Theboat loatbeganin2009.Studentshavehadablastraisingenvironmentalawarenessofplasticwasteproblems,
especiallyasitentersaquaticecosystemsandhavemadeapermanenthealthyandwastereducingimprovementto
ourhighschool,WaiteElementary,andthepublicrestroomonthesquarewithourbottle illingstations.Rightnow
wehavesaved80,000bottlesworthandcounting!
TheJunkBoatFloatwilltakeplaceonTuesday,September20thandForestMeadow’sLake.This
year’sthemeisSpiritoftheAmazon.Eachteampaysanentryfeeof$36whichgoestowards
purchasingabottle illingstationwaterfountain.ThisyearwehopetoputoneatFenn
Elementary.

Agroupof19fromMedinaHighSchoolembarkedonanadventuretotheAmazonBasininEcuadorfortendays
inJune,2016.StudentCouncilAdvisorandSpanishteacherLauraCalaiacovoorganizedtheservicetripandwas
assistedbySpanishteacherSharonSchorr.ThegroupexploredthehistoricaldistrictinthecapitalcityofQuito
aswellastheequatorbeforeheadingtotheAmazonBasin.Heretheybuiltthefoundationforanewschool
buildinginthecommunityofHatunHurco.Thekidsworkedhardcollectingriverrocks,shovelinggraveland
mixingandpouringcementtobuildthefoundationofthebuildingandsidewalksurroundingthenewthree‐
roomschoolhouse.Theyhadtheopportunitytomeetandminglewiththechildrenwhowouldbene itfromthe
newschoolwhiletheyplayedsoccerandpracticedtheirSpanish.
Whilethemorningsconsistedofphysicallabor,mostafternoonsinvolvedculturalexcursionsandlearningabout
lifeinEcuador.Thegroupvisitedacocoabeanfarmandroastedthebeansandmadetheirownchocolate,tried
manynewfoodsatarainforestfruitfarm,didadayhikeandanighthiketolearnabouttheplantsandanimals
oftheAmazon,tookacookingclassandtriedsomecrazyfoodslikepricklynettlesandgrubs,andobserveda
traditionaldanceprogramofthenativesofEcuador.Eveningsconsistedofparticipationinleadershipmodules
presentedbytheMetoWeandFreetheChildrenFoundations.Thestudentshadin‐depthdiscussionsonleader‐
shipstyles,governmentandsocialjusticeissues.
Thestudentshadagreattimewhileexploringanewcountryandgivingbacktomakeadifferenceinacommuni‐
ty.Theylearnedthevalueofcleanwater,conservation,savingtherainforest,andnottakingwhatwehavehere
forgranted.Thistripwasanadventureoflifetimeforthestudents!

tourofItalyfromMay31toJune9.ThetravelersincludedEricBrown,MichaelFox,Sydney
Hill,ThomasMcGrath,JosephObermeier,Jr.,JuliaReedy,AddieSchneider,AdamUsherand
LoganUsher.AdulttravelersincludedJudyDelahoyde,JulieLee,JosephObermeier,Sr.and
groupleaderLatinteacherAmySawan.TheMedinagroupjoinedthreeothergroupsfrom
Kansas,AlabamaandNewMexicoontheGrandTourofItalyofferedbyEFEducational
tours.ThewonderfultourdirectorassignedbyEFwasOda,whileFelicewasoursuper‐
skilledbusdriver.
Thegroup lewintoMilanthenmadetheirwaytoVeronatothecitycenterwhichstillboastsandancientRomanarena(amin‐
iatureoftheColosseumfoundinRome).Inaddition,thestudentshadanopportunitytoseeJuliet’sbalconyintheoldcity.The
followingday,theytraveledtoVenice—acityofcanalsinsteadofstreets.There,theyweretreatedtoaglassblowingdemon‐
stration,followedbyaguidedtouroftheDoges’palacelearningaboutthelonganddistinguishedhistoryoftheSerenissima
Republicawhenitwastheworld’s inancialcapitol.Intheafternoonthetravelersgottheirveryowngondolaride!Theyalso
hadtimeto“getlost”wanderingthroughthestreetsandexploringoverthe128bridgesinthecity.
ThenextstopwasFlorencewherethetravelersenjoyedawalkingtourfollowedbyaleatherfactorycraftingdemonstration.
