1 Hardness: a measure of how easily a mineral can be
scratched.
Friedrich Mohs: German scientist who developed the
Mohs Hardness Scale.

2 3  Color: Is used to identify certain minerals (sulfur:
bright yellow) but does not always help with other
minerals.
4 Streak: color of a mineral’s powder left when
scratched across an unglazed, porcelain tile.
-Test this out on the streak plate
5 Cleavage: when minerals break along smooth, flat
surfaces.
6 7 8 Fracture: when minerals break with rough, jagged
edges.
9 Use the graduated cylinder and the balance to find the density of the two mineral samples. D=M/V remember… Quartz Density= Fluorite Density= 10 11 12
