6PM Darwin Time – PROVISIONAL RESULTS END OF DAY 3
IT’S ALL DOUBLE DUTCH IN THE BATTLE FOR THE LEAD
Day 3 in the ultimate endurance event that is the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge saw sparks of
rivalry fly as the two Dutch teams travelled nose to tail for nearly 700 kilometres along the Stuart
Highway. Team Twente in ‘Red One’ have never won the Challenge. The Nuon Solar Team are no
strangers to the winners’ circle having won a total of five times including last event in 2013. Twente
are clearly hoping it’s their turn to shine. Both teams have to contend with the ever-present threat
from Team Michigan in their speed machine ‘Aurum’ who are still just minutes behind.
Team Twente is now camped 35 kilometres from Coober Pedy.
None of the leaders can afford to sleep too easy, with Team Tokai from Japan, who despite incurring
a 15 minute penalty in Kulgera, are now around 20 kilometres behind Michigan. Punch Powertrain
who also had their wings clipped with a one hour penalty in Kulgera have managed to maintain 5th
position.
Earlier today the solar cars of the future cruised into the mandatory overnight stop of Alice Springs
with team Kogakuin in ‘Owl’ the first to arrive at 11.17 am Darwin time followed by team Eindhoven
at 12.01 in ‘Stella Lux’, claiming a record for the first solar family car to drive 1500 kilometres on a
single charge at normal speeds. This achievement signifying the age of practical solar cars is here.
Germany’s HS Bochum in ‘SunRiser’ arrived at the stop at 4pm, with the KGHM Lodz team from
Poland in ‘Eagle One’ arriving 11 minutes later. Australia’s Uni NSW Sunswift team just made it in by
close of day in their sports coupe, eVe.
A full update will be available after Day 3 of the Challenge concludes at 5pm Darwin time.