TheyalsohadachancetoenjoyaleisurelylunchsamplingauthenticTuscancuisinebeforeheadingouttoseethemajorsitesof
thecitysuchasthePiazzaDellaSignoria,thePonteVecchio,theDuomo,andGiotto’sBelltower—justtonameafew.Thenext
day,despitetheunseasonabletorrentialrains,theysawPisalocallyguidedbyVeroniquewhoseknowledgeofhistoryandsym‐
bolismastoundedthetravelers.Intheafternoon,thetravelersreturnedtoFlorencetovisittheAccademiaviewingMichelan‐
gelo’sDavid,toclimbGiotto’sbelltowerforastunningviewofthecity,andtoexploretheauthenticartistssetupinthe
Duomo’ssquare.Afterdinner,theytookthefunicularuptoMontecatiniAltoforbeautifulnightvistas.
StillinTuscany,thegroupmadeitswaytoSanGimignano,amedievalhilltownthatboaststhebestgelatointheworld!The
grouphadachancetovisitthetopoftheancientfortressandtovisitthetorturemuseum.Afterwards,wetraveledpasthuge
LakeTrasimeneinUmbriaandontoAssisi.Theweatherwasalittleuncooperativeaswetouredthetown,butafterwesawthe
BasilicaofSt.Francis,wealsovisitedtheremainsoftheRomantempleofMinervaandtheoldRomanforumthatisstillvisible
fromthestreet.
ThegroupstayedinPerugia,homeoftheveryfamousBacichocolates.Thenextmorning,thetravelersheadsouthtoPompeii,
wheretheyatelunchatarestaurantnamedafterthelocalvolcano“IlVesuvio”.OurlocalguideTatzianaledthegroupintothe
ancienttheatreandpastthegladiators’barracksandintoatypicaldomus‐‐‐theHouseofMenanderwheremanyelegantfres‐
coeswerestillintact.Theyalsoenjoyedacameo‐makingdemonstration‐‐‐anancientlocalart.FollowingtheirstopinPompeii,
thegroupheadedthroughSorrentoanduptoMassaLubrensewheretheviewsoftheislandsincludingIschiaandCapriwere
visiblefromthesquare.
Earlythenextmorning,thetravelersboardedawaterferrytotheisleofCapri.Thegrouphadachancetotourthemajorgrotti
aroundtheislandandtoseetheFaraglioni(theSirens’rocks)whicharealandmarkofCapri.AfteratripupthefuniculartoCa‐
pritown,theygroupgotatouroftheGardensofAugustusandthelocalperfumefactorywhose lowersandfruitsusedtocreate
thescentswere irstcultivatedbythemonksontheisland.Afterwardsthegroupenjoyedoneofthebestmealsofthetripatthe
restaurantLaCisternainCapriTown,lovinglypreparedbyMrs.Sawan’slongtimefriendandrestaurateurFrancoTrama.
ThetravelersmadetheirwaytoNaplesviaferry.Afterabriefdrivingtourofthecity,thegroup
headednorthtoRome.Romewasafour‐daywhirlwind.ThestudentssawtheSistineChapel,St.
Peter’sBasilica,andtheVaticanMuseum.TheyalsohadalocalguidenamedPaololeadingthem
throughtheColosseumandtheoldRomanforum.LatertheyvisitedthePantheon,thePiazzaNavo‐
na,andtheTreviFountain.Their inaltwodaysweredesignedontheirown,takingintheCata‐
combsofSanCallistoplusawalkingtourofTrastevere—includingtwoofthemostbeautifulchurch‐

AftertwodaysinEngland,thegrouptookaferryacross
theEnglishChanneltoNorthernFrancetovisitthehis‐
toricbeachesofNormandy.ThestudentsvisitedOmaha
Beach,GoldBeach,TheAmericanCemetaryaswellas
PointeduHoc.Thisstopwasafavoriteamongallthe

Additionally,thegrouphadawonderfultourguide,Henri,fromBelgiumwhoguidedusthroughthebattle ields
ofBastogne,thesiteofthe inalstandoftheEuropeanTheaterandtheBattleoftheBulge.Thiswasallthemore
interestingashewastellingthegrouphisexperiencelivingthroughit.InBerlinthegroupwasabletovisitthe
TopographyofTerrorMuseum,builtonthegroundsoftheformerGestapoheadquarters,theBerlinWall,
BrandenburgGateandtheMemorialtoHolocaustVictims.
Overall,itwasagreatexperiencetoseethehistoricalsitesstudiesinWorldandAmericanHistory.SocialStud‐
ieswilltravelagainin2019.

