English 12 AP
2017
Ms. Grondolsky
Allusions & Catch-22 Syllabus
SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: The study of the contemporary novel Catch-22 will focus on Heller’s use of humor
and satire (comparing his style with other satires that we have read, Pride and Prejudice in particular), achronological time line, and use of allusions.
DAILY LEARNING TARGETS: All daily activities and assignments support the following AP English skills and goals: close reading and
critical analysis of literature. Students are working to improve their understanding of the ways in which writers use language to provide
meaning for readers. Students consider the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, tone, etc. in support of structure, style, and
theme. Chapter 8 in Sound and Sense places a particular emphasis on allusion.
