SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
During its colorful 150-year history, Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, the oldest company of
private investigators in the United States, pursued some of the nation’s most notorious criminals. Allan
Pinkerton founded the company in the 1850s. One of his first contracts was to provide protective services for
the Illinois Central Railroad, whose legal counsel was Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln became president in
1861, Pinkerton formed a secret service to protect the president and to provide intelligence for the Union
Army. After the Civil War, Pinkerton’s sons, Robert and William, expanded the company. By the early
twentieth century, the Pinkertons had several thousand employees and as many clients and operated offices
throughout the United States. Robert Pinkerton died in 1907, and William ran the company alone until his
own death in 1923. Robert’s son Allan oversaw operations until his death in 1930, at which point Robert A.
Pinkerton II, great-grandson of the founder, led the company through the 1960s.
Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, Part B: Criminal Case File, Series 2: “D”–”J” is organized
alphabetically by the name of the case or criminal. Series 2 consists of cases primarily dating from the 1900s
to 1930s, but there are documents from 1869 through to 1961. The most famous case in Series 2 concerns
the James-Younger gang, exploring the criminal careers and family lives of Jesse and Frank James, and their
partners in crime Thomas Coleman “Cole,” James, John, and Robert Younger. Other case files in this series
cover gangs led by Edward Guerin, the Dalton brothers, and Farrington brothers. Series 2 includes files on
crimes committed across the country including Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey,
New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, as well as international crimes in Canada,
England, and France. Members of the Pinkerton family are the primary correspondents in the collection, but
it was impossible to consistently identify the subjects because the sons’ names were never modified by II or
Jr. Other frequent correspondents include agency officials George D. Bangs, Herbert S. Mosher, J. K.
Sanderfur, and David C. Thornhill, as well as occasional letters from criminals and informants. (Most
informants use aliases ending in -stone, while Pinkerton operatives use aliases ending in –wood.)
Series 2 of the Criminal Case File of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency offers a wide variety of
cases on issues pertaining to race and ethnicity, as well as more typical criminal cases like murders, bank
robberies, fraud, and forgeries.
On the topic of race and ethnicity, one of the curious cases in Series 2 is that of William Dolan. In
1942 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, an unidentified individual entered Our Lady of Victories Convent in the
middle of the night and clipped strands of hair from two little girls asleep in the dormitory. Shortly after this
intrusion, there were four other home intrusions in the vicinity of the convent. In the home of Terrell
Heidelberg, son of the local judge, Heidelberg and his wife were assaulted by the intruder. In the files on this
case, in which the Pinkerton’s were called in to help with the investigation, several of the initial suspects were
African American men. Heidelberg’s house was located near a predominantly African American section of
town. Suspicion first centered on a man named Henry O. Gates, who had been fined by Judge Heidelberg for
fighting with a white man. Gates was rumored to have said after his sentencing that he would “get even with
them white folks.”
Another early suspect was Sam Seaton Jr., who had been rejected by the U.S. Army. According to
documents in the collection, the army rejected him because they felt he was “mentally deranged” and “apt to
commit … vicious attacks.” The other piece of circumstantial evidence against Seaton was that he lived near
v
the Heidelberg home and that he wore the type of shoe for which a footprint had been found close to the
scene of the crime. Despite initial suspicions focusing on these two African American men, Pinkerton
detectives cast their net wide and did not let racial biases interfere with their investigation. After receiving a
tip from a railroad detective for the L & N Railroad, the detectives focused their investigation on William
Dolan, a 57-year-old native of New York. The Pinkertons discovered that Dolan had served time in jail for
rum-running and had been arrested in June 1933 for intimidating government witnesses. They also found out
that Dolan had moved frequently among several different southern cities, and he was known to travel with
barber scissors. Pinkerton agents quickly gathered evidence implicating Dolan, and he was charged with
assault with intent to murder in August 1942. At this point in the case, however, the reports from the
Pinkerton agents end and it is not clear from the collection how exactly this case ended.
Other cases in Series 2 that confront the issue of race and ethnicity are the defrauding of the El Paso
Smelting Works, the murder of David Hennessy in New Orleans, and the murder of Seely Houk in
Pennsylvania. The El Paso Smelting Works case has many interesting angles. It involved the defrauding of the
company by its employees, most of whom were Mexicans. The employees of the works were adding salt to
the ore that they were processing. They then took the ore that they had removed and sold it on their own.
The documents indicate that, in addition to the profit motive, the defrauding was in part a labor protest for
the difficult working conditions at the smelting works. This case also indicates some of the frustrations that
were part of the job for Pinkerton agents. Despite tracking potential suspects for more than six months, the
files show that the Pinkerton’s were never able to collect very much evidence that implicated the suspects.
A very different case involving ethnicity was the murder of David Hennessy, the New Orleans police
chief, who was murdered by members of the mafia in October 1890. The roots of the Hennessy murder lay in
a contest between two groups for control of the work of unloading ships on the New Orleans docks. Reports
in the collection show that this work was originally dominated by a man named Provenzano. A man named
Matranga, however, seeing the profits that could be made, tried to establish a rival organization on the docks.
In July 1890, while Provenzano’s men were on their way to work, a group of men attacked them with
shotguns as they passed through an alley near the docks. Two men were killed and several wounded. After
this incident, Police Chief Hennessy vowed that he would arrest everyone involved. In October 1890,
Hennessy was killed while on his way home from work. A short time after, New Orleans police arrested
nineteen men in connection with Hennessy’s murder.
