Worshipful Master - From the EAST
Thomas Quiroz
I can’t believe that another year has passed!
Yes Brethren, I will start my article just like all past Masters of this Lodge have
done who have gone this way before, and once again it’s time to install a new
corps of officers, and they all worked so hard these last several months to
qualify for their advancement. I offer my sincere congratulations to each and
everyone of them for their achievement, and wish them all a successful term.
It has been a pleasure serving you as Master of this Lodge, I’m very proud to
have Honored our past Master Worshipful Al Moen as AGL and privileged to
have presented The Hiram Award to past Master Worshipful Tom Oldham and
who can forget The Golden Veteran 50 year pin presented to P.M. Worshipful
Arthur Beddoe, Congratulations to you all.
I would like to thank all the past Masters and brethren who have supported
me through my journey to the oriental chair, and as I step down and pass the
gavel to Master elect Brother James Laage, I hope and pray that he receive
all the Love and support as I have received during my year.
To all my officers words cannot express the gratitude I have for you, especially
our Tiler Worshipful Lee Broussard, thank you for preparing the Lodge at every
Degree and our stated meetings, I Love you my brother, and to Brother George
Ison thanks for being there for us behind the scene as our editor of the Trestle
Board. Finally thank you to my wife Carol (Baby Love) for taking the time and
having the patience of traveling with me to Grand Lodge and all the Masters
and Wardens retreats, and let us not forget the Ladies events at our Stated
meetings, great job.

Brethren, Ladies and Friends,
The 1st., is New Year’s Day, the Rose Parade, however, is on the
2nd., as the parade is not held on a Sunday.
The 6th., celebrates the birth of Martin Luther King Jr.
The 13th., besides being Friday, is the day Carmen and I will
need lots of help in setting things up. We are figuring on a 12:30
PM start time, and with any luck she and I will be out of there by
full dark. All of this in preparation for the 14th , which is Burbank
#406’s 108 th Installation of Officers, which begins at 3:00 PM,
with dinner following at 5:00, or thereabouts. Please RSVP with
Norm (818-406- 9177), so we have a fairly accurate count so
enough food will be available for all to enjoy.
The 20 th will be the U.S. Presidential Inauguration. I wonder
what that speech will be like?
The 28 th is the Chinese New Year, the year of the Rooster, and
those born this year are said to be Fire Roosters.

Brethren,
Among the Craft Masons of olden time the actual work of building was done by Fellowcrafts, using materials gathered and rough
hewn by Apprentices, all working under the guidance of the Master
In our Symbolism, as the Apprentice is youth, so the Fellowcraft is
manhood, the time when the actual work of life must be done on
the Level, by the Plumb and Square. Next to the Square and Compasses, the Level and Plumb are among the noblest and simplest
symbols of the Craft, and their meaning is so plain that it hardly
needs to be pointed out. Yet they are so important, in use and
meaning, that they might almost be numbered among the Lesser
Lights of the Lodge.
The Level, so the newly made Mason is taught, is for the purpose of
proving horizontals. An English writer finds a lesson in the structure
of the Level, in the fact that we know that its surface is level when
the fluid is poised and at rest. From this use of the Level he bids us
seek to attain a peaceful, balanced poise of mind, undisturbed by
the passions which upset and sway us one way or the other. It is a
council of perfection, he admits, but he insists that one of the best
services of Masonry is to keep before us high ideals and, what is
more, a constantly receding ideal, otherwise we should tire of it.
