CLUB NEWS LETTER 17th October 2013 Ahoy Club Sailor! A number of salty sailors mentioned counting more than sixty yachts on the water for the Twilight Race last night. Wow, that is outstanding...and equates to about 500 people at the club! Another couple of members said that they felt a really good gees in the club afterwards. That is also top drawer...and the burgers sold out in double quick time. What I experienced was a warm welcome from the Lufthansa Hostesses, a lekker evening on the water, and nice catch-up with a couple of mates in TC corner...but I was somewhat surprised that the bars emptied out quite quickly between 10-10:30pm. Have we all grown up and stopped being a drinking club with a sailing problem? It seems the tables have turned...maybe that is an awareness of drinking and driving, or maybe just the boppers wanting to catch the last few mincing moments of the Rihanna show? Or maybe the club could be looking for just a little bit more variety in the front of house offering? Anyway, I hope we all continue to enjoy the Lufthansa Twilight Series, and brace yourselves and your yachts for a lot of action in the upcoming four Saturdays: Round Robben Island Pursuit Race with Harken; RiskSA team regatta; One-Eighty Ladies Race; Yachtport Novamarine Overnight Race. You can already enter the super fun Crocs Summer Regatta 14-16 December, and...wait for it...the Mykonos Offshore Regatta Notice of Race will be posted on 1 November 2013, and entries will open on that date. Having become interested in sailing at a very early age, he joined the Royal Cape Yacht Club in 1944. He had to wait until he was 16 to become a junior member. He is still sailing as a very active crewmember aboard “Spilhaus”. That is an amazing sailing career of 73 years. His first crewing position was on “Viking”, a very beautiful Bermudan sloop designed by Knud Reimers and built in Sweden for the New York boat show. After that he bought his own yacht and has owned quite a number: “Caprice” – 39 foot Gaff Cutter “Windward” – 42 foot Gaff Cutter designed by N D Ross, built by Louw and Halvorsen in Cape Town “Active” – 50 foot Bermudan cutter built in Austalia “Cirrus” – RCOD “Fun”- RCOD “Assegai 1” – 1 tonner designed by Angelo Lavranos “Assegai 2” – 2 tonner Designed by Angelo Lavranos Jerrold contributed a lot to sailing. As Secretary of Sailing he introduced many very successful ocean races, which were sailed for a long time. Sadly this side of our sport at the Cape has died in recent years. He was a shareholder in Robertson and Caine Yachts which built so many of our yachts and was particularly responsible for developing the “Holiday 23” Jerrold is a member of the RORC and has competed in many of their events in the UK. He has been sailing on “Spilhaus” for the past ten years. “Spilhaus”, also built in Sweden and designed by Knud Reimers, is sailed a lot, usually twice a week, and always takes part in the Mykonos Regatta and the Spring regatta. We have won both of them a couple of times. Jerrold is very much part of this, in fact I have problems in keeping him off the foredeck. In the last month or two Jerold has missed a couple of days sailing as he has a health problem. We are hoping that he will overcome this soon. Teddy Kuttel, Cliffie Leih, Julien Pells, Dieter Koenen, Jennifer Webb. There definitely seems to be a guardian angel looking over this fleet. Saturday's weather was pretty nasty in the morning, but a very pleasant window opened up after lunchtime as the wind backed from west to southwest over the afternoon. There was a fair swell and a variable breeze with the upper limit in the mid-twenties. 14 yachts made it to the start... click here to continue reading the article.
