Chalk-tique® Kit Directions “How-to” Video available at www.chalktique.com IMPORTANT: Please read through completely before starting your project! The Chalk-tique® Additive, once mixed with water, turns any water based paint - latex, enamel, flat, semi-gloss, or gloss; into a more versatile, durable chalk-style paint that can be easily distressed to achieve an antique look. Chalk-tique® adheres best to clean, dry surfaces. If painting in a high use area such as a kitchen, you can slightly increase the ratio of Chalk-tique® additive to paint in order to enhance durability, and/or paint two coats. 1 If your finish is flaky or pealing, use the finer grit sandpaper to remove any loose pieces. Although the majority of finishes do not require any sanding, some high gloss surfaces will have better paint adhesion if the surface is scuffed up just a little with the fine grit sandpaper (always sand in the direction of the wood grain). 2 Mix 1 teaspoon concentrated powdered soap (included) with 6 cups warm water until the powder has dissolved (appearance will be cloudy). Wash the entire surface of your project and let dry. 3 Using the measuring scoop included and the chart below, measure the corresponding amount of Chalk-tique® Additive and put into your empty kit gallon can. Add the ratio of water and stir together with the stir stick provided until smooth (add more water if needed until creamy consistency). (Chalk-tique® is non-toxic, but can be irritating to the eyes. If irritation occurs, simply rinse eyes with water.) NOTE: Although the Chalk-tique® additive will appear brown in its mixed state, it will not change the color of your paint. 4 Again using the chart below, measure the corresponding amount of paint and pour into the paint can. Mix the Chalktique® and paint well with the stir stick. Congratulations, you now have Chalk-tique® paint! The Chalk-tique® Additive will remain mixed with your paint and will not separate. Chalk-tique® Additive: Water: Paint: Mix 2 scoops (1/2 cup) 1/4 cup then add to 1/2 quart paint Mix 4 scoops (1 cup) 1/2 cup then add to 1 quart paint Mix entire bag (4 cups) 2 cups then add to 1 gallon paint 5 You are now ready to paint. We have provided a paint brush for your convenience! While a single coat should suffice, depending on the finished look you desire, you may want to “touch-up” or add another coat. We recommend adding a second coat to high-contact surface areas such as kitchen cabinets and drawers. Allow all painted surfaces to dry before moving on to the next step. 6 Next, distress your piece using the sandpaper provided. Use coarser grit for a heavily distressed finish or the fine grit for a lighter distressed finish. To ensure your piece looks naturally worn, sand corners and edges first. IMPORTANT: Always sand with the wood grain! If you feel you have distressed too much, simply touch up with more Chalk-tique®paint. 7 After you have finished distressing your piece, remove all dust and debris using the cheesecloth provided. 8 To preserve and protect your newly distressed finish, apply Howard’s Premium Paste Wax included in your Kit, using one of the polishing cloths provided. Apply the paste wax in a circular motion and let sit for 3 to 5 minutes, then buff off with the other polishing cloth. For added protection, apply another coat of paste wax.