TakingalittleleewaywithaquotefromDr.Seuss,“oh,theplacesthatyouwillgo”witheachworldlanguagethatyouknow,
thispastsummer,manyMedinaHighSchoolstudentshadtheopportunitytotraveloutsideoftheUnitedStatesinorderto
gainrealworldexperienceinthetargetcultureoftheirstudies.Onesuchtripwasthe12daySpanishFiestatourofSpain
takenbysevenMHSstudentsthatleftonJune11thandreturnedonJune22nd.TheSpanishFiestatravelersfromMHSinclud‐
edAbigailBreitenbucher,OliviaFerris,StephanieFlamik,RachelHawk,ClaireLeupp,AbbyStankard,andLiddyThies.The
SpanishFiestatripwaschaperonedbyMHSSpanishteacherandWorldLanguageDepartmentChairAlexandraMusselman.
AlsojoiningtheMedinaHighSchoolstudentswerehersons,CoreyMusselmanandSethMusselman.TheSpanishFiestatour
wasofferedthroughEFToursandtheMedinagroupwasaccompaniedbyseveralgroupsfromaroundthecountry,including
TexasandIllinois.
ThisexcitingtriptoSpainstartedwithourarrivalinBarcelona,cityofthe1992SummerOlympicsandhomeofworldre‐
nownedarchitect,AntonioGaudi.Wespenttwowonderfuldaysinthisenchantingcity.StudentsstrolledalongLasRamblas,
ascenicboulevard illedwithshops,cafesandanopen‐airmarketfeelthatconnectsoneofthecity’smainsquares,LaPlaza
deCataluña,withtheChristopherColumbusMonumentneartheshoreoftheMediterraneanSea.Wewereabletoexplore
LasRamblasduringourfreetimeduringourstayinBarcelonaandthisiswherewestoppedtohavelunch.Our irstnightin
SpainwastoppedoffbyattendingaFlamencoshowthatevening.ThenextdayinBarcelona,wevisitedelBarrioGótico,the
GothicneighborhoodandsawsomeamazingtreasuresdesignedbyAntonioGaudi,anarchitectthatwasaheadofhistimes.
WedidawalkingtouroutsideofLaSagradaFamily,aCatholiccathedral,touredhisamazingParqueGüellwherewemade
suretotakeapicturebyhisfamouslizardonthestaircase.Afterwards,withthe2016SummerOlympicsaroundthecorner,
itwasexcitingtoseetheOlympicVillageofthe1992SummerOlympicsinBarcelonaonMontjuı̈cHill.Thenwetooklearned
totravelbysubwayinordertoridethecablecarsuptoMontjuı̈cHillandexplorethenearbyruins,whichhadasurprising
“SafetyTown”tuckedawayforSpanishchildrentolearnaboutstreetsafety.Afteralongdayofwalkingtoseethesights,we
walkeddownthebeachtodipourtoesintheMediterraneanSeaandenjoyourdailydoseoficecream.
Thenextday,webeganourtrektowardssouthernSpain.Our irststopwasthecityofValencia,famousforitsorangesand
paella,asaffron lavoredricedishwithvegetables,seafoodandchicken.InValencia,thehighlightwasvisitingtheoutdoor
AquariumcomplexOceanogrà icattheCityofArtsandSciencesmuseum.Wearrivedjustintimetoseethedolphinshow.It
wassoexcitingtoseetheMHSstudentsdotheirbesttolistenandtounderstandthecommentatorsoftheshowwhichwere
speakinginSpanish.
AfterspendingtheeveninginValencia,thenextmorningwejourneyedtothebeautifulcityofGranada,thelastMoorish
strongholduntiltheCatholicmonarchs,IsabelandFerdinandcompletedtheReconquestofSpaininthenameoftheCatholic
religionaftera700+yearoccupationoftheMoorsfromAfrica.OurtourguidewasfromGranada,sothegroupenjoyeda
verypersonalizedtourofhercity.InGranada,wevisitedLaAlhambra(moorishstronghold)anditsgardens illedwithan
explosionofcolorful lowersandfountainsintheGenerlife.Afterthetour,ourstudentsbeganthe“CityChallenge”scavenger
huntwherethegrouphadtolocatekeylocationsbetweentheAlhambrafortressandthecitycenter.Duringthescavenger
hunt,thestudentswererequiredtoaskculturalquestionsofthecitizensofGranadathattheyencounteredandaskthemto
takeapictureofthegroupinfrontofthedesignatedsightaswellasnavigateamapthroughthecity.Thatevening,thegroup
decidedtoseeaFlamencoshowthattookplaceinthegypsyhomesbuiltascavesintothesideofthesurroundingmountains.
