In Memory Of Helen Stevenson Lawrence “Dan” Carr Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends "He spoke well who said that graves are the footprints of angels.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow April 2015 Message from the Exective Director News and Notes Welcome Spring After such a long and cold winter I am so happy to say Spring is here and the flowers will start to bloom shortly. February was the coldest month ever recorded at the Region of Waterloo Airport. Spring has always been my favorite time of the year. I love to garden and tend to my yard, before I know it it will be time to cut the grass and get the patio furniture out. I can hardly wait, the smell of fresh cut grass is awesome. The month of April also brings us Easter. Deborah Beckman DOC, held her homemade chocolate sale on Saturday March 28th, it was a huge success. Thank you to all who purchased tickets for the Easter Basket. The funds raised will go directly to the Resident Council fund in hopes to purchase something for all residents to enjoy. Thank you Deborah for all of your efforts to make this possible. The new shingled roof was installed by Belmar Roofing on March 24th, we were all surprised to have it done in a day. Now that the roofers have completed their work, we will have our Landscape Team from Duench Landscaping here to clean up the exterior grounds and prepare our gardens for the coming growing season. There are many other renovation projects in the works, the shower rooms on North and Upper East have had work done in them. Over the next several months we will see on going improvement projects. I am very happy to announce that peopleCare has again been named one of Canada's Best 50 Managed companies. Further information will be distributed in a separate press release. Bed Safety Program peopleCare is doing an update on bed safety. Experience and research has convinced us that the risks related to the use of bedrails in long term care setting far outweigh the benefits. We have had homes that have experienced these risks first hand. It is now out responsibility to ensure resident safety by eliminating side rail usage in our homes. Each home over the next 6 months will complete individualized assessments from the multidisciplinary team including nursing, physiotherapy and other team members as appropriate. We are communicating the outcome of individual assessments to residents and Substitute decision makers prior to any changes to the plan of care. As The Director of Clinical Services I have requested to be invited to each homes Resident and Family council meetings to provide information. A Brochure which includes statistics, information on risks and benefits as well as alternatives will be made available to everyone. If you have any questions regarding the initiative please contact peoplecare’s Director of Clinical Services, Andrea Brissette RPN [email protected] Have a terrific April! Steve Pawelko Executive Director April 2015 We would like to share a few of the updates that have been recently added to Golden Years…. We’re looking for more volunteers to join our team. Do you enjoy playing cards or have a musical talent? We would always appreciate a helping hand from a volunteer, perhaps friendly visiting, spending time with residents on the computer or helping with seasonal events. We welcome those who can make a weekly commitment or just once a month. Training and support will be provided. Please contact Jason Fisher – Director of Programs for more information at [email protected] or 519-653-5493 ext. 125 The 2nd East and North wing tub rooms have had some renovations New roof installed on the original section of the home Pets Pets are welcome at Golden Years Nursing Home. For many residents it is therapeutic to see their favourite pet. Prior to entering the building, animals must have been vaccinated against rabies (at least 1 month prior); examined by a veterinarian and found to be free of fleas, hookworm, etc and generally healthy. It is also important that they are obedient, good tempered, house trained and leashed at all times when in the home. th th April 12 – April 18 is Volunteer Appreciation Week You will find as you look back upon your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others. Source Unknown Please take a moment to thank a Volunteer! ***************************************************************************** Golden Years Family Council is open to all family members and people of importance to a resident of Golden Years Home.
