Promptly at one o’clock the fifteen designers began the first category, that of the Interpretive Design. Their props were from basic containers, to rustic gridworks, to hand-made and hand-painted props, and classic floral containers. A well thought out selection of flowers was provided to each competitor to create the designs for all categories with a time limit for each. Scott Hasty AIFD from Orange, Texas greeted the audience of friends, family and those shopping at the Dallas Market who were in attendance. We are so grateful that Scott was available to share his incredible talent. It was interesting to learn that he has been involved in every part of this competition as a contestant, a former Texas Cup Winner, a former chair of the event and as a judge. These experiences certainly came through in his well-spoken words throughout the day. Barabasi ION IS AT TH AT E N I AT I Imagination Innovation, the 2017 Texas Designer of the Year Competition, took stage on January 21st at the Dallas Market Center. As one of the largest attended markets that includes an international focus, this world-class setting was the backdrop for the Texas Designer of the Year Competition. The theme for the 2017 competition was derived from the quote “Imagination is at the Heart of all Innovation.” 2016 Texas Designer of the Year Alan Masters AIFD chaired the competition. “IM AG Written by Rebecca Northen TSFA Past President Susan Weatherford (center), and President Norman Northen TMFA greet Taylor Pritchett at Dallas Market Center People’s Choice AwardWinner Taylor Pritchett The second design of the day was a holiday design that captured the overall theme of the competition with influences from the 2017 Dallas Market Center Inspiration Board. The Inspiration Board was provided as a point of inspiration for this category. Following a much needed break, the third design category was introduced. This part of the program was the Surprise Situation Category. The four-part design approach was to include a portrait bouquet, a mother’s corsage, a boutonniere and one dozen roses for the groom to present to the millennial bride. A winter theme was suggested with Imagination and Innovation. The behind the scenes work of many continued throughout the afternoon directed by the time keeper and monitors, evaluated by the judges, and completed by those who tallied in time for the winners to be announced live on Facebook at a Cocktail Reception sponsored by the Dallas Market Center. Third place was awarded to Vanessa Budd from Houston, receiving a congratulatory ribbon and two hundred dollars. The award for Second place went to Coby Neal AIFD from Austin receiving a congratulatory ribbon and three hundred dollars. The announcement of the 2017 Texas Designer of the Year, Debbie Lyon from Houston concluded the day! Debbie received the First place ribbon, the Texas Designer of the Year Silver Cup, five hundred dollars, a six hundred dollar scholarship for expenses to compete in the National Designer of the Year Competition affiliated with the National Alliance of Floral Associations (NAFA) in Chicago in October. Debbie was also recognized as a Star of Texas and presented a Crystal Star. Congratulations Debbie, Coby, and Vanessa and to all who participated in this competition! The People’s Choice Award was added in 2016 to the competition format to support the Texas Floral Endowment Endowed Fund in memory of TSFA Past President Sheri White. The People’s Choice Award was awarded to Taylor Pritchett from Colleyville. His ability to adapt to change is remarkable. I stood in awe when the product arrived. The donors were so generous, sending additional product that they hoped would be featured. Scott’s determination to educate using each and every stem was truly something to behold. You should just see what he can design with 60 stems of Papyrus foliage and then turn around and see the remaining stems being used to create the base for a rose topiary. Nothing goes unused when Scott Hasty creates. Texas State Florists’ Association held the annual Texas Designer of the Year Competition on January 21st in Dallas, at the Dallas Market Center. In coordination with the Competition, the Dallas Market extended an invitation to J. Scott Hasty to present a collection of Holiday inspired arrangements at the World Trade Center Hall of Nations. It is difficult to know where to begin when I think of explaining my experience assisting Scott Hasty. The man is so genuinely talented. His knowledge of mechanics, techniques, 6 | TEXAS in Bloom | March 2017 There are times that I am intimidated to ask questions of highly creative people. He actually got excited and said that I had a GREAT question. We had an oversized container that we filled with Papyrus. Around the lip of the container we had limited amounts of Ginger to complete the design however the ginger needed to be placed around the entire container. Scott so cleverly shared, “what you need to do is divide the product into 4 parts. Start by placing the stems in a North, South, East, West fashion. And Voila ... your limited product is spaced evenly. I discovered that there is never a question that shouldn’t be asked. It is amazing what can be discovered!!! He went on to share that when stems remain and you are creating a topiary base, start in the center of the container and build it from there! Talk about efficient use of time and product! A TEXAS SIZED THANK YOU to all who contributed to the success of J.Scott Hasty’s presentation A Fresh Look : Holiday 2017. The following companies provided product. A special thank you to longtime TSFA member Jim Parks, owner of JB ParksWholesale Florist. In addition to