Issue 3 | Volume 2 | June 2011 Economic Development Cowichan EPIC Sustainable Living Expo Success for Local Companies Economic Development Cowichan attended the EPIC Sustainable Living Expo in Vancouver from May 13-15 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Ten Cowichan companies participated in the show to highlight their sustainable products. Local companies included: Cleaner Planet Soapnuts; Pacific Homes; Shea Butter Market; Soul Comfort Sheepskin; Untamed Feast; Dad’s Westcoast Wildfire Awesome Sauce; Hot Chick Spice Company; Teafarm; Surefloat and Spiritwood Natural Options. The show attracted over 16,000 attendees who were looking to purchase sustainable and green products and services. The Cowichan companies found the show valuable in terms of selling their products, gaining new customers and making connections with wholesalers who were looking to carry green products. According to Wendy Ewing, owner of Spiritwood Natural Options, “EPIC was a great experience as people gave me valuable feedback regarding products they felt were most important for them. I also was honored to be part of a show that promoted environmental sustainability, sensitivity, and responsibility.” Dana Zaruba, owner of Hot Chick Spice Company also found the show to be beneficial. “It was nice to be able to share my gourmet food line and new book with a savvy and well-informed clientele at this year's Epic show. Ten local Cowichan businesses recently went through the program including: 49th Parallel Grocery Limited; Cowichan Green Community; Hilary’s Cheese Company; Island Documents Storage and Shredding Inc; Island Savings Credit Union; Madrone Environmental Services; Organic Fair; The Super Plumber; True Grain Bread; and Warm Valley Contracting. Each company learned how to develop GHG inventories and create reduction strategies to reduce greenhouse gases. The program provided three half-day training sessions, 12 months of access to the online GHG management tool, up to four hours of technical assistance and an expert review of each particpanats GHG inventory. The participants are in the process of completing their inventories and reduction strategies. For more information on the Climate Smart program, check out their web site at www.climatesmartbusiness.com Rocky Creek Winery Wins Awards Congratulations to Rocky Creek Winery who won a total of four silver medals at the Northwest Wine Summit in Oregon and the All Canadian Wine Championships in Ontario. The medals were for the Ortega 2010, Pinot Gris 2010, Pinot Noir 2009 and Wild Blackberry 2010. The Northwest Wine Summit is the biggest wine competition specifically focused on wines from the Pacific Northwest and includes entries from Oregon, Washington State, Montana, Idaho, British Columbia, Alberta and Alaska.