In the first decade of 1900, Pennsylvania had appointed officers to the Pennsylvania Game
Commission to enforce its recently enacted hunting laws. A man by the name of Seely Houk was in charge of
enforcing the new game laws in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. In April 1906, Houk’s body was found
floating in the Mahoning River. The Pennsylvania Game Commission hired Pinkerton’s National Detective
Agency to investigate. Pinkerton agents quickly infiltrated an organization that they identified as being linked
to the mafia in Italy. The files on the Seely Houk murder include reports from Pinkerton agents pertaining to
their investigation of the quarry workers and other Italians living in and around Hillsville, Pennsylvania.
Beyond these cases involving race and ethnicity, Series 2 includes several spectacular bank robbery
cases. Reading like the inspiration for a Hollywood movie are the documents on the robbery of a U.S. mail
truck in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In October 1926, a U.S. mail truck, after leaving the Union County Trust
Company in Elizabeth, found its progress blocked by a Packard automobile parked in the middle of the road.
Two men in the Packard, and a third man, opened fire on the mail truck with machine guns. When the driver
and accompanying police officer fled from the truck, the robbers took control of the truck and drove off. In
their haste to leave the scene, however, the robbers had left their machine guns behind. Pinkerton’s National
Detective Agency immediately got involved in the case. Reports in the collection show that, over the next
three and a half years, the Pinkerton’s ranged from New York City to Detroit, to Baltimore, in pursuit of
eight suspects in this case. Other interesting bank robberies in this series include the robbery of the First
National Bank in Pearl River, New York, in 1921; First National Bank in Milltown, New Jersey, in 1920; and
robberies committed by John Dillinger in the 1930s.
vi
The largest single file in Series 2 covers the bank and train robberies committed in the 1870s and
early 1880s by the James-Younger gang, led by the notorious outlaws, Jesse and Frank James. The documents
on the James-Younger gang include background information on Jesse and Frank James, the four Younger
brothers and other outlaws who were affiliated with the James-Younger gang. One notable document in this
section of the collection is Bob Ford’s account of how he killed Jesse James in 1882, which begins on Frame
0105 of Reel 15.
Other cases in Series 2 include an insurance fraud case, a case on the theft and recovery of a painting
of the Duchess of Devonshire, files on the counterfeiting gang led by George Engells, and files on several
criminals who specialized in forgeries, most notably the gang led by Edward Guerin. Finally, Series 2 includes
a small file on the crimes committed by one-time Pinkerton agent Thomas Horn.
Series 2 of the Criminal Case File of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency contains files on thirtysix different cases arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the case or criminal. The Criminal Case File
of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency is a rich resource for researchers studying the history of law
enforcement, ethnicity and immigration issues, business practices of the first company of private
investigators, and a wide variety of interesting criminal cases. Scholars may be interested in other collections

The following index is a guide to the major topics in this microform publication. The first number
after each entry refers to the reel, while the four-digit number following the colon refers to the frame number
at which the file containing information on the subject begins. Hence, 4: 0599 directs researchers to Frame
0599 of Reel 4. By referring to the Reel Index, which constitutes the initial segment of this guide, the
researcher will find topics listed in the order in which they appear on the film.

O
ne of the curious cases in Series 2 is that of William Dolan. In 1942 in
Pascagoula, Mississippi, an unidentified individual entered Our Lady of
Victories Convent in the middle of the night and clipped strands of hair from
two little girls asleep in the dormitory. Shortly after this intrusion, there were
four other home intrusions in the vicinity of the convent. In the home of Terrell Heidelberg,
son of the local judge, Heidelberg and his wife were assaulted by the intruder. In the files on
this case, in which the Pinkerton’s were called in to help with the investigation, several of the
initial suspects were African American men. Heidelberg’s house was located near a
predominantly African American section of town. Suspicion first centered on a man named
Henry O. Gates, who had been fined by Judge Heidelberg for fighting with a white man.
Gates was rumored to have said after his sentencing that he would “get even with them
white folks.”
Another early suspect was Sam Seaton Jr., who had been rejected by the U.S. Army.
According to documents in the collection, the Army rejected him because they felt he was
“mentally deranged” and “apt to commit… vicious attacks.” The other piece of
circumstantial evidence against Seaton was that he lived near the Heidelberg home and that
he wore the type of shoe for which a footprint had been found close to the scene of the
crime. Despite initial suspicions focusing on these two African American men, Pinkerton
detectives cast their net wide and did not let racial biases interfere with their investigation.
After receiving a tip from a railroad detective for the L & N Railroad, the detectives focused
their investigation on William Dolan, a 57-year-old native of New York. The Pinkertons
discovered that Dolan had served time in jail for rum-running and had been arrested in June
1933 for intimidating government witnesses. They also found out that Dolan had moved
frequently among several different southern cities and he was known to travel with barber
scissors. Pinkerton agents quickly gathered evidence implicating Dolan, and he was charged
with assault with intent to murder in August 1942.
During its colorful 150-year history, Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, the
oldest company of private investigators in the United States, pursued some of the nation’s
most notorious criminals including Jesse James, Alfred Brady, John Dillinger, and countless
others. Allan Pinkerton founded the company in the 1850s. One of his first contracts was to
provide protective services for the Illinois Central Railroad, whose legal counsel was
Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln became president in 1861, Pinkerton formed a secret
service to protect the president and to provide intelligence for the Union Army. After the
Civil War, Pinkerton’s sons, Robert and William, expanded the company. By the early
twentieth century, the Pinkertons had several thousand employees and as many clients and
operated offices throughout the United States.
Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, Part B: Criminal Case File, Series 2: “D”–“J” is a rich
resource for researchers studying the history of law enforcement, ethnicity and immigration issues,
business practices of the first company of private investigators, and a wide variety of interesting
criminal cases.