contributing product, JB Parks Wholesale Florist received and covered the freight expense of the floral product sent to Dallas from most of these companies. Susan Piland TMF and I assisted with the creation of sixteen designs which Scott presented, demonstrated techniques and shared a great deal of information. He also created two additional arrangements during the presentation showing simple ways to incorporate evergreen pine boughs and evergreen wreaths into every day arrangements. The use of materials in such simple yet unusual ways add value and style to arrangements. Texas Floral Product Partners Gold Level Texas Floral Education Underwriter Rio Roses* Vertical structures are Scott’s calling card. We see this in the Birch design with creatively placed rose filled ornaments. However, not all the arrangements Scott creates are complicated structures. He showed a range of creative designs from the very complicated to simply genius. Starting with a 6 inch heavy glass cylinder vase, he added glitter snow about a quarter inch deep then placing a 5”red plastic ornament. He popped off the top of the ornament drilling a larger hole where he filled the ornament with water placing it inside the container. Delicate pine and a red rose were added with a touch of reindeer moss to professionally complete where the hole was drilled. We also discovered the whimsical side of Scott Hasty with his Grinch arrangement. With stems of cedar and decorative wire he wrapped and wrapped! As the binding strengthened the cedar it began to take shape and he was able to curve the bound cedar to stay in place. He then placed the stem in wet foam and based the arrangement with Roses. His pièce de résistance was to attach a single oversized red ornament to the tip of the cedar! You can actually see the holiday classic in this design! Spending time with Scott Hasty and hands on experiencing his creative concepts is inspirational. I plan to place all I learned in my December 2017 Holiday Design Plans! This Main Stage Design Presentation and Business Session are underwritten by Silver Level Founding Texas Floral Education Underwriter Photographer | Pezz Photo The Tampa Museum of Art provided the backdrop for an evening of elegance surrounded by the beauty of the season. The varying tones of linens, all in fall hues, set the stage with the gold chivari chairs complementing the selection of pedestaled container. The opportunity, provided by the pedestal to create drama with height of the design, is expanded through the mechanics used offering what is needed to add width and fullness to the overall floral presentation. A tray of floral foam covered in chicken wire is placed on top of the elevation to offer what is needed to expand the visual space. Image Featured on Cover: The ceremony setting was featured on the lower lawn of an exquisite horse farm on 35 acres. The lawn was accessed by a gorgeous granite stair case leading to the setting. The benches were custom made in New York City and later donated to the zoo that is named for her family. The benches were Red of course! With the inclusion of the white hydrangea, the key component is the use of the transition of color. Adding white hydrangea to the rich color palette would not have worked without the progression from pale peach, into orange, into burgundy. The addition of the feathers, bittersweet and amaranthus, provided the texture and varieties needed to achieve the desired fall inspired design. The arbor metal structure was ladened in the beauty of florals and foliage. Using four cases of southern smilax on the frame floral cages were zip tied in specific places to hold the floral content. Once these were in place the structure was flowered. Ivy and Jasmine strands were then placed to increase the depth of the overall design. Color is oftentimes the most important element of the concept for a wedding or celebrated event. One knows this to be true when a client requests a custom color for the chivari chairs placed at each table! The Bride was all about red down to the last detail…and so Red it would be!!! The layering of the petals grounded the color statement and was so thick that there was no way to anchor this particular placement. The weight simply had to do the job! Oftentimes in a windy situation when less petals are available we will use a piece of burlap, cut to the needed size, and spray with Tack 2000 placing several layers one to the next. We then attach the burlap to ground with wooden picks. The wedding was a second marriage for both celebrated with a seated dinner on one of the lawns of the estate. The bride preferred not a single centerpiece thus the composite style graced each table. The selection of round forms placed on square dining tables offered interest and elegance to the overall setting. The impact of color was magnificent as seen centered on each table in the careful selection of blossoms. Photographer | Pezz Photo Photographer | Ryan Joseph Photographs The centerpiece of this event was a root system that a client was literally digging up and provided. We suspended it by securing with rope from the ceiling of the tent. The intrigue of the root system itself was the creative foundation of the design. Once secured we simply attached southern smilax and lanterns that played off the texture of the vines. Clusters of fruit adorned the tables leaving needed space as the dinner was being served family style. Potted herbs highlighted other areas throughout the event. With this play of organic textures throughout the event, the setting found it’s home in the overall space. When designing for a client’s home this is quite important for all to feel as if it belongs.
