the Body of
Christ, rejoicing in his mercy and seeking to serve the
needs of one another. Remember that joyful love gives
before it measures because we have already received the
greatest gift of love of all: the Incarnation who sacrificed
his life so that we might live in God’s glorious splendor.
God Bless,

The Immaculate Conception
of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
(December 8)
The Catholic Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin
Mary on Tuesday December 8th. It is a holy day of obligation.
What does ‘Immaculate Conception’ mean? It means that the Blessed Virgin
Mary, from the first instant of her conception in the womb of Saint Anne, was preserved from all stain of original sin. We learn the names of Mary’s parents, Anne
and Joachim, from The Protoevangelium of James, an early Christian writing dating to around 150 A.D.
Due to the disobedience of Adam and Eve, the original holiness they received from
God was lost and human nature wounded by sin. This deprivation of holiness affected not only Adam but all mankind. It is called “original sin” [see CCC 416417]. In Baptism, the stain of original sin is removed and the soul is filled with
sanctifying grace.
However, in Mary there was none of this stain of sin from her conception! Although not explicitly stated in The Bible, this ancient and widespread belief has been consistently held by the Church from its infancy.
This belief was proclaimed as dogma by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854. In the formal document Ineffabillis
Deus the Pope did: “… declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin
Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of
the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful.” The full document is
very worth reading and is available at http://www.newadvent.org/library/docs_pi09id.htm.
A few years after Pope Pius made this proclamation, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes, France to a young
uneducated French girl named Bernadette Soubirous. The date was March 25, 1858, the Feast of the Annunciation.
After praying the Rosary with Bernadette and in response to the visionary’s questions, “Madame, will you be so kind
as to tell me who you are?” Mary most holy “… opened her arms … then she rejoined her hands … and delivered
her secret: ‘I am the Immaculate Conception.’”
Upon hearing these words, the young visionary immediately ran to see the parish priest, repeating continuously the
words she did not understand -- words that troubled the priest when he heard them. Bernadette was not aware of the
fact that this theological expression had been assigned to the Blessed Virgin just four years earlier. See Saint Bernadette Soubirous 1844- 1879 by Father Ambrose Ryan O.F.M., PAGE 12, Canisius Press, 1999, and http://en.lourdesfrance.org/deepen/bernadette-soubirous/the-apparitions.
One can only imagine Pope Pius’ joy when he received the report of this.
And the Bishops of the United States must have beamed with happiness upon reading the words spokened by our
Blessed Mother. Just a few years before, in 1846, they had decreed the “Blessed Virgin Mary, conceived without
sin, as the Patroness of the United States of America.” See https://www.ewtn.com/library/HOMELIBR/

TUESDAY MORNING SCRIPTURE STUDY
NEW PROGRAM
Psalms: The School of Prayer
At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, hymns from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit
inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself and our Blessed Mother prayed them. These sacred
hymns become our heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with our Lord.
Program leaders Jeff Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray will show each of us how to establish a deeply personal dialogue with God through the Psalms, using individual study guides and DVD
lectures.
We invite you to join our study group for Psalms: The School of Prayer beginning January 2016. We meet
in the Event Center, Room 20, from 9:15am to 11:15am each Tuesday. Donation for materials is $25.00.

A Filipino Christmas Tradition at Sts. Simon and Jude
Catholic Parish
Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 7:00 PM
"Simbang Gabi" begins on December 16 and ends on the midnight mass
of the 24th of December. It is a Filipino Christmas tradition, also known
by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de Gallo, or ``mass of the
rooster.” This tradition was introduced by the Spanish friars as a practical
compromise for farmers, who began work before the crack of dawn to
avoid the noonday heat out in the fields. In the olden days, the church
bells start ringing as early as three o'clock followed by the roosters
crowing to wake people up so they can get ready for the Mass. Most
people believe that if one completes the nine day novena of dawn
masses, wishes will be granted.
Churches are adorned with star-shaped lanterns, called paról from the
Spanish farol, meaning "lantern" or "lamp." These lanterns represent the
Star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi. It is also believed to have
originally been used by worshippers to light their way to church in the
early morning. In addition, the nativity scene or "Belen" is displayed at
the sanctuary in the anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. It shows
Baby Jesus in a manger surrounded by Mother Mary, Saint Joseph,
shepherds with their flock, some stable animals, and the three wise men
carrying their gifts.
Native delicacies, tea and coffee awaits the church-goers outside the
church. The air is filled by the aroma coming from the food stalls as you
watch the women concoct their all-time favorites for the worshippers to
eat before they start the day.
In the early seventies, many Filipino communities in the United States particularly in California, where
there is a dense Filipino population, introduced the celebration of Simbang Gabi. The goal was to
educate the younger generation so they can continue to carry out the tradition. Two major changes
have been made over the years: celebrating the Mass around 7 - 8 in the evening in order to
accommodate the needs of the community who have different work schedules and nine (9) different
parishes within the local community hosting each day’s Mass.
The celebration usually starts with the choir playing a repertoire of Christmas carols in Tagalog and
English while preparing for the Mass. A few Filipino songs and psalms are entwined throughout the mass
to provide the continuity of cultural worship and the feeling of being “home.” Often times the men and
women don their full regalia of embroidered kimono, saya and barong Tagalog; imported from the
Philippines. And as tradition has it, delicacies are served to the worshippers after Mass, only to be
outdone by a full spread of native dishes including adobo, pancit, lumpia, lechon and many more. It is
not uncommon to be entertained by a rondalla serenading each table while dining or watching a live
folk-dance or a children’s enactment of the birth of Jesus. The evening ends with “Ang Pasko Ay
Sumapit” sung by all.