Itwasanintimatesettingwhenspectatorswereinvitedattheendoftheshowtogetupandtrytheirhandat lamencodanc‐
ingwiththe lamencodancers.
Thenextmorning,thegroupspentthedaytravellingtotheCostadelSolwherewestayedinthesmallresorttownofFuengi‐
rolawhichwasabouta10minutesbusridetothebeach.Studentsenjoyedarelaxingdayweretheytraveledtothebeachto
swimintheMediterraneanSea,eatingicecream,orderingfoodatlocalrestaurantsandinteractingwiththelocalpeople.
AfterrelaxinginFuengirola,wewereoffonthebustoSevilla.AlongthewaywesawsomeofthefamouswindmillsfromDon
QuijotedelaMancha.UponourarrivalinSevilla,wetookaquickcitytourbybus.WewalkedthroughtheBarriodeSanta
Cruzneighborhood,andvisitedthe3rdlargestcatholicchurchintheworld,lacatedraldeSevilla.Thestudentssaythetomb
holdingtheremainsofChristopherColumbusandthentheyclimbedtheGiraldatowerthattheyhavestudiedaboutinSpan‐
ish3withourDestinosvideoseries.FromtheGiraldatower,everyonehadquitethepanoramicviewofthecity.Alsoonthe
tour,thestudentssawtheTorredeOro,towerofgold,wheretherichesoftheNewWorldwere irstcatalogeduponarrivalto
SpainaswellasseeingtheoutsideofSevilla’sbullringPlazadeTorosandvisitingLaPlazadeEspaña,builtfortheWorld’s
Fairof1929.
Thenextmorning,thetourcontinuedontothelovelycityofCó rdobawherewesawLaMezquitawithitsinterestingmarble

pillarswiththeirredandwhitedoublearches.Studentsweregivenfreetimetohavelunchontheirownpriortocontinuingthebus
tripontowardsMadrid.ThehotelinMadridwaslocatedacrossfromAtochatrainstationandnotfarfromthePradomuseum.Stu‐
dentswalkeduptowntoeatatoneofthelocalrestaurants.ThegroupdecidedtovisitMadrid’sfamouscentralsquare,LaPlaza
Mayorinordertogetafeelforthiscosmopolitancityandtookanothersubwayride..Priortoheadingbacktothehotel,thestudents
enjoyedtapas,localappetizers.Latethisevening,at2:30amlocaltime,theMHSgroupsqueezedintoonehotelroominorderto
havetheCavsWatchPartyforthe inalgamefortheNationalChampionshipononeofthestudent’stinysmartphone.Aftersucha
longdayoftouring,mostwereasleepbyhalftime.Twonightowlsmadeituntilthelast10minutesofthegamebeforedriftingoff.
Mrs.Musselmanmanagedtokeephereyesopenforthewholegameandwasabletowakeeveryoneupat4:30amtowatchthelast
3minutes.ThekidsweresoexcitedtocheertheCavstovictory!Needlesstosay,thenextmorning,theearlywake‐upcallwasa
littleroughoneveryone.
StudentsvisitedthePradomuseumwheretheydidascavengerhuntto indvariousworksofart…severalofwhichwereonesthat
theSpanish3studentshavestudied.Next,theywereofftovisitLaReinaSo íamuseumthathousestheimmensemuralofGuernica
donebyPabloPicassothattheylearnedaboutwhilestudyingtheSpanishCivilWar.Intheafternoon,studentsvisitedElPalacio
Real,theroyalpalace.Unfortunately,theydidn’tmeetthenewkingandqueenofSpain…maybenexttime.
MedinachoseanextraexcursionwheretheyvisitedElValledelosCaídos,ValleyoftheFallen.Thisisamonumentbuiltbythedic‐
tatorFranciscoFrancoasamemorialtributetobothsidesoftheSpanishCivilWar.Fromhere,thegroupvisitedElEscorial,aroyal
monasterypalace.ItwasexcitingtoseemoreartworkbytheSpanishmastersthattheyhavestudiedaswellastoseetheburial
roomwherethekingsandqueensofSpainhavebeenburied.WealsovisitedthecityofSegoviaandsawtheRomanaqueductas
wellaselAlcazar,apalacethatmanybelievetheDisneycastlewasusedasamodel.Backatthehotel,thestudentshadalittlefree
timetowandernearthehotelpriortopackingtheirbagsfortheirreturntoMedinathenextday.
